Hi everyone,

First of all, I want to apologize for the lack of communication on our side regarding the progress of the website and the league format. I have been extremely busy in my personal life and that has impacted my ability to spend as much time with the website as much as I would have liked to. Samuli (@Lurkins) has been very busy as well and as a result we were unable to open up the website for your testing as quickly as we wanted to. I hope  you can forgive us for this and continue to believe in us and NHL Gamer as much as we do.

Moving on to updating you on our progress:

Let's start with some great news: Samuli was able to locate our the problem we were having with the login functionality on our tournament website for a long time and getting that up and running has relieved us our biggest concerns and it allows us to move on to polishing the other aspects of the website.

Let's get some key information out there. We will discuss this further during the coming days, in order to keep this post brief.

We have decided to start the league with 60 teams, divided into 4 groups. Since this is the first league, we suggest that the teams in the groups are simply randomized. Each group will have 15 teams and every team inside a group plays each other twice (once at home, once away). 8 out of 15 teams in each group go to the playoffs, totaling 32 playoff teams. Playoffs will be best-of-seven.

The teams that are left out of the regular playoffs would play another type of playoffs for positions in the 2nd season. We can get into this more in a future blog post, but I have been in touch with @Billy44205 about his division concept and I personally think this is an interesting concept that is worth looking at. Unfortunately I don't have my notes with me at this time, so I will have to touch on the details in the next blog post. As all who read Billy's post about his vision, you know that it's a bit of information to chew.

In order for us to make sure that everyone finds the new site satisfying from the get-go, we have decided to open the site next week, on Friday the 4th of December. We want to give the teams roughly a week to get accustomed to the new site and enough time to add all of their team members. Thus we suggest that the league starts on the 14th of December. If the majority of teams feel like this is too late, we can agree to give teams less time to prepare their roster and look for an earlier date to get things going.

Please let us know in the poll and comments section how you feel about our suggested time-frame and ask any other questions that you might want answered.

On behalf of the NHL Gamer staff,

Kenneth

Both ways should work just fine. It doesn't matter if you are not in the top20 monthly as long as there is some seeding before teams will be randomized. Every team starts still from the same line, but this way there won't be all top15 teams in one group (A) and that way teams 9-15 would be out of playoffs as they might have been able to be #1-2 in other groups (B, C or D). What I'm trying to say, is that I prefer any kind of seeding before groups are made, as long as groups are still equal in the first tournament.

I would also like to play few more games before x-mas, but it is you who knows it best how we should do it. If you feel like you aren't ready with the site before 14th, it's ok to for me to wait. I rather play the games when everything is completely ready than rush. We all should be thankful for you guys, that we will even be having this site.

Hmm.. guest posts should be disabled. Interesting. :)

Anyways, I guess partial seeding could be done. Not all teams have played enough games (especially 6vs6) to be able to be measured. But sure, we could consider putting the known top-teams in different groups. Keep the suggestions coming.

yeah that was me, I was used to be automatically logged in in and when I already had done the post I couldnt change it.

Would anyone be interested in compiling a list of the TOP 20 teams that should be seeded evenly, in order to minimize the risk of "groups of death"?

Please do so publicly, for example by writing your findings in this thread with references to why you chose this order.

Thank you!

@gzell60: To be honest, I don't care as long as people are happy. :)

I would be happy to randomize all, but if we have a fair way to say which teams should be seeded separately, I'm happy to do so.

What ever sort of TOP-list someone would like to compile for this purpose - I'm happy to look at!

And then what? How will you assess the quality of the lists you may receive? How will you justify using them in any way? I know it doesn't matter for this topic as seeding accuracy really doesn't matter much, but in principle I am against trusting people with personal judgment calls. They are all the less trustworthy now as a good third of the PS4 community was not on Playstation before this year.

Just randomize for the first touney, thats it

If you want to have a few teams leave the tournament early on, then that is certainly a very good idea.

I will compile my own list later.

Why? Can you accurately explain to me why that would happen?

Past EHL tournaments on Consolehockey had a history of teams not finishing their games because they were hopelessly inferior to most of the other participants. Now when I take a look at the list of registered teams, I see quite a few names I have never heard or played before. It should be everyone's desire to create a tournament where newcomers can actually compete, because we will need them to keep a community like NHLGamer going. We have seen the demise of Consolehockey, and they failed at keeping known teams and gaining interest of new teams out there. I really want this website to expand to something more 'stable' than that.

@gzell60 In the first tournament there will always be top teams that will wreck bottom teams in group stage, no matter what seeding you come up with. Without divisions it's just a cold hard fact.

I am well aware of CH tournaments and not to give anything away because I don't even know what Kenu and the boyzzz will ultimately implement, but measures will certainly be taken in tournament design to mitigate the "bad team quitting" phenomenon, with divisions obviously in the future but even in this tournament. My take is seeding is an extra layer of sugar on top of the icing on the cake that is ECL.

I tried to take a more analytical approach like @tokFan earlier and took screenshots of the OVERALL 6vs6 LEADERBOARDS as of December 2nd, 4:17 p.m. GMT +1.

I created an Excel sheet with 38 teams which are in the Top 100 EA leaderboards and registered for this tournament. What I did then was create a Points per game average for all of these teams. I attached the file below.

Top 20 results (only >100 games played):

MZ4EM7x.png

Top 20 results (all games):

IX0YK9e.png

Not sure if we should count teams with ~40 or ~60 games due to easier opponents in lower divisions, but that's up to @Kenu I guess.

Let me know what you think about this!

Very happy with the activity here guys - great work! Please keep the discussion going and comment on the different lists that the guys have put great efforts into making!
