EDIT: @Juizki you do know about the quick menu that you can bring up by holding down on the PS button, right?

Yes, I know, but it's very limited. If you want to actually browse something out of that menu you have to go into this full screen menu window to actually do something. Please correct me if my memories of 360 are wrong, but how I remember that system is that you could do these things in menus (parties, messaging, notification settings etc), without having to go to full screen menu/dashboard to do something more meaningful than just turn off your console.

EDIT: To everyone who's not familiar with Xbox 360 or doesn't understand/remember what I'm trying to say here, in the video below you can see a player scrolling through a menu and still be conscious on what's happening in the game. Really hoping we'll get something like this for the next-gen consoles. In case the video starts from the beginning, the part I'm talking about is at 17:30.

  2. Forgot to post this here, but this may be something you'd be interested in:

Let's remember this doesn't mean anything as long as we've got no information on PS5's operating system and such, so this video doesn't tilt anything into Xbox's or PS5's favor. Anyhow, things like switching between games in a matter of seconds (8.10 onwards on the video) is something that's such an Xbox thing to do, and unfortunately the kind of creativity I don't feel like we've seen from Sony in terms of making the system in itself as user friendly as possible. You can also see how the navigation menu pops up on the side which seem to include parties, friends and settings, with the gameplay slightly visible meanwhile in the menus. Again something I loved on Xbox 360, as you could do quick things in the menus during a game, such as changing notification settings or joining a party, because you weren't forced into this blue abyss in which you can't tell whether the match is still on intermission or the puck's already been dropped. Small things can make a huge difference throughout the console's 5-10 year lifespan.

Let's hope Sony will come up with a great console and we'll be able to choose from two great consoles, in which case I wouldn't care which console the community would continue.

  3. Voted for Xbox Series X as it's way superior console as of right now, anyhow my final decision will be based on what the final products will look like in terms of hardware and on which console this scene is headed to. If Xbox is going to blow PS5 out of the water the way it seems as of right now, I might get Series X and then buy PS5 in addition if ECL is played of PS5.

Kinda funny how Sony decided to go with way worse hardware and now it seems like they've even got some huge problems in terms of cooling, apparently :D Also, the recent PSN problems, party lag and the overall not so amazing interface on PS4 doesn't really raise my hopes for PS5. But hey, I may be pleasantly surprised if Sony comes out with no-party lag, interface which doesn't completely overlap with the games and they can finally get their game together with the PSN.

Can you please tell me. Why are you guys sooooo afraid of losing those single points every now and then? It is not the end of the world. And because game really is only 12 minutes long, it is "easy" to play that delaying game. Do we really want to courage teams to do it this much that we give them half points of what team would get from 10-0 win?

I also think that difference could be huge. And from viewer(customer???) point os view, i don`t think that would be a bad thing. And if we want to take this sport to a more "serious" direction, we should watch things more from viewers point of view.

E: And i took a quick look. There is also elite players who have voted for European point counting system. So i would not be so sure what would the result of vote be, if elite captains would vote for this.

What @PleeMaker said. Also, if you take a look at @KepakkoFIN's list it also opens up a debate on how and why certain teams go to OT and why some of those teams win majority of their overtimes meanwhile others lose. I hadn't thought about Checkmate's potential 3-points system record, but looking at that list we'd truly be in a horrible spot right now, only because we couldn't smash the puck into the net before OT. Yet we've come through 7 times out of 9 when the next goal decides the game. I have an explanation of my own for the reason why, it's up to you to figure out what's your opinion on it.

    Quote

You don`t get nothing of winning regular season. But i get it if price money is only motivation to play and your team is among those 2-3 teams that can win with this system.

As long as we're talking about winning regular season, only the top teams matter because they are the only ones competing for that regular season win. And if you say it doesn't matter, you might want to take a look at the prize pool in Elite, especially the difference in cash between finals runner-up and semifinals losers, and think would you rather face seed 4 or seed 2-3 in the second round. Assuming that the odds on favorites win their first round series.

Thanks for your post! Maybe i am just too tired, but i just don`t get it... what would make this underdog team want that one OT point more on 3-2-1-0 system than 2-1-0 system? I would think that underdog has more reasons to try to fight from that single point on 2-1-0 system, because on this system single point is relatively more valuable.

I assume you mean the "stealing singular points" part? I don't mean underdogs would be stealing points as in gaining that 1 point for going to OT, but that they'd steal points from the odds on favorite teams' point totals (the better team would lose 1 point just because they got dragged to OT). Imagine one of the top elite teams, for example, who have to face these "park the bus" plays on quite a regular basis and how much it would affect their point totals during one season. Of course this applies to every team that's better on paper than their opponents, but it would hit most dramatically on the best ones.

  6. With the game being as uncompetitive as it is, and having matches where even the most lopsided matches can be taken to overtime on such a regular basis, we should never have a 3-2-1-0 point system. Otherwise we'd have bunch of underdog teams stealing singular points from the top teams just by placing a bus in front of their net through out regulation and going for harpoon attacks. It could also result into a situation in which the better teams would have to go for all out attack to secure full 3 points after playing a very frustrating even game, just to get downed to 0 points due to last minute bounces and other cheesy plays.

If we want to encourage teams to be active and play as aggressively through out the game as they would in the first period, we'd have to consider 2-0 point system in which the winner gets 2 points and loser gets 0 despite whether the game is decided in regulation or OT. Anyhow, there would be certain faults with this system as well.

Can i ask, how would you evaluate who should start in Lite/Pro/Elite?

Wasn't this like the whole point of my previous post? Basically there is no fool proof way to determine in which division each team should begin. Therefore it'd be great not to have too many divisions as it can be a real route of suffering for those who are new but good, or have developed a lot during the off-season.

Yes. Expanding PRO to 48 teams and keeping ELITE and LITE as they are now would be my way to go about it aswell.

This could work. I think we should also increase the amount of teams being relegated to Lite and promoted to Pro, no matter if we extend the Pro division or not. This way we wouldn't have Pro level teams being stuck in Lite because there are too many of them competing against each other.

Especially by extending Pro to 48 we could even do something as radical as promoting and relegating 12 teams in a season, which is 1/4 of the division, just like 4/16 in Elite. You could have 1 or 2 teams with least points being relegated automatically, then let the rest play a 7 game series for the promotion/relegation. That way we would know for sure who belongs to Pro and who doesn't. This way we could also throw all the new teams into Lite (if we want to implement a rule like that) and they would get promoted for sure after their first season if they are top-Pro/Elite -caliber.

  9. I think it's better to divide lite in multiple groups rather than make more divisions, unless we'll found some absolutely fool proof way of deciding into which division each new team should go to.

I think not getting from lite to elite fast enough is a valid argument. Not saying it should be fast and easy, but it should be difficult only for the right reasons. Having to be good enough and practicing, for example. It shouldn't feel difficult just because it's slow. @iSvamp used Vesa Pompa as an example: they were placed into lite despite being way too much of an overkill for that division, just like Oton Letkutemppu.

It is frustrating as fuck having to play against teams that don't stand a chance against you, unless they get extremely lucky. There is nothing competitive, developing or exciting going into the games knowing it's one of those nights you just have to get over with and there's nothing for you to win, just to lose. It's something you see in pro as well, now imagine going through three divisions like that before getting to elite. And if you fail in just one playoff series, as teams underperform and get seeded lower than they should, you'll repeat that same division all over again.

  10. I really like the three division system. After all, it's great that players in lowest division get to play long playoffs, and the ones who don't qualify have the time to practice their game during their off-season. I don't see people being really into a system where they play long regular season just to realize they don't quite cut it as a playoff team. On the opposite, it's not that rewarding for the top lite teams either to dominate during a long regular season and then get downed in round 1 or 2: that's what makes pro so unappealing as well.

I think it's because of older NHL games, where you had to smash left stick to hustle, that people are still pressing LS too much. Whereas in racing they put "pedal to the metal", in this scene players put "that stick through the plastic".

  12. I still remember how, back in NHL 11/12, I was playing some not so serious EASHL with a group of friends and we ended up playing against this team called Northern Stars. Needless to say we got blown out of the water, and being stupid enough we went after some more. But it's still a sweet memory of how a group of friends tried to match up with NOS and finally, when we lost by just one goal, it felt like winning a championship.

I thought how cool it'd be to be part of Northern Stars, and that thought has been there until this day. Unfortunately that never happened, but thankfully I've had the privilege to square off against NOS with teams that can compete against them and, even more, had the chance to follow your journey for the most part. I've seen great teams in the EHL and ECL scene, but I don't think there's ever been another dynasty like Northern Stars were back in the day.

Thank you for writing e-hockey history, and all the best for your future endeavors!

  13. My feedback considers 6v6 only:

    -Spectator mode.

-No automatic animations where players get stuck into animation.

-Reward goalies more for good positioning, punish them more for bad positioning.

-Fix the goalie movement in the butterfly stance. After that goalies should be required to stand up while the puck is far away from the net and stay in the butterfly stance when the puck is nearby.

-Consider forcing goalies to react to shots by going into butterfly, if it's possible with the latency of online gaming. Especially in early stages of the NHL 19 goalies shut the five hole way faster with automatic save animations than by hitting R2, which made using R2 completely pointless as you got beat more while trying to react to the shot rather than just letting the game handle the save by itself.

-Keep the deflections somewhat as they are: force goalie to challenge the shot to make saves on high percentage, punish them hard for sitting inside the net when the shot is coming from far out.

-Deflections should be possible only for players who are either standing still of very slowly gliding by. Right now it's ridiculous how skaters can move 100 mp/h and still make deflections. The slower the player moves the higher the chance of deflecting the puck should be. Maybe even making deflections manual would be a good choice.

-Remove the auto covers and sweeps from the goalie once and for all, only the certain covers and sweeps should be automatic (just like the ones that are automatic nowadays). Autocovers were ridiculous for half a year when goalies intercepted passes with covers etc. Goalies are also playing the game, not flying on an autopilot.

-Stick lift and stick checking should be more balanced and require the defensive player to actually be able to reach the stick or puck. Stick lifts should be effective but lifting the stick through the body of an opponent shouldn't be possible.

-Pucks should move towards the direction players aims to, not the direction games decides it to go. Right now there are tons of shots that are, for example, aimed to top left corner but go through the five hole of the goalie. Also shooting the puck wide should happen more when the player isn't facing the net in a proper way, and happen less when the player is.

Just to show something related to the movement of the goalies. Check out the video below and imagine if Jonathan Quick had to move the same way goalies on the NHL 19 do: moving around in the butterfly stance, having to move at least 1/3 of the width of the net at a time, as it's not possible to move less. Also the real goalies' movement from the stand-up to butterfly and back up is extremely fluent and fast.

Few timestamps you might want to check out: 2.43, 3.45, 6.07

Edit: I also have to note the game shouldn't try to be too realistic or too close to real hockey, as it may not be the best possible thing for a competitive e-sports game. I'm just trying to note that the movement of the goalies could be way smoother and transitions more fluent than what they are now - but then the requirements for the goalies to make saves should also be higher (positioning wise etc).

  14. ECL and ECL Elite Champions

-This list contains only players who have won ECL championship (before the division system) and players who have won ECL Elite championship, and those players' additional achievements in the NHLGamer scene. Pro and Lite are left out as of right now due to it being unnecessarily difficult to track all three divisions and update their information manually.

-The list has been sorted by the following principles: amount of ECL/Elite championships won, amount of "additional" championships won (eSM over Pro), date won (from newest to oldest), player name (alphabetical order)

-Note: The information on this list has been composed by listing names represented on championship teams' rosters. For example, debi_85 and Patzlaf are not listed on the roster of Mukimiehet (ECL season 2), despite them being part of the team and playing in the playoffs. Please, let me know if some of the information is incorrect or if there are players missing from this list.

Now with the Summer Cup being finished on my part, I should be around quite a lot for potential try-outs.

I'm a goalie looking for an elite club (or high contender in pro) + a team for eSM as well. Willing to play as a starter, a backup or share games about 50-50 with another goalie (with the better one playing the potential playoff games). Been around for quite a while now, and I've had a privilege to be part of great teams such as Finnish Roosters, Checkmate, Northern Ascendancy and Evolution. I can speak fluent Finnish and English. Will most likely be very active on NHL 19!

My biggest motivator to play this game series? Winning! Obviously ;)

You can contact me on NHLGamer or on PSN (PSN ID: Juizki).

Still available. I'll be around a lot during the beta, looking forward to play as many games as possible.
