  1. Thanks for the encouragement. I would perhaps not be the best candidate to run a defending school. When it comes to the current era of the ECL, I've only played in Pro (and a bit in Lite), so it would probably be good for someone guiding others to have experience from the top league and know what it takes to get to that level.

  2. Really interesting, thanks for doing this and reporting on the outcome. I'd like to see more of this kind of thing, and I'd love to see teams at least in ECL Elite take the next step in competitiveness by having dedicated coaching. As long as this scene doesn't stagnate or regress (and we've unfortunately seen some signs of that), I think that would be a natural step for teams to gain an edge over the competition.

  3. Thank you very much, @Kenu and the other SportsGamer admins as well as everyone else who helped find a quick solution to this problem. A shout-out to @FlyerKungen and @pakjiz who both also have DNA, are affected by this problem, and were active in bringing it to people's attention (FlyerKungen even made DNA and EA aware of it). Also thank you to everyone who participated in the relevant threads and polls as you all helped keep this issue on the front burner.

Sorry for the corny acceptance speech there, I'm just really happy we got a quick ruling to work around this problem before the season started. I know there are dozens of players like me who can now start their season without having to worry about playing some of their games with packet loss.

Here's hoping EA can fix it as soon as possible so the Finnish and Russian players can play their home games with the lowest ping.

Cry me a river. How constructive is it to facepalm 42 messages without writing your own opinion?

You can see my opinion in the beginning of this thread. My other opinion good deleted last night by some swedish admins at the swedish server where I showed the community some facts. And that cancel culture is not on me.

    ---

    Okey, but here we are.

And you can get my second opinion about this. (Cuz you asked about it)

There is NO players from Elite in this thread that is complaining about this decision. Cuz this benefits them all. They get the money. And they know it.

There is no players AT ALL from elite in this thread that is even showing some understanding for the teams in the lower divisions and what it means for them.

Im not a player that is playing in Elite nowadays, but still, this will not affect me at all cuz I have an organization that is supporting our team with things like this.

Pretty much the same situation as it is for the teams in Elite.

But still -I'm here showing my opinion about this crap. Cuz I do understand that this will affect a lot of teams from the lower decisions, teams that now considering moving themselves to the NEO-division cuz they don't have the money or the motivation to spons the higher divisions.

Yes, I havs been here for a very long time as you mentioned. And with that I also know how this scene works. I also know that a cancel culture is a pretty bad thing. I also know that there is people sitting at discord pep-talking me to say the things im actually saying cuz they are to scrared to say them by themselves.

I also know that some players from the higher divisions also only care about the money and not the community. Which we have seen a several of times lately (with teams not showing up for tournaments cuz there is no prizepools etc)

And thats actually the difference between them and me.

What about you? Which side have you choosed? And whats your opinion about this situation? - can you write something constructive about it now when you tried to write something constructive about me?

Your reply is kind of all over the place so I'll disregard the parts that don't seem relevant. I read all of your messages in the thread before posting my first response to you. It's true that you gave your opinion. You always give your opinion, so that's definitely not in question. My gripe is with the way you go about it. Going on a decade and a half now I've seen you serve your opinions as a condiment to go with the main dish of trolling the conversation. That tends to leave a bad taste in some people's mouths. To be fair, maybe you really do care about the community. The way it comes across though is that you care much more about provoking people into arguing with you so that you can reply with more of the same.

As for my take on the actual topic, I'm kind of conflicted but leaning more toward thinking the implementation is unfair. I applaud SportsGamer for taking steps to build up the brand with increased visibility via prominent advertising, increased prize pools, celebrity guests on streams, etc. I see all that as part of the same overarching strategy where the Elite and FCL game broadcasts got more polished and professional, and I see these increased license fees as perhaps a necessary move that plays into all that. At the same time, the deal just got a whole lot worse for anyone below the Elite level, and it gets worse the lower you go in the divisions. I can well understand the confusion and frustration especially of a Core or Lite player who has to pay more for participation without feeling like they're getting more in return.

    WATCH OUT EVERYONE!

THE FACEPALM KNIGHTS @Frans-Finand @wade(wadepaananenenenene - wrong tag, can't delete it) is here!

First of their Name, Queens of the Andals and the First Men, Protector of the Sportsgamer

Man. As a fellow old-timer, I'm glad to have you around to this day. In fact, I consider you a kind of scene legend. I mean, you were trolling these conversations literally before some of the players today were even born.

At the same time, I can't help but wonder. Over all these years, I don't remember seeing you make one comment where you didn't try to get a rise out of people. You've made a lot of comments and I'm sure some of your more constructive messages are just slipping my mind right now, but that's only because they're drowned out by the overwhelming barrage of confrontational posts.

It's just strange to me that you would bother keeping that up year in, year out. I am aware that unlike me, you actually have a life, which just makes it all the more baffling.

  6. It must be very challenging to reconcile all these various factors that go into decisions like these when you're transitioning from a four-tier system into a five-tier one. That said, I think there is a lesson for the staff (who I understand to be dedicated, passionate, and working hard to give us all the best ECL experience possible) to be learned from these announcements. They have been well-written so I'm not criticizing that, but they have included so much to take in that it can get confusing. The puzzle is so large that putting it together without missing any pieces can be difficult. The staff obviously knows all that stuff before the announcements, and presenting it in an easily digestible manner to the rest of us is something that I feel could be improved.

It is tricky for sure, but I think a potential approach would be to prioritize the most pertinent information, perhaps even making separate announcements published some time apart, and to more strongly differentiate the various bits of information via logical categorization. This would help people build a coherent overview of the changes in their minds. Realistically, long detailed explanations will not engage most people's steadfast attention. This leads to some of the evident confusion and misunderstanding where some things come as a surprise to some people despite having already been presented.

After all that I will add that my message mainly concerns the vast announcement during ECL 11 as this new one on its own is quite effective.

  7. These are welcome changes as far as I'm concerned. The skill gap in Lite has been excessive based on results and the level of some of the Lite teams I've faced in regular EASHL with my team. There are a number of teams down there that would have done fine in Pro this season, and then there are others that are nowhere near that level. Also, making it easier for competitive Lite teams to climb up and more difficult for struggling Pro teams to stay there seems good to me.

I do agree that such a big change during the season feels a bit abrupt. To enter a season knowing full well what's at stake is rather different to playing this far into it and then being informed that those stakes have been altered and now your team needs to adapt to the new scenario. I guess I should have just kept my eyes open though since this was made known from the outset, as Kenu pointed out.

  8. Regardless of this debate, I feel like there is huge untapped potential in the Swedish pool of console hockey fans. It would be healthy for the competition at the top to expand. We have some fantastic Swedish players as it is, but the elite playership is more Finn-heavy than I imagine it would be if we got more Swedes to notice the competitive scene. I know hockey is up against football in Sweden and football is more popular, but I'm not sure the current situation is an accurate reflection of the ratio between Swedish and Finnish virtual hockey players. I don't have the numbers to back up this hunch, though. Maybe I'm wrong and playing these games is truly an overwhelmingly Finnish phenomenon.

I have no idea which way the high number of Finns in the eSHL will take the league's popularity in Sweden. @keranee said that around 70% of players in the league are still Swedish. That doesn't sound too bad.

  9. The influx of Finnish players was a given at the outset where, based on the description in the original announcement, this league will apparently have the most professional setting we've seen yet in competitive EASHL. Many players will naturally be drawn to that.

I imagine SHL at the very least had a say in the rules for this league? I suppose they didn't request a restriction on the number of non-Swedish players.

  10. Yeah, this guy is really really good. He's also surprisingly good as a forward. That surprised me as I wasn't aware that he had actually played forward before, and most full-time goalies tend not to be that good on F or D as their focus is obviously in playing goalie.

  11. This is a monumental decision. In one of those "damned if they do, damned if they don't" situations for the admins, I think they came through for the good of the community in the long run.

Teams and individual players need to plan their schedule around these games more if they are to participate. Some of them will never do that if they can fall back on extending deadlines whenever it's convenient for them. Consider any organized tournament of note in any other game. You can't take a rain check on your participation if you've already signed up. Either you get in the games when they start, or you get out. The default leeway for scheduling in the ECL is generous enough. If you can't work with that it's time to look in the mirror.

And really, it does come down to planning ahead. There are people playing these leagues with plenty of obligations between work and family who still have a clean record in adhering to deadlines. With several days for rescheduling around the preset time, the fact that it can be done is proven by many over each of these long seasons. Sure, a team may encounter obstacles they had no possible way of planning for despite the backup players and the time given for rescheduling. That is highly unlikely but certainly possible. Even then, the rules need to be a constant which all teams can rely on, and walkover wins against a team with such exceptionally bad luck are offset by the vast majority of these cases in which the team could've done something differently.

SKY are obviously one of the consistently best teams in the ECL. Their performance in the first round against DYN was possibly the most dominant between two top teams that I've seen, and they more than deserved to continue fighting for a place in the finals. No one in their right mind wants to see the semifinals decided this way.

However, the league schedule needs to mean something. It needs to be worked with and not against. Ultimately, that is the clearest and fairest way for everyone involved, and that is why this needed to happen. League Admins, I applaud you.

  12. That guy is a virtual hockey legend! He was once so dominating on the Xbox 360 that most people considered him the best player in the Xbox EHL scene. Maybe current-gen EASHL doesn't lend itself to such individual superiority, maybe the influx of young ECL stars has overshadowed floorbandy king, or maybe he just isn't the player he used to be? Or maybe I have it wrong and he's as good as ever, if not better. It's just that he's not been nearly as prominent as he was back in the day.

One thing is for sure: he was the king of Xbox EHL with a consistently superior level of play, and there's no possible way all that skill might have disappeared. Maybe it all comes down to the changed role you point to in this article. Whatever the case may be, whatever the reason he is now a hidden gem, as a former Xbox 360 player myself it's great to see floorbandy king still going and playing for the highest distinction in the ECL.

This type of structure does very well in many formats, but entertainment usually don't tell the consumer what's coming up, simply because of the fact that one don't want to give away the element of surprise. I do believe a more spontaneous format is something that could help with the personality of the podcast in this case since the hosts already seem pretty structured in their natural state of mind. Makes for a good mix. We also already have the context before starting a new episode since the podcast solely focuses on ECL-talk, so we already know what we have to expect so no need for a lengthy introduction.

I would like you to get a bit more personal tho, since your not doing a podcast about science or history. You are doing a podcast where the only thing that matters is your opinion about things - so speak up! Be spontaneous, humorous or even harsh if necessary. Also, I don't think there is no need for the intro where you structure what the whole podcast should be about. Gives the podcast that "cooperate feel" you want to avoid.

I agree on your former point but partially disagree on the latter. While the overview at the beginning is not absolutely necessary, it prepares the listener with a sense of structure that helps follow the podcast. That same principle is used in various media and is certainly not exclusive to formal contexts. Very often such a structuring introduction will be more subtle, though, and perhaps ECL Talk could learn from that to alleviate the sort of frigidity that I believe you're referring to. On the whole, I think the guys are keeping things pretty natural with a decent balance between form and the digressions of spontaneous banter.
