Hello NHLGamers, Going to keep it short and sweet for now by presenting the ECL 3 Playoff Pairings for Round 1. A playoff tree will be up tomorrow to provide you all with a visual guide for how the playoffs are progressing. Also, @Kenu will have further details for you regarding how the final weeks of the regular season shook out in a post tomorrow (including information on cases and rulings) but for now the staff would like to thank all the participants of this enormous tournament for giving it your all. Words were said, frustrations vented but above all - great hockey was played. That final ingredient is only going to get better in the coming weeks so without further ado, here are the teams battling for the ECL 3 Trophy: (Group 1 teams left, Group 2 teams right) Northern Stars - Free From Rodents Written In The Stars - Nordic Nosebleed X Factor - Kattiautomatti Finnish Roosters - Alliance HT Nordic Blizzard - murohoki Dynasty - Knight Aces HC Refuse To Lose - TIKI TALK Fat Cats - Inter Iceland White Trash - Northern Ascendancy Warriors of Kongo - Nordic Nightmare HC Checkmate - MUKIMIEHET sjukstugan - Nordic Lightning Rynnäkköviikset - SIKA Silver Sword Griffins - Synergy Hockey Falun Coal Miners - Aapon Taikasauva No Guts No Glory - Laser HT Be sure to tune in tomorrow for more great (hopefully not mediocre) stuff when me and @vSilenttio will be predicting the playoffs in a Playoff Preview post. Lots of great action to look forward to in other words, even besides the games. Good luck in the playoffs. // NHLGamer Staff8 points

SIKA presents: Truth of Hockey S1E2 - Lets Talk Playoffs Tuesday 18:00FIN, 20/12/2016. Our guests this time are @Dominointi (Laser HT) and @Elmeri7 (Nordic Nightmare). Me, @SpiderRoyal and @Anbtbl will represent SIKA. Our main subject is only playoffs this time as we will talk about other stuff next time - on our third episode of ToH. Yes, and we know - all of our members play in Group 2 but we will try our best! In our third episode (coming in January) - we will have @tbnantti and @Dominointi as our guests - third guest spot is still under work. @imosi will replace Anbtbl in SIKA's side of the table. Subjects of third episode are going to be ECL 3 playoffs, ECL 4, general NHLGamer stuff (what is going on?) and some specific cases that we will announce later. Also, we will have story time (atleast I hope so) as we are more than interested to hear and share stories of Imosi, Seppo and Antti. Cheers boys!4 points

So in this topic I will share the story of our team (Drop Zone). And because we didn't make to play-offs this contains just regular season. It should be nice to read other teams stories also DZ has some tough opponents at start and in the end. 1. opponent was Northern Ascendancy, which The_Alpha_Furyan in Season 3 - Preview -post, was placed 3th in our group. And we managed to win our first game in season, that is always good starting point, right? (spoiler: keep reading). Our second game they pushed even harder game to our end (time on attack 09:19 vs. 03:46) and in the last minute they manage to get 3-2 winning goal. Next Sika, one of most underrated teams in there. I just put shots on goals here to give some perspective about these games: Sika: 33, DZ: 14. You do the math. Synenergy: 1. game close one 4-3 to SYN. Second game started good with SYN couple of penalties, but they made first goal in shorthanded. Our teamplay didin't work after that goal. Then they did one powerplay goal then shorthanded goal and then shorthanded goal. Ah almost forgot one powerplay goal more. Last 2 minutes and stats were 5-1, but two more goals to SYN before game ends. Not much tell to grand-children about that. Terrific Tigers: 1. game, nothing special 4-2 win to us. Second game was closer. We take in first 13 minutes 3-0 lead, but they come even with powerplay goal and with goal at 59.24. But we manage to make our machine runnig again at time 78.27. Overtime win. Huge thanks to TT Goalie for that. 18 saves. Next Aapon Taikasauva: What you can do with 2-3 minutes of attack time versus 9 minutes? AK-47: First game: clean 3-0 win. And personally only shutout in whole season. Second game should be like that, but no. AK's goalie make huge game and they deseserved a win for that. Alliance HT: Both games were almost identical: We was behind all areas and top of that games were pretty fragmented, because of so many penalties. 2 x lost. Tiki Talk: One of worst defence that we have in entire season. All things that can be wrong was wrong. Bare Knuckles Hockey: First game, First period, 3 powerplay goals for us so game was over. Second game: We take 6 penalties and they make 2 PPGs. Result 5-3 to Bare. EN HUND: First game: 0 penalties and 5 goals, it was really good game us. Second game was goalie fight (not with fists of course ). Shots on goal (both teams): 29, goals: 3. We have 2 goals Free From Rodents: Their goalie has bad day: 25 shots and 12 goals including 3 goals in 1.24. HC Marilyn: One of those games that you should get some critical point out of it. But Luck-Gods say: Nope. We had 4 post shots in games and we just go in their trap what they have putted in their zone. 2 x lost. Lunatic Lions: First game, 7 penalties. 2-1 to Lunatic. If we should find something positive we make our only goal in shorthanded. Second game started bad also: They get shorthanded goal, but we pushed hard and with 8 minutes of time on attack managed to get 3-2 win for second game. Kattiautomaatti: Again same story, First game, 9 penalties, 2 powerplay goals, 6-2 lost. Second game we show what we are made for: 18 shots, 5 goals and for me: 91 save%. Nordic Lightning: Start of end of season and hard games. We played good, but good isn't enough for these top teams. 0-2 and 6-2 losts for these good games. Knight Aces HC: Good matches, both of them. But when we make to the attack zone Aces make good defence play and we must make risk passes and just stay in the corners. 2 x lost. Laser HT: NOPE. Pretty good games for us, but again that is not enough. 9 penalties in both games to find something to improve in the future... Inter Iceland: Close games. We should have deserved more than just 1 point. In first game we was in lead 2-1 before 3rd period, but they make 3 goals in there. Second game was goal making contest. Last minute we make game even 5-5, but in overtime they scored and get 5 point in our 2 games. MUKIMIEHET: And again some top teams. In 1st game we take the lead, but 2nd and 3rd period are their control 1-3 lost from that. Second game was even stronger game from MUKIMIEHET. Shots on goal 13-1. Yes you read it right we got only one shot in goal and even if it has gone in we would still lose it: Result was 2-0. murohoki: Important games for us: Play-off place at stake. Must take least 3 points. We was in lead 3-1, but here they come and overtime it was. At the end of overtime period as said in Press Conference: "Sami Noddactius wanted to be Patrik Laine, but luckily our GM has paid well enough for referees." Our attacker hitted with it skate-end murohoki's goalie and their defender backhand-slapped puck in own goal (with R1). In NHL that should be a goal but not in the game... Second game was good even game that went also in overtime, but in this time our win. I'm personally happy that game myself too: 12 saves, 1 GA, S% 92,3 Nordic Nightmare: Brace yourself, winter is coming... They played good games and we wasn't best players available so 5-2 and 7-1 losses. Nordic Nosebleed: Last games to get to playoffs we needed 5 point at least against Nordic Nosebleed to make it and after that it isn't certain. So it is do or di..ehm do not. (there is no try). 1st game 1-1 to overtime aaanddd they did a goal. So 1 point to us and playoff place gone. Second game has no meaning for us so it was really: Let just play it out of day order: 6-3 lost. So thank you, if you have read it, hope it bring some light about how Drop Zone's season went. If you ask me we would make to the playoff's if so many of those teams didn't quit. We lose so many points from them and our closest rivals lost some games from them (and get those points back). As a closing words: It isn't what you bring in the ice it is what you left behind.3 points

Hey NHL Gamers, The playoffs are here! It’s time to look at our last batch of rulings during the end of the regular season. Again, we do apologise for taking more than a week to process some of the decisions. As mentioned previously, we aim to streamline this process to be more efficient in the future. In fact, we are looking for more staff members that are able to contribute to our website. If you feel you have what it takes to bring some value to our website – feel free to send me a PM and tell me what you bring to the table. This installment of NHL Gamer Staff rulings covers the following topics: Walkover requests a. HC Checkmate – Silver Sword Griffins b. Fat Cats – Silver Sword Griffins c. No Guts No Glory – Nordic Blizzard d. AK47 – Nordic Nosebleeds e. Nordic Nosebleeds – Bare Knuckles Hockey f. No Guts No Glory – La Suède g. Northern Ascendancy – Terrific Tigers h. Nordic Blizzard – HC Soittorasia The case of the glitched player: Silver Sword Griffins – Finnish Roosters Missing game stats 1. Walkover requests Boy, oh boy did we have a lot of walkover requests. I will mention that the below cases have been simplified for the reading (and writing) pleasure and may give more of a black and white picture of the case than the reality of things. 1a. Northern Ascendancy – Terrific Tigers Terrific Tigers weren’t responding to communication from Northern Ascendancy and even staff thought the Terrific Tigers had left the league, until we got a response at the last minute. Northern Ascendancy was awarded the walkover wins. 1b. Nordic Blizzard – HC Soittorasia The teams were communicating actively in order to get the games going, but as HC Soittorasia failed to get their full 6 on ice despite several attempts, they eventually decided to hand out the walkovers to Nordic Blizzard. 1c. No Guts No Glory – Nordic Blizzard No Guts No Glory asked about the possibility to get walk over wins due to issues with agreeing on a functional date to play vs Nordic Blizzard. Both teams were communicating actively, but what worked for the other, didn’t work for the other team. The NHLGamer staff didn’t see a reason to award either team with WO’s, as both have been active and Nordic Blizzard had been available to play on the default date. Instead, we gave the teams an extra day to play the games. Sadly, No Guts No Glory was unable to play on that day and decided to give walkover wins to Nordic Blizzard. 1d. AK47 – Nordic Nosebleeds A member of Nordic Nosebleeds was having problems with his internet connection during the last day of regular season and despite several attempts they weren’t able to get the full 6 men on ice. Nordic Nosebleeds suggested playing with 5 against AK47’s 6, but AK47 refused, as it is against the rules. Nordic Nosebleeds handed AK47 the walkover wins. 1e. Nordic Nosebleeds – Bare Knuckles Hockey This one is pretty much a carbon copy for what we have ruled on before. Neither team had communicated with each other before the default game date and time and 9 minutes before the default game time Nordic Nosebleeds approached Bare Knuckles Hockey asking if they are ready to play. See "On the matter of the games that were scheduled between Rusty Blades and Refuse To Lose (October 27th)" in Staff Rulings, Part 2 for the previous ruling: While we do agree that Bare Knuckles Hockey didn’t do their part, we want to remind everyone, that we will not accept walk over requests of game times that are simply based on assumption. That is not to say that the schedule isn’t to be honored, but if you plan to play on the scheduled day and time, please let your opponent know. If not, also let them know. After their mistake, Bare Knuckles Hockey asked Nordic Nosebleeds to play on another day, but according to BKH, they were told they can’t play for two weeks. Due to these circumstances, we allowed the teams the extra day to battle it off on the ice. Nordic Nosebleeds immediately refused this decision, so we had no other option than to give the walkover wins to Bare Knuckles Hockey. 1f. No Guts No Glory – La Suède We were told that La Suède can’t play and they will give the walk overs to No Guts No Glory. We approached La Suède to confirm and made sure both teams understood a) what an important matchup this is for the overall standings and b) that we can allow them one extra day to finish this matchup. La Suède informed us that they can’t play, so we had no other option but to honor the walkover requests. 1g. HC Checkmate – Silver Sword Griffins These two teams had been trying to find a matching game time for quite a while (with HC Checkmate being more available) and they finally did. Sadly, about an hour before the first match was supposed to take place, the Silver Sword Griffins informed HC Checkmate that one of their players had been banned from PSN and that they are looking for a solution. Despite their best efforts, and after confirming that this was a console ban and not a profile ban, SSG was unable to get 6 men on the ice. Both teams were actively communicating in this case and SSG was trying their best to offer alternative game times for the match, but they did not work for HC Checkmate. Also, the fact that HC Checkmate had cancelled job shifts and important hobbies to be available for this game time made the cancellation extra hard for them. As both teams were active and the cancellation of the games last minute was unintentional, we wanted to offer the teams the possibility to play on the extra day. Sadly, HC Checkmate couldn’t make it at such short notice. The staff, however, had to rule in HC Checkmates favour in this case, as they had been the more available team and were not responsible for the original games not being played, so the walkover wins were given to HC Checkmate. 1h. Fat Cats – Silver Sword Griffins The games between Fat Cats and Silver Sword Griffins were to take place after the above game. These games were cancelled due to the same circumstances as that game. This game was even more late due to problems agreeing on scheduling and Fat Cats had been the more available party. As with the above case, we tried giving the teams the option of settling the games on the ice, but Fat Cats were unable to make it on such short notice. Again, as in the above case, Fat Cats had been the more active and available team, so we awarded them with the walkover wins. 2. The case of the glitched player: Silver Sword Griffins – Finnish Roosters This case has been discussed widely throughout the community in the last few days and as far as we know, the teams have put this behind them, so please feel free to comment your opinion on the matter itself, but let's not attack either team over it. As this case is quite extensive and @ProMinx24 from Silver Sword Grinnis wrote his thoughts about the case in quite a well formulated manner (including also one of the Finnish Roosters in the PM thread), I have decided to embed his view of the case, the opponents reply and our verdict. Please note that the quotes are released as both teams were ok with this being public. PM's in general are treated as personal communication and are not shared under normal circumstances. Let's start off with the quote from SSG: The reply from FR: There was some irrelevant posts in-between, and below you have the staff verdict: In the end, Finnish Roosters wanted to continue the game from the 3-2 FR lead and chose not to follow our recommendation. As far as I understood, after some debate, the teams agreed to play the entire 1st period (as the 3rd period) starting from the 3-2 lead. No further goals were scored and FR won the game. As you can see in the quote, the staff is planning to introduce some changes to the rules. The question of course is, where do you draw the line - where should we step in and where not? There's a good discussion going on at the moment about how community users think these sort of issues should be handled: It's a very good topic to discuss and we hope to hear as many of our members voicing their opinions about the topic. 3. Missing game stats There are quite an amount of games still missing stats. In some cases, it is the staff’s fault for not fixing issues that have been reported. But in cases where it hasn’t been reported and a game is missing stats, please fix it immediately. If you need assistance, please let the staff know. Failure to comply with adding stats for every game may (after warning) lead to team diqualification. We thank all the teams for their efforts in making the long regular season successful and wish the playoff teams good luck! On behalf of the NHL Gamer staff,3 points

I disagree with the idea that staff should only be allowed to make a ruling if there are rules that cover said situations. I feel like the solution of having vague rules would only be there as a "checkmark" and it would still leave a room for people to argue the "it's not in the rules, it's fair game". You're essentially adapting the same thing I'm asking for, just with a vague set of rules to go with it. Here's an example. If I remember correctly in one of the Pro League finals for Rainbow Six Siege in Bank - a professional esports scene - there was an invisibility glitch that happened during one of the matches. No rules covered said situation, they contacted the admins and Ubisoft developers(in our case it would be the staff), asked for their decision and they canceled that whole round. The players themselves had no say in this decision. And that's an esports competition with serious prize pool of $75 000. Actually, here's a link to the video: The whole thing starts at around 1 hour 50 minutes. The build-up is rather slow as the casters don't have the information right away, but they start discussing the actual bug and the solution at 2 hours 5 minutes and then 2 hours 13 minutes. Would love to see what @Kenu take on this is. Bottom line - this example shows how things like these are handled in a professional environment. I don't understand why we need to reinvent the wheel and try to make things even more complicated by potentially leaving room for other issues.3 points

If I'm not mistaken the staff have already demonstrated the ability to amend rules on the fly when issues were brought up, such as the arena props thing. So that's a non-issue imo. Now, should there be a rule about players freezing similar to players disconnecting? Sure why not? I think everyone agrees here. It's a little unfair to blame them for not having the amendment ready when this was the first instance where people complained about this glitch in any significant way. Non-issue. Should the rules be updated? Of course. For instance the disconnection rules are written for NHL16 at a time when club challenges were not possible. And let's face it, the people who chose to give one team the choice between leaving immediately and waiting till the end of the period, those people were wrong. Since once again everyone seems to be in favor of leaving games right when people disconnect it should be the rule in the future. There's a few items like this that need rethinking. The book is already updated every season. Could it be done better? Sure, and I myself complained about the rulebook updates that I believe are retarded. But at least the process is ongoing, it's just a matter of resources on the task imo. Issue? Meh, kinda but not really... Back to the FR vs SSG incident, I have not followed the story that much but if the staff made a ruling about this occurrence of the freezing glitch, at least it sets a precedent for the remainder of the tournament, or as I said they can just add a rule like they have already done in this very tournament. If they don't do either of these things, THEN you can complain about the staff. Yay! One last thing: The staff already has plenty ernough power, and in fact I would advocate for them to have less, but that would come with more accountability from other people. I have written in the ECL wishlist thread that I wanted to see a board of team GM's that would be, among other things, tasked with approving rulebooks and rule changes on the fly throughout seasons. I think it's time people embraced the rulebook which is the key to this tournament structure, rather than take it for granted and then complain about détails. Of course, if you've already embraced it, you are free to complain about it to your heart's content and in a constructive way. Like I do lol.3 points

Definitely no! "Nulla poena sine lege (Latin for "no penalty without a law") is a legal principle, requiring that one cannot be punished for doing something that is not prohibited by law. This principle is accepted and codified in modern democratic states as a basic requirement of the rule of law.[1]" There can't be actions taken without the support of rules. This does not mean that rules need to be exhaustive. They can be specific or general, including excluding, exhaustive non exhaustive, its about writing the right type of rule for a certain situation.2 points

What the title says! I wanna see if this could work here. Lets get our playoff predictions listed here, round by round. Because we like tl compete on lots of stuff, for every guess - you get points. Correct winner and correct result: three points Correct winner: two points Correct result: one point (wrong winner but numbers match) So to be clear here - you can get max. 3 points per one pair. If nothing's right, no points. If you get right numbers, but wrong winner, you'll have one point. Having only the winner right, you get two points out of three and then both being correct (winner team and the result) gives you three points. Copy & paste from here so it's easier to check our results later. In light of the recent events I feel like it's time to take a closer look at the current regulations and their purpose. As Finnish Roosters demonstrated, there are still some cancerous teams in this community that will try to further their cause at all costs. Their lack of class, sportsmanship and fair play is evident to everyone. As seen in their post-game comment - they have the "if it's not in the rules, it's a fair game" mindset. To keep teams like this in check we need to refine the current rulebook and the way it's used. Rules should be considered as a tool that the staff can use in order to enforce basic standards and behavior. Not "be all, say all" kinda deal. The final decision and authority should still come down to the staff. In unique circumstances where there are no rules covering the specific situation, they should still have the ability to make a ruling that the teams are required to follow. A recommendation that they can just ignore - that's not good enough. Currently it looks like the staff's hands are tied by the very same rules that are supposed to be there to help them. The result? A situation where a team(Finnish Roosters) essentially can chose whichever solution suits them the best, completely ignoring fair play, sportsmanship and the core goal of the regulations - providing fair, competitive environment. As seen, our community clearly isn't mature enough to be able to look at these things objectively and come up with a reasonable solution. The glitches will come and go and the staff needs to have the ability to react on the fly, implement new rules if required and enforce them accordingly. It's a game, there will be bugs. Same with the rulebook and loopholes in it. The community clearly isn't able to deal with it and seeing how some people behave - simple A-Z regulations in my eyes don't work. As such I urge people to start an early discussion about the current rules and the potential changes to them for the upcoming ECL 4. For example, a thing that somehow slipped everyone - Gs bunny hop bug(https://clips.twitch.tv/thecreasetv/CalmDogUnSane). If something like this happens, will it be treated the same as the situation between SSG vs FR where it's up to the opponent to decide what they want to do? All down to whenever or not the other team is understanding and values sportsmanship/fair play enough to clear the puck? Seems a bit fucked up, especially when we've seen what Finnish Roosters would do with the "read the rules, it's not there" mindset.1 point

I was hoping I didn't have to go into a deeper explanation but here we go. The rules are not vague. The one I just took as an example is a non exhaustive general rule to adress the issue that EA glitches that have a serious impact on a teams ability to defend themselves, should not be responsible for goals. Now this is the aim of the rule. As with any rule there needs to be an aim, or a goal so to speak. So once the aim is established you need to decide what type of rule would suit the need. Sometimes the rule needs to be specific to exclude other similar situations or behaviour, but sometimes the rule needs to be non exhaustive so it doesn't exclude similar situations that still falls within the aim of the rule. This does not make the rule vague. Admins will always play a key roll because they are the ones interpreting the situations according with the rules. But to say for example - your behaviour is bad even if it is not in the rules, lets have admins decided what to do - is not very appropriate. In that case we might as well just have a vote in such instances (where people will vote what is in their team's best interest). Or we just go back to the old "tgma decides" and no one knows what is right or wrong until admins made their decision.1 point

What are you disagreeing with? I said things need to be covered by the rulebook to be applicable. Rules and law is essentially the same thing. The difference is rules applies to certain people for certain things where law applies to everybody within its reach. Rules can cover everything if they are smart enough. For example name a possible glitch similar to SSGs that would counter a rule that said "any goal occured through a glitch not triggered by any of the participating members, shall not count" Just an example1 point

Yes, they have demonstrated their ability to change the rules and adapt when it comes down to relatively easy subjects where there's little risk of backlash from the community. That said, when it's about something that will rough feathers - they play softball. From what I've heard, in the case between SSG and FR it changed. Instead of issuing an actual ruling and adapting, they went with a recommendation where the side that benefited from the glitch could still keep the advantage and completely disregard their recommendation. Now looking at the game report - the score stayed the same and goal was deemed as a good goal. I don't know about you, but in my eyes that's far from a "non-issue" when the staff recognizes that there's something wrong, but can't enforce it and leave it up to the teams to decide. We've clearly seen multiple times that this community isn't ready for something like that. Basically they've set a precedent where if a member of a "Team X" gets stuck in an animation(worst case scenario it's G) and the "Team Y" scores, directly benefiting from this bug, it's up to "Team Y" to decide if they count it as a good goal. At the end the main thing that I want to get is a clear indication of staff's position. As you said - at one point they have the power to change things, yet at another their hands are tied. This is crucial for integrity of any future tournaments as there are plenty of people who have the mindset of "if it's not in the rules, it's a fair game". People basically need to know if the administration can enforce a ruling even in the cases when something pops up that's not in the rulebook... Or are we looking at a situation where everything needs to be covered in the rulebook and there are no rulings that can be made if the regulations don't cover said incidents. Anyway, I have a feeling that Kenu's report will shed some much needed light on these recent events. Now to GMs - I'm personally all for giving the actual players more ways to have their voices heard and give them a chance to mold this tournament to their liking. That said, the staff should still be solely responsible for enforcing the actual rules. Also with the current division system, if something like that comes to life, every division should be represented, not just the "elite".1 point

I agree! In a perfect world there wouldn't be any vagueness in rules. So maybe it does need a revamp. A glitched out goalie definitely needs to be added to the rules. As for the FR v SSG case, only SSG broke the rules by leaving the game.1 point
