I_Eki_I finished #1 in the NHL GWC European Regional Finals and took home the $5,000 and a ticket to the Finals in Vegas (twitch.tv/NHL) Hey NHLGamers, It's been an exciting weekend, as I was able to experience the European regional finals of the 2018 NHL Gaming World Championship on location at the Viasat studios in Stockholm. I'd like to start by thanking @Kane for making me his +1 and thus granting me access to the event - much appreciated! As we mentioned in an earlier news story, all of the eight players that made it to the European finals are a part of our NHLGamer community and it was really nice to get to meet everyone. The eight players made their way into the European finals through the four qualification tournaments: @Hansulinho (Xbox Live: Hansulinho) - EU XBOX #1 bracket winner @plee999 (Xbox Live: PleeMaker) - EU XBOX #1 bracket runner-up @Erkki (PSN: I_Eki_I) - EU PS4 #1 bracket winner @FlyerKungen (PSN: FlyerKungen) - EU PS4 #1 bracket runner-up @Kane (Xbox Live: Kaneyh) - EU XBOX #2 bracket winner @Nieppii (Xbox Live: Nieppi) - EU XBOX #2 bracket runner-up @Darkic01 (PSN: Darkic01) - EU PS4 #2 bracket winner @Artuzio (PSN: Artuzio) - EU PS4 #2 bracket runner-up The European finals were played using double elimination rules, meaning that losing one time puts you in the lower bracket and two losses means you're out. If you were to reach the final without any loses, that would put you one win away from winning the regional finals and $5,000, whereas reaching the finals through the lower bracket would require you to win two games in a row in the final round. The stakes for the games played on Sunday were high, and come June 19th, there's a lot of money on the line! (twitch.tv/NHL) The EU Finalists arrived in Stockholm on Saturday morning and for some players, such as PleeMaker, that meant getting up at 3 AM, as he had to fly out to Helsinki first. The day was spent at the Viasat studios, where the players got accustomed to the environment, were interviewed by the broadcast team, got photos taken etc. The day ended at around 8 PM and the players tried to get enough sleep for what would certainly be one of their biggest days in their NHL gaming careers. On Sunday morning it was off to the studio around 6:30 AM and after some breakfast, warmups and photoshoots it was time to play. The games were played in two rooms: The main stage and upstairs on a smaller stage. The best place to watch the games were outside the main stage room in the couch area and that's where most players and guests would spend their time between games. There were also some friendly games played in the warmup area. I made a small travel/behind the scenes video from the trip and it also features interviews of the two winners this weekend, be sure to check it out and give it a thumbs up if you enjoy it. At the end of the day, two players came out on top and met each other in the EU Regional Finals. I_Eki_I won the very first game of the day against Artuzio 7-2 and would only need one win to come out on top. The final game between these two was not at all as lopsided as the first game of the day, but I_Eki_I managed to keep his edge, taking home the $5,000 by a score of 2-1. The two players to make it into the World Finals: I_Eki_I and Artuzio, being interviewed by Andrea Helfrich (twitch.tv/NHL) Overall, it was really nice to be able to be on set for such an amazing event and I hope the broadcasts catch as big of an audience as possible and we'll see more of this (and hopefully 6vs6) in the future. A big thank you to all of the players and their friends and family members that I met during the weekend. It was also nice to get to meet the broadcast team of Andrew Telfer (TheNasher61), Arda Öcal, Frankie Ward and Andrea Helfrich, who all did an amazing job to bring the games alive. Not only are they professionals and good at what they do - they're also very friendly and approachable. The results of European Finals (twitch.tv/NHL) So there you have it. All of these eight gamers put on a great show and we should applaud them all for making it as far as they did. After this weekend, there could only be two remaining and NHLGamer would like to congratulate this weekends winner I_Eki_I and runner-up Artuzio for their success and wish them the best of luck in Las Vegas on the 19th of June in the World Finals! If you haven't already watched the official stream, you can watch it below via the NHL's official Twitch channel:

For the record, I don't recall saying that is my idea of how it should be. Sure, it's one of the options that people have brought up. I agree about ECL and that it should not be compromised, but talking about the options and highlighting the problematics with the different approaches is not a bad thing in my opinion. This was a bit confusing for me. Is it just business or something bigger? If you read my post, I believe you should know it's not "just business" - however, I'm sure we can agree that a smart business approach can bring sustainability and growth. One should not associate the word 'business' with 'greed' or 'evil'. There's plenty of good businesses out there that do what they do out of the love for the thing that they do and give back to the community. Nobody (unless you're a millionaire, struggling to figure out what to do with your fortune) can keep working a full-time job just purely for "something bigger" without any compensation. Yes, we have a presentation and strategy that we present to the potential partners. We'll keep you up to date with how things are going once we have something solid. You are right that "20 or 50 euro buy-in?" isn't the main question. However, since our members are asking us for buy-in leagues, I think it's fair to ask for some specifics of their expectations, don't you? It's no use creating buy-in leagues, if the specifics don't meet/exceed the members expectations.

First of all, thank you for opening up this discussion. It's always more productive to have an honest discussion than to make assumptions or go by rumours. I will do my best to cover my thoughts below and explain why we operate in the way we do. That is not to say that I think we are doing everything 100% correctly and there isn't room for improvement. Strap in and enjoy(?) the ride - wall of text incoming. Perspective Let me start off by saying that there is a large amount of different perspectives on the topics of how we should approach NHL as an esport, how quickly things have developed and how patient one should be. Our past experiences shape our minds and our ways of thinking and depending on your past, you might think my ideas and views are completely wrong, if they don't resonate with what you believe. If you know my history, heard my interview on the radio, or read about it in our recent article, you might know that I have been in the NHL gaming scene for roughly 18 years now. I've played hockey games since the 8-bit Nintendo, but what I mean about being in the scene, is that I've been in close contact with a lot of people committed to NHL-gaming lifestyle, seen the way the NHL-series producers have interacted with the community and where feedback has and hasn't been listened to. Why do I bring this up? Certainly not to brag about my age - I would much rather prefer to be a kid again - but to offer some perspective on from where we are building this. In the 18 years I've been active in the NHL community, this is easily the closest we've been to seeing the NHL video game as an actual esport. But why hasn't it happen before? Is it because people didn't want to? Is it because the people didn't put in the work? In my opinion, no - it's because the time wasn't right. I'm sure more than a few companies threw a bunch of money on a wall, but it didn't quite stick. Against this background, when looking at what NHLGamer has achieved in less than three years, I can proudly say we (the community) have created something wonderful together, something that can, and will, actually stick. From day one, I have wanted to offer paid leagues, but in my opinion the community wasn't ready for it. Now it is. When thinking about how much can be achieved in a set amount of time, one must also think about how much time can actually be allocated to the task. I worked a very demanding job throughout most of the development of NHLGamer and the ECL, so when I would come home from work, I would spend most of my free time - and often the hours I should've used for sleeping - on working on this website. The same thing applies to the other staff members, who I respect and appreciate immensely for helping out after a long day or week. This is also the reason why most people overestimate the amount of work they're able to chip in with. That's why we've seen a big change in staff over the years. It's time consuming and demanding. Roughly a year ago I decided to quit my job in Malta. It was a good job, good pay, but it was getting between my passion and me. So I quit. In order for NHLGamer to be able to operate, I have - for the past few months - been focusing all of my time and energy on giving NHLGamer and the NHL video game a chance as an esport and there's no turning back for me. If I go back to a regular day job, there is no way I can keep doing what I've been doing recently. Why am I telling you this awfully long story? Because I want you to understand my background and that I really do share the enthusiasm to want to introduce money to NHLGamer and NHL as an esport just as much as many of you do. I've put my heart and soul into the NHL community for 18 years now and NHL gaming is finally starting to get the recognition it deserves. There is no way we're stopping now. Vision Max (@gzell60) explained above quite well what we want to achieve. And before I go into that, let me point out that Max and I (and the rest of the team) don't agree about everything. No, it doesn't mean that we argue and fight - it simply means that we have different views on how certain things should go. So we discuss them together, as a team and eventually it forms a product. Why did I bring this up? Well, for example Max doesn't like the idea of buy-in's as much as I do and I agree with him, that it is easily an approach that creates a closed community and shuts people and teams out. Not everyone wants it. This is why I'm happy to do buy-ins, but it shouldn't be the only thing driving our leagues, as I think it's a quite short-sighted attempt at happiness. You don't need season previews, interviews, stats, streams or any of that to run a buy-in league. But to produce a product that is interesting and approachable to a crowd that isn't necessarily even playing the game themselves - that's where content and the love that we have for the ECL comes in handy. We don't have to fake it, we don't have to do magic tricks. We do however, have to work hard and I know we have in the recent months. We are extremely proud to have signed a two year contract on the Finnish Championship license - called eSM - for NHL and FIFA. We just announced it tonight and you can read our story here: This is an amazing thing for our community and our plans to keep developing the sport and teaching the world about 6vs6. I want to to underline here that the focus is not off ECL. On the contrary, we are talking to potential partners for ECL 7 and about introducing prizes and live finals. So please don't think that we are only planning to cater for the Finnish community. We realize that sadly, not everyone can take part in the Finnish championships, but we are continuously working on different initiatives that will either be something for everybody, or for example for Sweden and other countries, who might feel left out. Keep in mind, our staff is from Finland, Sweden, Germany, Latvia, Britain and France. There's plenty of people internally who want to see things happen in their home country, so rest assured this is an international mission. With eSM 2018 for FIFA taking place already in the summer, it makes sense to talk about it now. Similarly, you will see a lot of Summer Cup communication in the upcoming weeks and months. The communication moving from the ECL to another subject in no way reflects on our work ethic, passion and drive to set up an amazing ECL 7 for NHL 19, but we are also extremely proud of the Summer Cup and the eSM license and they will take the spotlight from time to time, as they should. "But do you realize how annoying it is to not know what is going to happen? Why don't you just tell us everything?" When I think about it, yes. Sometimes it's hard to remember that the community doesn't know what we're up to. Most of the time, actually. So why do I or we do it? Why don't we just tell you every detail about our plans? Well, there's several reasons, but from a customer service perspective and as a general rule in life, I have the mentality of "under-promise, over-deliver" which is a good recipe for pleasant surprises. I've not always been good at this, but that's beyond the point. I don't want to tell you something that I don't know is going to happen. I don't want to promise you something and then have to let you down. That is also why donations weren't introduced to the site early on, even when people suggested it; I wanted to prove that we are worthy of it. Another big reason for being secretive or quiet about things is that until documents are signed and things are made official, negotiations are simply negotiations. It doesn't really matter how close we were to the biggest successful event ever, if it doesn't actually happen. We would rather surprise you positively, than to get your hopes up and then deliver half of what we expected to. Not to mention that it would be super unprofessional to give out information before it's been agreed to, between all parties. In some cases, if you disclose information you were not allowed to and you've signed an NDA (non-disclosure agreement), you could have to pay a large amount for a breach of contract. Not to mention that they would never work with you again. All of the above being said, I do understand getting impatient and worried when nothing is communicated. We will do our best to improve on communication and the ability to share at least something. Feel free to reach out and ask, if that feeling sneaks in. "Umm.. yeah, great, but what about those of us who don't want to play for money?" There's plenty of people that want to play just for fun and don't want to stress over money and we understand that very well. Worry not. We plan to always offer free to play leagues and tournaments. "What about legal issues?" We plan to do everything by the book and follow the law. It is very short-sighted to plan anything else but a legitimate and legal way to handle the money. Taxes will be paid. Remember, this is simply a stepping stone towards professionalism - not a quick cash-grab. Questions from me to you So, the beauty of this community is that we have a lot of great minds with a shared passion for the game. We agree on many things and we have other opinions on other things. Let's use this thread to discuss your hopes, dreams and expectations. I'll start off with a few questions off the top of my head, based on the discussion above. For the sake of the clarity, I will use the term buy-in league, indicating that the teams or players were to pay for entry. NOTE: The below are hypothetical questions and the questions in themselves are in no way a statement to what we will or won't do in the future. Would you join a buy-in league? How much would you be ready to pay for being part of a buy-in league? Would you expect to win this league and regain the money or the full prize? What sort of sum would be acceptable as the prize in the first season of the buy-in league? How would you expect the prize pool to be split between the teams in the league? How long of a season would you expect in a buy-in league? How often would you participate in a buy-in league? If the league was separate from the ECL, would you then prioritize it over the ECL? Do you think ECL should be a buy-in league? Do you think certain divisions should be buy-in, such as ECL Elite? Hypothetically, say ECL Elite and Pro had buy-ins - what would stop an Elite caliber team for signing up for Pro in order to get "an easy" tournament win and prize money? If you are against buy-ins or on the fence about the topic - what would be a small enough amount for you to join and still be able to have fun? That's just a few questions that come to mind around the subject. Feel free to come up with more. If you had the energy to read through the whole thing - thank you! I will return the favor. TL;DR: Money leagues are coming, but we are also not forgetting about members who don't want to play for money. Please discuss your expectations, so we can do our best to exceed them. Together we are strong. ⚔️

Hey NHLGamers, What a fantastic night of hockey we had last night in the three first games of ECL Pro Finals between Monarchs and FILADELPHIA! You can read our Pro Finals Preview here if you didn't already do so. Many predicted this series would be very one-sided for FILA and based on the first three games, boy were those predictions off! FILA managed to leave the first night in a 2-1 series lead, but they needed a bit of luck to do so. Monarchs played strong especially in games 2 and 3 and if they can continue playing like that, we should see a close series finish tonight! The scores in the series so far: Game 1: Monarchs - FILADELPHIA 0-1 Game 2: FILADELPHIA - Monarchs 2-4 Game 3: Monarchs - FILADELPHIA 1-2 The remaining games have been scheduled to be played at approximately these times tonight: Game 4: Wednesday 25th of April 2018 21:00 CEST Game 5: Wednesday 25th of April 2018 21:30 CEST Game 6: Wednesday 25th of April 2018 22:00 CEST (If necessary) Game 7: Wednesday 25th of April 2018 22:30 CEST (If necessary) All of the Pro Finals games are broadcasted, so get ready to watch the action on our Twitch channel! Our broadcast of game 4 and onwards starts tonight at 20:45 CEST. The games will feature commentary by @Kenu and @Panarinz. The teams will continue with the same line-ups as last night: Who is your favorite? Who do you expect to win? Will we see some OT-drama? Let us know in the comments! We'll see you tonight at twitch.tv/NHLGamerTwitch

Hey NHLGamers, The ECL Playoff will continue tonight! Starting at 20:30 CEST. We are covering a few exciting matchups tonight, hope you can join us in the stream! We will kick off the Relegation Faceoff between Almost Famous and Pata Hellalla, who have agreed to play three games tonight. After the first game of that series, we will be continuing the semi-finals between Northern Ascendancy and Written In The Stars that currently stands 3-1 to Ascendancy. The teams have agreed to finish the series tonight, so we will see 1-3 games between them, depending on the outcome. Nordic Stars and White Trash also continue their Relegation Faceoff series, currently tied at 2-2. The series will start at 21:00 CEST and when we are done with the Elite Semi Finals, we will jump into which ever Relegation Series is still going on and exciting at that point! The games will be broadcasted on the NHLGamer Twitch channel, at twitch.tv/NHLGamerTwitch. The games will feature commentary by @Janikka and @Kenu. We'll see you there! UPDATE: We are also covering Carlsberg HC - Dynasty, starting at 20:00 CEST! Hey NHLGamers, The ECL Playoffs continue tonight and we might be celebrating an ECL Lite champion tonight! Starting at 19:50 CEST, be sure to join our ECL Playoff stream, as we cover an amazing three matchups. The first one will be between ECL Elite semi finalists Carlsberg HC and Dynasty. Below you'll find our prediction for this series: Games so far in the series (home team to the right): Game 1: Carlsberg HC - Dynasty 0-4 Game 2: Dynasty - Carlsberg HC 0-3 Game 3: Carlsberg HC - Dynasty 1-0 OT The first three games were played yesterday and while Dynasty started off strong with a 4-0 win, Carlsberg were able to end the night with a 1-0 OT win and a 2-1 series lead. Northern Ascendancy and Written In The Stars. Below you'll find our prediction for this series: Games so far in the series (home team to the right): Game 1: Northern Ascendancy - Written In The Stars 3-0 Game 2: Written In The Stars - Northern Ascendancy 2-3 While Written In The Stars was the favorite going into this semi final pairing, Northern Ascendancy managed to improve their game from what we saw in the quarter final round and ended up walking away from the first night with two deserved wins. The series is far from over, though, and we're sure Written In The Stars brought some new tricks up their sleeves for tonight and look to bounce back and tie the series. The teams have agreed to play two games tonight. After this, we go to the ECL Lite Finals, where EV Duisburg is only one win away from the Lite championship. The games are scheduled to start at 22:15 CEST. You can read our original prediction about the series below: Games so far in the series (home team to the right): Game 1: EV Duisburg - Cowabunga Hockey 2-1 Game 2: Cowabunga Hockey - EV Duisburg 0-1 Game 3: EV Duisburg - Cowabunga Hockey 2-0 As you can see, we predicted an even series here, so it's not a surprise that EV Duisburg has been able to win games in this series. However, what surprised us, is that they are already up 3-0 and could even sweep the series. All of the games so far have been really close, so don't miss the chance to see if Cowabunga Hockey can bounce back and even force a game seven, or if EV Duisburg will be hoisting the cup tonight. The teams have agreed to play two games tonight. You can see tonight's lineups for each team in the image below: The games will be broadcasted on the NHLGamer Twitch channel, at twitch.tv/NHLGamerTwitch. The games will feature commentary by @Kenuand @esdor. We'll see you there!

Hey NHLGamers, The ECL Playoff continue tonight! Starting at 20:15 CEST, be sure to join our ECL Playoff stream, as we continue yet another two exciting matchups tonight. The first one will be faught between ECL Elite teams Carlsberg HC and Sjukstugan - a good Finland - Sweden matchup! Below you'll find our original prediction for this series: Games so far in the series (home team to the right): Game 1: Sjukstugan - Carlsberg HC 3-1 Game 2: Carlsberg HC - Sjukstugan 5-1 The teams have agreed to play three games tonight, so there is a hypothetical chance that one team secures their place in the semi finals tonight. However, that's highly unlikely with these evenly matched up teams. Whatever the result tonight, the expectation is a very high-skilled hockey night between these two. After this, we jump right over to ECL Pro, where SIKA and White Trash will decide who's going to the semi finals. The games are scheduled to start at 21:40 CEST. You can read our original prediction about the series below: There's been five games played in this series so far and White Trash came out strong, winning the first two with quite big numbers. Someone might have expected even a sweep after that, but SIKA came back strong in their next session, winning games 3 and 5 and losing game 4 by only one goal. SIKA continues to play with their backs to the walls. No more losses allowed. Tonight we'll see if this experienced bunch can come back from this, or if White Trash can find the tools to clinch it. Games so far in the series (home team to the right): Game 1: White Trash - SIKA 4-0 Game 2: SIKA - White Trash 1-5 Game 3: White Trash - SIKA 0-1 Game 4: SIKA - White Trash 3-4 Game 5: White Trash - SIKA 1-2 You can see tonight's lineups for each team in the image below: The games will be broadcasted on the NHLGamer Twitch channel, at twitch.tv/NHLGamerTwitch. The games will feature commentary by @gzell60 and @Kenu. We'll see you there!

Hey NHLGamers, It's time for some ECL Elite Playoff action tonight! Starting at 19:45 CEST, be sure to join our ECL Playoff stream, as we continue two very exciting matchups tonight. The first one will be the battle between ECL Elite teams Dynasty and SJK eSports. Below you'll find our original prediction for this series: The teams played four games so far and while it looked like Dynasty was going to sweep the series, SJK eSports came back in game 4 and made the series 3-1. Games so far in the series (home team to the right): Game 1: SJK eSports - Dynasty 1-2 Game 2: Dynasty - SJK eSports 4-3 Game 3: SJK eSports - Dynasty 1-4 Game 4: Dynasty - SJK eSports 0-4 SJK eSports has their backs to the wall tonight, but don't count them out quite yet. Whatever happens, the teams will finish this series tonight, so don't miss this action! After this, we jump right over to another exciting ECL ECL pair as Written In The Stars and Northern Stars continue their series. The teams have agreed to play up to two games tonight and the puck drop for game 5 will be at 21:00 CEST. You can read our original prediction about the series below: While very even on the ice, Written In the Stars has been able to take control of the series and lead the series 3-1. It's noteworthy that all of the games have ended with a one goal difference and two of them in OT. In game 3 Northern Stars had an opportunity to take control of the series, as they had a 2-1 lead and got a penalty shot with 40 seconds to go. They didn't score here and Written In The Stars bounced back. Quite the display of calmness in a tough situation one might say. The same kind of calmness will be needed from Northern Stars tonight, as they try to get three wins in a row with their back against the wall. We can't wait to see what kind of show these teams put up for us tonight! Games so far in the series (home team to the right): Game 1: Northern Stars - Written In The Stars 1-2 OT Game 2: Written In The Stars - Northern Stars 0-1 Game 3: Northern Stars - Written In The Stars 2-3 OT Game 4: Written In The Stars - Northern Stars 1-0 You can see tonight's lineups for each team in the image below: The games will be broadcasted on the NHLGamer Twitch channel, at twitch.tv/NHLGamerTwitch.
