NHL 19 Tuner Rollback (Limited duration)

    NHL_19_Tuner_Rollback.jpg

    Hey NHLGamers,

As you've probably heard by now, EA will be having a tuner rollback to the Beta Tuner for a limited duration of time. That rollback has now gone live and will take place between Friday, January 18th (11:00 CET) and Friday, January 25th (11:00 CET). EA is also issuing a tuner feedback survey for the duration of the rollback, you will find a link in-game and on Twitter.

Please see EA's previous announcement and the full 'changelog' below:

    Quote

    Hey everyone,

Before the holidays begin, we just wanted to provide everyone with an update around NHL 19, and more specifically the feedback we have been hearing around the gameplay.

Over the past few months, we have been seeing a lot of people on all channels asking for us to revert to Beta tuners as they enjoyed the game better during that time frame. While we believe that the current gameplay has a lot of improvements from launch, we also recognize that there could be areas of gameplay that you preferred better in the past.

As a result, in mid-January we are going to be rolling back to the Beta Tuner for a limited time to get your feedback on what you like/dislike about the Beta Tuner compared to the current gameplay tuner. Please note that this will undo some of the positive changes that we’ve seen from the community, so you’ll be seeing some of the following occur again:

    • Poke checks will be more sensitive and cause more tripping penalties
    • AI goaltending performance will be different
    • The ability to drop your stick
    • Increase in incidental contact strength (bumps)
    • Decrease in penalties from stick lifts

After we change back from the tuner, we will be posting a feedback survey to gather your thoughts, likes, and dislikes on the Beta tuner.

While it is a little while until the tuner goes live, we wanted to provide you with an update as we know how passionate you are about the product. Once we get closer to the date of the tuner, we will provide an update with more information and details on what is happening, when it’s happening, and what you can expect.

Thank you for your dedication and feedback throughout NHL 19 and we hope everyone has a happy holidays!

    - The EA SPORTS NHL Team

So, what do you guys think about the rollback? It surely brings some spice to the ongoing season, where the game will have a completely different feel for the coming week. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section!

Is it really true that the skating didn't change after tuners? I remember bigger builds were able to move really quickly and spin around like figure skaters 🙄. Maybe I just got used to it.

After three games of 3s. These are not beta tuners :D

I really didnt see a difference between game play today and last week... Except that now  every game felt a bit laggy.  And maybe opponent took few more penalties with poke check than before.

Maybe it would be easier to see difference in 6vs6.

Agree 100%, L2 only feels slower too (judging from versus)

Yeah, I guess the L2 nerf was in a patch rather than a tuner, which only further proves "EA's point" that the beta tuner is shit

Pretty sure it was not a tuner that changed this and it was a patch that made less agile players have harder time turning and backskating as well. Very good change in my opinion or everyone would be playing with 2m power forwards.

The poke check is no where near what it was with the beta tuners. I couldn't find anything regarding the poke check in the patch notes, so it has to be tuner based, right?

It's a good thing, though, as the poke check penalties were fucking ridiculous in the beta.

I actually like this update after playing for some hours. Player feels more 'smooth' and it's easier to play offensive hockey

6vs6 was totally different no laggy at all. Skating and game play felt very smooth and reactive... i dont know why, but it sure was fun to play. You can use X a lot without worrying of possible penalties, at least when you area close to opponent.  I am not sure yet how will this effect, but i am sure it is not just a bad thing.

What was checking like? I think i didnt have many attempts last night, but it seemed a bit harder? If i remember it right it was efficient check in beta.

To me the most noticeable change was incidental puck contact. The puck was bouncing around everywhere all the time. I'm not saying it''s a bad thing, just a major difference.

I was spamming stick-lifts everywhere and actually managed to get one hooking penalty. Sure, it has its downsides, but positives also. One doesn't need to just stand on a passing lane and hope EA's Random Number Generator rolls for a pass interception, but instead it's possible to play more active defense and lift the stick of the player about to receive the pass. I like that.

Checking felt harder to me as well. Whether it has more to do with checking or skating mechanics, I don't know.  Loose puck dekes are difficult to pull off with a player that has relatively low deking attributes.

It's a good thing, though, as the poke check penalties were fucking ridiculous in the beta.

This is from the beta-to-release (Day 0) patch notes:

    Poke Checking

    • Fixed cases where poke checks were tripping a player after getting puck first
    • Fixes to accuracy of poke checks on stationary/slow moving loose pucks
    • Fixed a case where players were not being tripped after consecutive pokes
    • Various additional poke check targeting fixes

There were changes to the pokes in the tuners too, though:

September 1, 2018 – Tuner 1.00 Updates from Beta to Final

    • Tuning for tripping based around positioning, player speed and collision

    September 19th @ 2am PST - Tuner 1.01

    • Poke checks now need to get a slightly larger piece of the player to cause them to trip
    • Increase to pokecheck accuracy when poking to ideal angles

Wow, played a couple of hours of 6v6 yesterday and had plenty more fun than I have had in the previous months. It's actually possible to forecheck again and the game feels way more fluent and responsive somehow. My player actually executed the actions I wanted him to. 😂

If EA could just remove the stick dropping and nerf the stick lifts the game would be so enjoyable. IMO.

First time in a long time i'm able to skate, pass and hit properly. Same seems to be the case for my teammates. Start of ECL8 Lite has been horrendous for us, getting beat by everyone. After tuner change we have won pro teams and even kept numbers respectable against Fila. Atleast for us difference is huge with this tuner change.😁

Yeah I can join others with this. Game seems much more fluent and players lose the puck when they should. Only thing I would change now is the stick lift. Yesterday I was clearly behind a player on a breakaway and managed to lift his stick without a penalty. Soon it would become that sticklift spam when players realize its the best choice.

I'm not sure if tuner should make impact of this magnitude. When considering they did not change that much if we take EAs word.

But now for 2 days game has been smooth and fast. Like connection is 100x better than 1.03. All clunkiness and delays are gone, passes go where i want etc....

This just goes to show that EA and this new Game Changers program have no idea what they are doing with their game. 5 months of development out the window, as if feedback from previous months had nothing to work with. Unbelievable.

But hey, as long as the they can milk the cash cow (hut) it's all good...

The Game Changers program itself isn't new, but if you're referring to the fact that currently both Game Changers that have daily contact with the dev team and provide feedback and content creators (that are not) are both branded as Game Changers - I agree they should not be called the same. I mean no offence by this to anyone, but it's simply confusing to those that are not in the program.

I'm of course in a biased position, being a Game Changer (the first mentioned version), but I couldn't disagree more about the Game Changers (nor the developers) being clueless. Lots of people with different areas of expertise are giving both broad and detailed honest feedback on a daily basis.

I agree this tuner is not what our NHLGamer community asked for, but sadly a big chunk of the critiques of the game have been spamming "bring back the beta tuner" and the studio decided to do that for a week to get the feedback. Let's face it - had they brought back only parts of the tuner, the same people would be complaining how "this is not the beta tuner". And thus here we are with the good and the bad parts of it. (These are my own observations and not some internal information)

Be sure to fill out this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FZMVS62

However, note that you can only do it once - so best to wait until you have played enough to give your thorough opinion.

    This i get.

But what did they do with the original beta feedback then, if they now go back to it just to get feedback from 6 months old tuner? 🤔

I truly get your point, but here's my take on the issue:

They made changes that a lot of loud people thought were the wrong changes. Also, that feedback was given with no previous experience of the game and while people didn't yet know how to play the new game, so the opponents were also not playing the same way as they are today and thus you might have fond memories of beating everyone 10-0 when nobody could play defence. Hence you can't really go purely on the old feedback if the consensus is that you made the wrong changes based on the old feedback and that's why we are painfully reminded about some of the negative aspects of the old tuner today.
