With the ECL 11 Elite Finals being just around the corner, we thought who better to contact for some insight than ECL 11 cover gamer and HAVU Gaming captain Tuukka @FlyerKungen Kuha - he knows both FILADELPHIA and hREDS almost as well as his own team. Usually the man can be seen on the ice in the finals, but due to a stinging loss against hREDS in the finals, it is not the year for HAVU Gaming this time. Despite the disappointment, FlyerKungen is in great spirits and expects a lot from the upcoming weekend:

What do you think the situation is like for these teams heading into the finals?
"FILADELPHIA will be eager to get back what's theirs after the letdown and coming just short of a reverse sweep against us back in ECL 10. On the other hand, I feel like hREDS can enter the finals with a lot less pressure. In my opinion FILADELPHIA is the favorite and definitely has a lot more to lose but ultimately none of that matters out on the ice, both teams will do everything in their power to win and neither one wants to be the one left in second place."

What kind of hockey are you expecting to see out of the two?
"I'm sure we'll be seeing fast, entertaining skill hockey, just as in the previous ECL Elite Finals, so you won't want to miss out! It's definitely refreshing to have some new blood in the finals for once. FILADELPHIA will be leaning on their experience and strategies that have worked for them in the past - the centerman and defenders have a big role and the team knows how to utilize every player on the ice with the chemistry that they've built. I'm sure they'll be minimizing risk and stay in possession which might lead to frustration on the hREDS side. I think FILADELPHIA also utilizes their defensemen on the blueline in a better way, which has proven to be crucial in long playoff series before if they can play true to their level and avoid mistakes as best they can. "

How about hREDS, do you think they'll be able to challenge?
"hREDS is a team that relies way more on being able to beat the opponent with pure skill. They're easily the most individually skilled team in the league, but their style of play is widely known and not the most versatile. Then again, if they stick to their guns and are able to perform even against the best, they've always got the chance to win. I personally hope that the semifinal victory against us will propel hREDS with great momentum to be able to challenge a team as strong as FILADELPHIA. These are the moments you really cherish as a player and with that I wish good luck to both teams - we're hoping for a long, tightly contested series!"

After yet another intense stretch of ECL Elite level virtual hockey, we've arrived at the end station. With only one series and a maximum of seven games left in the season, it's only right to take a closer look at how these teams have managed to pave their way into the finals. 

At the start of the season, we ranked hREDS as our prediction to win it all, whereas FILADELPHIA were found at the #2 spot in our season preview. It was of course highly expected to see a rematch of FILADELPHIA vs HAVU in yet another final series, but it is a welcome breath of fresh air that hREDS and their tremendous success this season brings to the table. The two finalists have both made the long trek to this point of the season, but their journeys have been oh so different.

From the get-go, there was not a doubt in the world that FILADELPHIA wouldn't have what it takes to make another finals appearance and despite having their only few hiccups to start the season, the juggernauts went on to break several records that are set to stand the test of time in the ECL as we know it. We know that FILADELPHIA is an extraordinary team not simply due to their skill in every aspect of the game, but due to their tight knit group and the experience they have built as a team - a factor that can give them the edge in any given series. When facing such a team, it's not only about stopping their top scorer, who happens to be @Eki at the moment, but making it tough for FILA entails completely eliminating your own mistakes and shutting them down as a unit, which is a feat no team has consistently succeeded in this season. Statistically their primary option on attack has been Paul @PleeMaker Arontie, but we know that despite being the most probable shooter, the left winger will also dish the puck given the opportunity proven by his league leading assist total (12) in the playoffs.

With hREDS, we get to an interesting story. The team is rather fresh despite consisting of players that have been at the top for quite some time already and this season was supposed to be their true claim to fame at the Elite level - as it has been. Alike FILADELPHIA, these guys also set records this season, as former forward turned defenseman Tuukka @Tuukka.R Röpelinen scored a total of 16 goals from his RD spot. Then if we're talking about stellar goaltending on FILADELPHIA's side, we can definitely say the same about @FinKonna, who's really came into his own having taken advantage of seeing time as the bona fide starter for the first time since ECL 4 with Limitless. In this hREDS segment we'll also have to talk about @Joukki, who has the hot stick right now as he leads the league in playoff scoring (19 points) and finished a total of nine goals in the seven game series against HAVU Gaming in the semifinals. With that, the hREDS left winger is looking unstoppable at the moment.

Interesting points to follow:

• The goalie battle: both @ICappeI and @FinKonna have been red hot, and what makes it even more interesting is the fact that both of these guys have represented the opposing team in the past, Cappe playing for hREDS back in IS Cup 4 (then Delusion), whereas Konna represented FILADELPHIA for a longer period of time, until Cappe took his place after IS Cup 4 that is. Redemption time?
• It's widely rumored that @Joukki would be leaving hREDS to end the season and what a parting gift it would be to bring home a championship. Seems like the team is in good spirits and Joukki is motivated to make a statement for any future club aspiring to pick him up.
• Throughout history, these teams have been quite evenly matched, although FILADELPHIA has taken an advantage as of late. In the total of 13 bouts between these teams, hREDS are at five victories, whereas FILADELPHIA has amassed eight, out of which two have came in overtime. 
• The defensive ability of Joonas @Patzlaf Paatiala is something else. The FILADELPHIA center currently leads the playoffs in takeaways at an average of 4.33 takeaways per game. Paired with his great faceoff efficiency, this makes for a centerman that can secure puck possession for his team.
   

Prediction: hREDS were one of the two teams that managed to win against FILADELPHIA in the regular season. Granted, a lot of time has passed since but nevertheless it will give the challengers that bit of added confidence knowing that they have been able to overcome FILA in the past. I'm seeing hREDS as the hotter team right now especially coming off their somewhat surprising win against HAVU, and carrying that momentum they will surely be able to snatch a few wins in the finals too. However, FILA is on a completely different level as a team and if they can perform according to their high standards, they will hoist the cup. The series will end at 6 games, FILADELPHIA securing their 3rd ECL Elite title with a 4-2 series win.

For a short look at how both teams have progressed to the finals, we can take a look at the playoff tree below. It's evident that as the number one seed, FILADELPHIA has had slightly more favorable matchups, whereas hREDS have had to battle a bit more. Then again, at this stage of the season no matchup is easy even if a skilled team might make it look that way.

LA Ruling regarding misconduct by team Goosebumps

Those who wait for something good never wait too long, and such is the case with the ECL 11 Neo finals that will be played in their entirety tonight. The two teams that have grinded their way through the ruthless ECL Neo season are Pinaattikone (6) out of group 2 and Goosebumps (10) out of group 3. Both have had a tremendous, long season that will come to an end tonight in either joy or sadness as the entire best of five series goes down starting at 20:00 CET.

After a sensational victory in the finals we witnessed captain @Nieppii lifting the cup over his shoulders as Enigma were crowned as the champions of ECL 11 Pro. Enigma was down in the series 2-1 after gameday one but the team showed real character on Wednesday in gameday two and completed the comeback with a 3-4 series win. The trophy will now join Enigma’s players in the sauna where the team can also leave last season’s disappointments behind and start the preparations for the next season in ECL Elite.

LA have concluded our investigation, finding one infraction – performed multiple times, however. The perpetrator of this infraction was rasite-_- / (aka hapee-_- and community user Leftinkarlssoni) who, over the course of a season, manipulated and doctored the stats of his own team, in order to put himself and his teammate nagneigel in a better light. Furthermore, when confronted with our suspicions that their team had engaged in illegal activities, rasite-_- / Leftinkarlssoni did not immediately come forward and confirm our suspicions, they did however when pressured in a follow-up message by LA. As such, these actions are in breach of rules:

4.2 (Rule circumvention): LAs time is stretched thin at the best of times, therefore if we come to you saying that we have suspicions that your team may have engaged in the breaking of rules, then replying, and playing coy, will be regarded at though you are purposefully obstructing our investigation. We do not exist to simply punish people, and would much rather deal with straightforward cases where people are open with us, as opposed to cases where we have to dedicate hours of our time to collate info on something that could have been finalised in a quick confirmatory opening message.

Furthermore, an allegation was made by JOONAJOHIS that stated that a player from another team had played for GOOSEBUMPS on a second account in some capacity. If this was true, then the player in question would have been found to have broken rule 2.4 (as seen below). That said, we were unable to validate JOONAJOHIS's claim, and as such will not be penalising the player in question. Additionally, JOONAJOHIS has been warned about making jokes of this nature again.

In conclusion, LA has decided to suspend rasite-_- / Leftinkarlssoni for the duration of this ECL season (i.e. the Neo Finals), as well as ECL 12. In addition to this, rasite-_- / Leftinkarlssoni will also receive a captaincy ban for ECL 12, and ECL 13.

We would also like to take a moment to remind players that whilst we do allow the change of PSN account used in-game, it is strongly advised that you flag it up to LA before playing with the account, so that we are fully informed. Furthermore, we would like to reiterate the seriousness of rule 12.3. The accuracy of stats is singularly one of the most integral parts of our platform, and the integrity of the scene itself. As such, breaking this rule is one of the most heinous of infractions that one can commit on NHLGamer, and with it come extremely harsh penalties.

Two months ago we started the ECL 11 Pro season with 32 teams and over 260 players. Along the way we saw great games, beautiful goals and some surprises. In the end it’s fair to say that the favorites didn’t disappoint us this season. GOONS and Enigma are the best two teams of the season and they’ve deserved the spotlight of the ECL 11 Pro finals. One of these teams will win the cup and earn the direct promotion to the ECL Elite. Without further ado let’s take a look at our finalists.

GOONS have had an almost perfect run to the finals. They were the best team in the regular season and in the playoffs the team have crushed their opponents game after game. The team was still without a loss in the playoffs before the semifinal series against ZSC Esports, but the Swiss Lions fought bravely and managed to beat GOONS twice. Despite GOONS being clear winners of the series, ZSC Esports exposed the mortality of their opponents and proved there are some vulnerabilities in GOONS' playing as well. This sends an encouraging message to their final opponents but also helps GOONS to keep their feet grounded.

Enigma had a rough start for the season but they managed to improve the further the competition progressed. Especially the last two series wins against Vaxjo Lakers and Tunnel Vision proved that the team has left all their worries behind and are playing with their full potential. The team has been able to turn really close games to their favor and I like to believe they want to continue the same trend in the finals as well. This is the second time in a row that Enigma is playing in the Pro finals so the experience is on their side. However their opponent won’t get any easier than last time against Black Horse.   
 

NHLGamer decided to contact the captains of both teams for a short interview. Both teams answered the same questions and they haven’t seen their opponents answers:

1. Your team managed to secure the Pro finals spot in an impressive way. What do you think is the key factor behind the success? Were you convinced already at the start of the season that the finals and possible championship are realistic goals for your team? 

Before the season started, when I decided to establish GOONS, our aim was to become one of the top teams in the league and to make it even close to the realistic target we needed to sign top players. I introduced the project to @kriketski17 who became excited and started working on gathering a competitive team for the season. I already knew the potential of @pikkuroger and @viba2008, and Kriketski signed the rest of the players to the team. The last piece in the puzzle was when Kriketsi and his team at that time JYP Jyvaskyla made an agreement of the player himself moving to our team. After adding Kriketsi I personally became certain that it would require a really great team to beat GOONS in a seven game series and since then our only goal has been winning the Pro championship. - @Aitis

I would say the reasons are the same as in the previous season - individual talent, experience and trusting your own doing. Our team spirit is really good and we are constantly looking for ways to improve our game and willing to hear new advice from each other. As last seasons finalists we were hungry for winning the championship this time but we started the season really poorly. However after we decided to sign young prodigy @laitineen64 to our team, things started to work out and we have had a strong belief in our team again. The main goal was to reach the Elite relegation series but of course we are working towards championship and hopefully we will be able to win it. - @Nieppii 

2. What do you think are your biggest strengths in the finals compared to your opponents?

We will just play our own game and enjoy. It should be enough to win the cup. - @viba2008 

Our strength is in teamplay. We have a great chemistry and everything new we plan to do seems to work out. For example in the Tunnel Vision series we managed to win one of the games following a faceoff set play that we were working on in practice mode. Above all we also have strength between the pipes. @Pirtsa89 has been playing very well and he has saved many almost certain goals. - @sannteri 

3. How will the final series end? 

The final series will end 4-1 in GOONS' favor. Enigma has been able to improve their game during the season and the games will be really tight, but GOONS will bring the cup home. - @Aitis

The final series will certainly be tight and small things will make a difference. I would say our sauna is ready for the cup after a 4-2 series win. - @Nieppii 
 

As you can see from the answers, both teams are very confident to see the cup in their own sauna after the finals. Especially GOONS are very certain that they don’t need to change a thing in their playing and that’s something we all can really agree on. Enigma has found the winning patterns during the season which they believe will lead them to become the champions. There is also a little mind games in the answers as Enigma would like to pile the pressure on GOONS side. However they are not settling for underdogs status and have a lot of faith in their changes.     

Interesting points to follow:

• Former JYP Jyvaskyla teammates right winger @kriketski17 and left defender @Makeaxl will go head to head in opposite teams.  
• There are two players from last seasons champions Black Horse. Enigma center @laitineen64 and GOONS defender @Miika. Which of the players will be able to secure the back to back Pro championship?
• GOONS and Enigma played against each other in the regular season. GOONS was able to win both games (3-2 and 2-5) but this happened before Enigma signed their key player @laitineen64.
• Both centermen have pretty similar numbers in faceoff stats (49,7% vs 50,4%) so every faceoff will be decisive. 
• GOONS forwards have over 40% average shooting percentage and they all have scored over 40 points each in the playoffs. Enigma needs to keep these numbers in check if they want to win. 

Prediction: It’s really hard to pick the favorites for the finals especially after Enigma’s great display against Tunnel Vision who plays with quite similar strengths as compared to GOONS. As captain Nieppi said in the interview, the playoff experience is on Enigma’s side but on the other hand inexperience on the GOONS side hasn't shown in any way this season. The series will be extremely tight and the games will end with minimal goal margins. I believe Enigma will benefit from their excellent form and previous seasons experience ultimately lifting the trophy after a game seven win. Enigma will win the series 4-3.    
 

What does the community think? Even though Enigma is now predicted to win the cup, I would still keep the sauna warm in the GOONS camp as well. GOONS has been absolutely outstanding this season but Enigma has once again plowed through adversity to the finals. As always we wish you enjoy the series and cheer for your favorite team. Bjorkloven has advanced with great stability to the finals after a consistent season throughout. They are a very balanced team in all the areas of the game and are currently in good form from having faced their toughest opposition of the season yet in the semifinals. Exerceo is also a very strong team and cannot be underestimated as they have convincingly mowed down opponent after opponent throughout the playoffs. The area that might be crucial and decisive in this final series is goaltending and I'd state that Bjorkloven has a slight advantage in that area. Whereas both teams are able to run a great goalie tandem, @Kallmanius has at times proven to be a wall for his Bjorkloven and has the ability to give the edge needed for his team. Now as the pressure is higher than ever, the team needs that strong backbone and therefore it is beneficial for both squads to have two capable netminders. As stated, minor edge for Bjorkloven in that department. 

Both squads have the offensive firepower to blow each other out of the water if a game starts going that way and despite playoff and high-stakes games usually being low-scoring battles I can see some games in this series being unusually high in scoring too. The first few games should be a feeling out process but after that we can expect the teams to relax a bit and let the play flow. On the other hand, teams of this caliber know how to defend and enforce that shutdown strategy when required so it certainly won't be easy to get those high quality chances. 

Bjorkloven has been dominant throughout the playoffs but were recently put to the test by Hotbox. Exerceo has been equally dominant and haven't yet been in that much trouble, so you could argue they haven't yet been properly tested. The comeback story that Bjorkloven pulled from a 1-2 deficit against Hotbox is a true show of mental strength and awards some points that way too. 

Prediction: Series score 4-2 - Bjorkloven Esports will be the ECL 11 Champion

...and then there were four. After a surprisingly lopsided  group of series in the first round, we're down to the best of the best, which in all honesty weren't that tough to predict this season. FILADELPHIA, HAVU Gaming, hREDS and JYP Jyvaskyla are going to determine who will be the one to hoist the trophy this season in the most prestigious league in virtual hockey. All of these teams are viable options to win it all and we'd certainly feel good about handing the trophy over to any one of these squads - we know they are worthy. Now it's time to really bite down and go for that final push.

FILADELPHIA did as expected and overcame Northern Ascendancy with a rather routine performance in the quarterfinals. The #1 seed didn't display anything out of the ordinary and simply showed up, getting the job done - the kind of stuff you can do when you're one of the best teams around. Statistically, FILADELPHIA outplayed their opponents in each of the five games in the quarterfinals, outshooting NOR by a large margin throughout the series. @ICappeI played a major role by solidifying a series lead with two shutouts to start the series. No changes are expected or needed for that matter in the semifinals. Going up against JYP, FILA will be facing a slightly more skilled and experienced opponent, but if the regular season games are to judge by, they will not meet their match at this stage yet.

I was expecting JYP to be at least slightly fazed going up against Farjestad BK in the quarterfinals, but their disappointment back from ECL 10 didn't show the slightest. Despite the series ending up at 4-2, JYP was in the drivers seat and stayed in control throughout the series. Youngster @Vattu__ took a big step up on his left wing, building on a successful regular season and now leading his team and the entire playoffs in scoring at 8+3=11. Vattu is also displaying next lefel efficiency, burying his chances at over a 50% success rate over the six games played so far. Another interesting factor for JYP is how they are going to play their goalies. Both experienced @Sandr0hh and newcomer Teemu @ITemeI Laukkanen have put forth great performances, but one would imagine their long time netminder Sandro will get the start tonight.

Prediction:
We're going to see two very skilled teams going up against each other and we know that both of them will be able to win games when they get to stay on the puck more. FILADELPHIA is expected to drive most of the play, whereas JYP will be forced to pick their chances a bit more, when having a hot scorer like Vattu on their side might prove to be crucial. JYP will be able to take at least one victory, but I can't see them walking away with the series. FILADELPHIA wins 4-1.

In their quarterfinal bout against Roots Gaming, HAVU managed to take their green rivals down without any sign of trouble. Yes - two of the games were extended to overtime. Yes- the games were tight, but the bottom line here is that HAVU won four straight and winning those tight battles is what it's really about in the playoffs. HAVU managed to stay on the puck for most of the series and while it didn't show on the scoreboard this time, it makes me believe that they are in good form moving forward. If anything, they will need to find some efficiency from other guys outside their top scorer @FlyerKungen as all other players except him and centerman Risto @Dominointi Järvi are still at one goal each in the playoffs.

I was perhaps expecting hREDS to be able to bully Vesa Pompa in the quarterfinals, as the Swedish squad made playoffs somewhat surprisingly in my books still, but that didn't turn out happening. Despite the series score being lopsided, hREDS didn't look as strong as I expected all the time. Some games they managed to dominate from time to time, but their x-factor in the quarterfinals was really goaltender @FinKonna, who is sporting an impressive 87.5 SV% moving on to the semifinals. A high save percentage usually shows that the team has helped out their goaltender well, forcing low danger chances. If hREDS can keep that up while staying dangerous offensively, they are still a team I could see in the finals this season.

Prediction:
This is going to be a tough one, not just because two very closely matched squads are clashing but because I like both of these teams as options moving forward. However, it's a fact that one unbeaten streak in the playoffs will be broken at approximately 21:45 CET tonight and that will set the tone for the rest of the series. For the sake of changing things up I'll pick hREDS to win in 7.

Adam @esdor Ericson a very familiar sight in the virtual hockey scene. In addition to playing, he streams content to Twitch and is an award winning commentator and esports personality.

Esdor was awarded the Svenska Spel Fair Player award to end the SCL tournament some months ago and although he sees that as a great honor, being eliminated from the tournament in the playoffs stings a bit.

"I think I partially got that award since I am so passionate and dedicated when it comes to NHL. I managed to somewhat hide my disappointment after being eliminated in the tournament one day before I did commentary in the playoffs."

As a recipient of such an award and as a public person in the scene, Esdor sees the importance of acting as a role model to his peers and younger players. His actions speak for themselves and the Katrineholm-native has been known to call out wrongdoing or bad behavior on Twitch for example.

"One of the most important things for me is trying to be a good person both online and in real-life interactions. If I see someone behaving bad in a Twitch chat for example I will call that person out. I think our community needs to treat each other better in general. I don't want to see homophobic or racial slurs in our community ever again and I think we need to accept everyone playing this game no matter where they are from or how they look. We could also be better at welcoming women to our community", Esdor continues.
 

His love for sports in general started way back at only three years old, when little Esdor took the ice for the first time picking up bandy in the footsteps of his father, who represented the Swedish junior national team and played at the domestic elite level for a few seasons in his prime. Bandy as a sport stuck with Esdor for much of his youth, until other sports, such as floorball ended up taking up most of his time. Aside from all the other sports, Esdor is passionate about football and has a special place in his heart for Liverpool FC - The Reds, as they're referred to colloquially. While hockey is a dear sport to him too, it's never reached the levels of football and there certainly isn't a club that could be compared to Liverpool in that sport.

"I have been a Liverpool fan since I was a little boy. It might sound boring but I started to support them since my dad cheered for them. Sadly I don't have a similar type of affection to any hockey team. I support Djurgården in Sweden but for me it's much more important that the football team does well than the hockey team. In the NHL, I'd say I support Washington Capitals but the love isn't similar when compared to that of Liverpool."

Having turned 30-years old just this week, Esdor has had a very long career in virtual hockey, and of course these years hold several great memories. We asked him for the memory he is most fond of.

"One of the most important ones is the Swedish NHL Championship in 2016 where I finished third. Some of the guys I met during that tournament are still some of my best friends in our community. I'm not sure if I would have ended up being where I am now if it wasn't for that tournament. Another memory is the eSHL. It was awesome to see so many real clubs from the SHL being involved in a great tournament that I was fortunate to commentate on. I really want the Swedish clubs to be more involved in virtual hockey in the future."

The virtual hockey scene has seen some good growth in recent years with new partners and players constantly flowing in. Many players have their issues with the game, but consistently return to playing it. Esdor sees the development having a positive direction and is especially excited for some potential Europe vs North America 6v6 games in the future.

"I hope that more people can make a living playing the game that we have a love and hate relationship with. Many people are complaining but still we keep on playing the game every year. One thing that I look forward to a lot is 6v6 games between European and North American teams. With enough sponsors and NHL teams involved I really hope we can see tournaments like that on a regular basis."
 

Johan @Zalaz Nilsson and @esdor are known as a dynamic duo doing commentary in Swedish, they were able to really shine during the inaugural SCL season.

The EA Sports NHL series holds a steady place as one of the highest selling console games in the Nordic countries and with that has up-and comers and future talents surfacing on a daily basis - at least you'd think so. We wanted some input from Esdor on what these hopeful youngsters should focus on in order to play up there with the greats of the game.

"You have to balance gaming with other things. Exercising is important and you need to do other things in life than just play NHL all day long. Don't forget to keep in touch with your friends outside of gaming, this is one thing I haven't been very good at lately. It's easy to forget about other stuff than the game and it's a thin line to balance between being dedicated and playing too much for your own good, but obviously if you want to be the greatest at something you also need to put in the hours. Also if you feel like you might lack skills there is other ways of making a career in virtual hockey. I am far from the best player but I think my personality and hard work has brought me a long way. Try to find your own way to make it in the scene."

When being asked about what kind of player he is on the ice, it comes as no surprise that he likes to be vocal in the party chat and helps out his teammates whenever possible.

"Right now I actually enjoy playing as a defender in 6v6 but back in my early days with Lavetten I played left wing or center. When I play EASHL I want to be the talkative guy in the party chat - I am very bad at being quiet. I always compliment my teammate scoring a nice goal or making a big save. I play 6v6 mainly for fun but of course I always want to win, it's also good for my commentary skills."

The interview with @esdor was capped off with a few shorter questions, but as we all know, he is not a man of few words and gave us some very interesting answers, here we go with some quicker ones:

Your job is to form a 6vs6 lineup of players who you think will raise their level competitively in the future - who do you pick?

"Erik Rotsenius which is his real name went from being a new player in NHL 20 to becoming one of the most interesting goalie prospects in less than a year. He played for Örebro in ECL 10 and for Djurgården in the SCL. In ECL 11 he did amazing as the goalie for Växjö with a 83.49 save percentage in the playoffs."

"As LD I pick Toneee9 from Swiss team ZSC Lions. After three seasons in different Lite teams he decided to join Zürich. He has done great for his new team so far. He was one of the key factors to ZSC's great defense in the ECL Pro quarterfinals against Djurgården where they only let in two goals in 4 games."

"My RD pick is going to be zNicops from Finnish Enigma. Nico has been a good 1v1 player for years but now he finally has made an impact in the 6v6-scene aswell. He played very well against Växjö in the quarterfinals. You can tell that his individual skill helped him in 6v6 too. Nico played for Kouvolan KooKoo in the eLiiga last season."

"Tacterz has been seen as a very good young player for a while in the Swedish scene. He stepped down from Elite team Färjestad to get motivation and time on the ice instead of being a backup. He has done great for Björklöven in ECL Lite and is one of the key factors for Björklöven reaching the ECL Lite semifinals."

"The center Tromi13 is the assistant captain of Grenoble and one of their most important players. Like the other forwards on this list, he also played in the ECL Lite group 3 this season."

"The GWC European Regionals finalist from 2019 has been in the 6v6 scene for a while now. He played two seasons in the Pro division before and is now looking for a promotion with Exerceo. Sagee averages more than 2 points per game in the playoffs and in the regular season he averaged more than 3 points per game."
 

You've been seen doing charity streams for the likes of Musikhjälpen occasionally - is that something close to heart for you and how did that thought come to mind?

"I feel that I want to do my best as a public person to make this world a better place. I have done many different types of charity streams over the years and it's something that I will keep on doing. Musikhjälpen is very good since you know where the money will go. They have different themes every year. Last year the slogan was "No human should be without health care". It's unreal that the whole event raised close to 4,5 million euros. I have also done multiple streams where I raised money for organisations that are fighting against cancer. That horrible disease is something that almost everyone experienced in some way."

As you've been a part of the scene for quite some time already, what do you think are the biggest changes that have happened over the years?

"In Sweden we have a lot more people trying to be good at this game. Both in 1v1 and in 6v6. When I started playing this game competitively the amount of good players in Sweden was nowhere near what it is today. Finland is so much ahead of us but it is nice to see good players from other countries like Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Slovakia and Latvia for example. Another thing that has changed is the interest from sponsors. I love to see that big companies are sponsoring NHL tournaments nowadays."

So far this season, FILADELPHIA have made it clear that no one will be stopping them from reaching their third ECL title since starting their journey with the lineup (barring minor changes) as we know it back in ECL 7. A record breaking regular season (highest point total ever, most shutouts ever) puts them at the #1 seed and we all know that if anyone, these guys will be able to handle that pressure. Eki has been the teams leading scorer this season but it should be noted that finding secondary or tertiary options is no problem for the FILADELPHIA team that looks as strong as ever. Their fiercest rivalry against HAVU Gaming looked like child's play in the second last round of the regular season, where FILA dissected HAVU and walked away with two routine wins out of the normally so tough matchup.

Some questions were looming before the season about whether Northern Ascendancy would be able to handle seeing a high percentage of player turnover over the offseason, but long time captain Connor @MartindalexC Martindale has been able to pull a rabbit out of his hat and push his team to their absolute maximum performance - unless they still have some tricks up their sleeve. What clouds the sky is the fact that NOR is heading into the playoffs with a cold streak, having grabbed only 3 wins and a total of 7 points out of their last ten games, albeit most of them being matches against playoff bound teams. NOR is also by far the most penalized team heading into the playoffs and can with their 15th ranking penalty kill in the league by no means afford to sit in the box against a lethal offensive team like FILADELPHIA. 

Prediction:
An interesting dynamic to this matchup is brought by the fact that just a few months back, Eki spent the SCL with MartindalexC and his NOR, despite NOR having almost a completely different roster by now there could be some strategic takeaway from that time spent together on both sides of the puck. Statistically, the outcome in this series is very clear - Northern Ascendancy haven't beaten FILADELPHIA on ECL ice since back in ECL 7 (in 2018) when the two teams met in a similar setup in the quarterfinals. Then, the series ended 4-1 in favor of FILADELPHIA, which I believe will be the result this time too.

HAVU Gaming saw some changes to their roster for the first time since ECL 8, when Kristian-Mikael @Nassustelija Katajisto joined the squad, forming their well-known championship machine. The loss of Ilmari @Buantso Lehkonen stings, but at least based on what we've seen so far, Hannes @Hansulinho Kettunen has done well in filling those boots. The thing is, Puantso has always been at his best in the playoffs so now is when the real test for Hansu starts. Team captain FlyerKungen is having a career season if that's even possible for a man who's seemingly won it all, so he can definitely be counted on even this season when the going gets rough. What raises some eyebrows is the fact that in the recent HAVU-FILA regular season matchup, HAVU didn't show up to play like they use to. The games were seemingly kept close, but the eye test indicates that they were outplayed by their sweet rivals. It might just be a night off and even if they would have needed to make some fixes, they've had a weeks time to do so. Now is the time to be at their best and that is what HAVU is known for in the playoffs, bring it on, they say.

Roots Gaming is "the other green team" in the Elite division, but despite being overshadowed by the HAVU powerhouse, we're talking about a definite Elite title contender who can dismantle just about any team if and when the stars align. The addition of Foppatofflan has given them an added level of creativity on offense and their quick puck movement can be tough to handle even for some better teams around. Väinö @vSilenttio Pietilä seems to be back in his prime and as we know is a vocal leader who can do good things for his team when he plays like he has been so far this season. When going up against a team like HAVU, it's always highly doubtful for the underdog to walk away victorious, but IF Roots were to do so, now is their time.

Prediction:
The black and green battle rages hard in this one and despite looking out of focus from time to time in the regular season, HAVU will be coming to play in the postseason as always. Roots is one of the few teams that managed to beat HAVU in the regular season, but wins against a team of HAVU's caliber come few and far between even for your regular ECL Elite squad. Roots are looking better than ever this season and that is why they will manage to challenge HAVU, but the defending champions will march on, 4-2 for HAVU.

(3)  hREDS vs Vesa Pompa  (6)

It's been said multiple times and should be stressed ahead of every time hREDS take the ice. They are possibly the most skilled team out there at the moment. The offensive power that the squad possesses is nearly unmatched at the moment and with that Joukki managed to grab the regular season scoring title with a stunning 78 points to his name and beside him, Perttu @Beniittto Kemppainen tied for most assists ever (55) in a regular season whereas Tuukka @Tuukka.R Röpelinen set a new goal scoring high for defensemen in the regular season (16). It is clear that hREDS will be able to outscore just about any opponent in the league, but the difference in them compared to champions like FILADELPHIA and HAVU Gaming in their prime is defensive play. If hREDS wishes to win - which I believe they can - they will need to find a way to tighten up defensively without sacrificing their number one weapon, which is their lethal offense.

Vesa Pompa were one of the most underestimated teams in our season preview, but it has turned out that has indeed gelled nicely and been able to perform at a high level - as their talent packed roster would suggest. The team, being led in scoring by Finnish imports jergeli and Vili @Vilupoika Häkkinen of former Butterfly Effect fame has aptly been able to climb into playoff contention in just their second season at the Elite level. Vesa Pompa has seen a lot of turnover over the years with the constant being captain Johan @Lehmannens Lehmann and winger Henrik @Eken45jr Eklund, who despite being widely considered as one of the most talented young players around is yet to truly make his claim as one of the very top players in the division. Maybe this playoff run is his time to shine?

Prediction:
It will be a warm reunion to start the series between former Butterfly Effect forward trio Niklas @NikkeDangles Tukiainen on the hREDS side, whereas Jergeli and Vilupoika will be representing Vesa Pompa. The trio has been apart on ECL ice since ECL 9, when they last wreaked havoc on the division in the old purple jerseys. The difference in this series will most likely be experience in playing together. There is no doubt in the world that Vesa Pompa wouldn't possess the skill to beat hREDS, but due to the fact that hREDS have so much more time together, they will win this series 4-1.

Since last ECL, Farjestad BK has turned their roster into an all-Swedish machine and are currently the lone Elite team flying that flag proudly. We're all very familiar with their style of play, but especially with the addition of Anton @antoniomannen004 Svensander on the right wing the team has managed to diversify their game and give themselves more of a puck possession option whenever that might be required. Compared to the FBK we saw back in ECL 10, this team is considerably stronger defensively while being able to maintain their danger on offense, which could partially be attributed to good signings, but also simply due to evolving their play and finding better situational awareness in seemingly trivial situations on the ice. The worrysome part for them is that Andreas @affelj96 Ljungberg is their number one option and has scored over 40% of the goals for his team this season. Secondary scoring surely exists but it will be interesting to see whether they need to find it or not in this series.

Last season has surely not been forgotten in the JYP camp. Their roster has seen some minor, but very meaningful turnover as mainly Kristian @kriketski17 Veijola suddenly left prior to the season, and was swiftly replaced by equally talented young gun Valtteri @Vattu__ Virtanen. The thing is, though, that Kriketski is an incredibly impactful player on the ice - most of the times for good, but sometimes for bad. Losing such a player has forced JYP to evolve, just alike their opponent and despite being outplayed in the playoffs last season, this time will surely look a lot different. JYP is boasting one of the most skilled defensive pairings in the league and will be utilizing both of them to create danger and odd-man chances on both sides of the ice, and their offensive trio can very well make things happen on their own if need be. Overall, we're looking at a JYP that is more balanced than last season, but do they have that extra something that will push them on to the next round? We'll see.

Prediction: 
Despite there being a significant amount of turnover from last season in both teams, we all still remember what happened back in ECL 10 Elite, when FBK dismantled the #1 seed and caused an incredible upset. It'll surely be a factor that could have an impact on the first few games even in this series, but as play moves on, those memories will fade. We're looking at a tremendously exciting matchup that will extend into games 6-7, and I'm hoping for the latter. JYP will bounce back from last season and advance 4-3.

What a season it has been so far and now we are already heading to the semifinals! It seems that I was completely wrong with the predictions of the quarterfinals when it was predicted that the games were going to be extremely tight. All of these four great teams had impressive performances in the quarterfinals beating their opponents with clear margins and they showed us the reason why they belong in the top four of ECL 11 Pro. Now all that remains is to figure out which of these teams will go to the finals. As previously, we here at NHLGamer will take a look at the semifinalists and make our best try at predicting these series.

(1)  GOONS vs ZSC Esports  (8) 

GOONS continued their victory march by beating RCTIC with a clear 4-0 score. There isn’t really that much to say, this team is having a perfect season and no-one has been able to find out how to stop them. Left winger @pikkuroger is dominating the stats table with an unbelievable 40 points in just 8 games and his teammates @xKeskitalo and @kriketski17 are right behind him in the top 3. Something that can’t be overlooked is Kriketski‘s playing style. It’s really interesting that a player can score 34 points and have 82 hits in 8 playoff games. I think we’re closing in on the division record since the guy has now hit a total of 378 times in 38 games. While the GOONS attackers are smashing, scoring and stealing the spotlights up front, the teams defenders @Miika(MiiQu81-), @viba2008 and goalkeeper @SanteriAK47 (santerichristian) are keeping their own end clear and giving the team and especially the attacking trio a chance to play brave offensive hockey without the fear that every loose puck will turn into a dangerous counter-attack. As I have described in earlier previews, GOONS is really complete in every part of the game and it takes a lot of work to find out how to overcome them.

Could ZSC Esports be the team that will finally figure out the weak points of their opponent and put an end to GOONS perfect season? There is no doubt that the team should be mentally well prepared for this great challenge ahead. ZSC Esports took a really convincing victory over Djurgarden Hockey with a 4-0 score and sent a strong message to the whole league that they deserve to be among the teams competing for the Elite spot for next season. Team captain and center @Original-SnuS is the scoring leader of the team with 17 points in 10 games and the fact that every skater on ice has grabbed pretty much the same amount of points tells a lot about ZSC Esports' style of playing this game. Left winger @Alex28 (I__LX__I) is the best goal scorer for his team with 9 goals in 10 games while right winger @Freeman7187 has concentrated more on the creative side of the game. Defenders @Toneee9 and @Haldeem have played a good season at back and become a known threat on the blueline for their accurate slapshots. Even though we are talking about a great team effort it is the goalkeeper @afc_Tschitsch (eTschitsch) that has become one of the brightest stars for his team and of the whole playoffs as well. 90 saves in 10 games and an outstanding 84.11% save percentage tells the fact that GOONS will be facing the hottest keeper in the division at the moment.   

Prediction: ‘’Domination’’ is the word to describe GOONS' season and we are still searching for the team that is able to stop them. The individual talent, experience from high level and the way these things have formed up into a single unit have made GOONS unstoppable so far. ZSC Esports has a great task at hand but as the season has shown us this team has been able to improve their game throughout the competition and there is no doubt they will be well prepared for the semifinals as well. However this won’t be enough. It seems to be impossible to stop talented GOONS attackers from scoring and even the rock solid ZSC Esports defense won’t be able to shut the doors this time. ZSC Esports great season will end in the semifinals and GOONS will continue to the finals with a score of 4-1.        

(2)  Tunnel Vision vs Enigma  (6)

Tunnel Vision played a strong series against Rookie Mistakes in the quarterfinals and the team advanced to the semifinals with a comfortable 4-0 series win. After the first game that ended 1-0 in overtime for Tunnel Vision, Rookie Mistakes couldn’t keep up with the speed of their opponent. It was a great response to the difficulties in the first round of the playoffs against Nordic Stars as this time Tunnel Vision came out as clear winners. Left winger @BensaPoju (Jerskayy) continues his good form and is the top scorer for his team with 12 goals in 10 games. Right winger @Sokkelo__ is right behind him with 9 goals and 16 points in 10 games and center @Pikkardz is a couple of points behind his wingers. Defender @tombo_02 is currently leading the defenders points and assists table with 13 assists and 14 points in 10 games as the other defender @Frilander is clearly the more defensive of the two. Goalkeeper @Erholtzi has been the starting goalie with an 81.08% save percentage and a league leading 1.4 GAA. Tunnel Vision has been able to improve their game a lot since the start of the season and now they have to play at their maximum limits to beat another strong title favorite in the semifinals. 

Enigma was able to beat the strong Vaxjo Lakers with an impressive 4-1 series win in the quarterfinals. Even though the series ended clearly in Enigma’s favor, games were extremely tight and almost all of the games ended with a one goal margin. Vaxjo Lakers had a great season in the offensive zone and Enigma showed real maturity as they put forth a balanced display with strong defense and finished the series as deserving winners. Left winger and captain @Nieppii is the points leader for Enigma with 24 points in 9 games. Right behind him comes the center @laitineen64 with 21 points and right winger @sannteri has scored 17 points so far. Defenders @Makeaxl and @zNico aren’t enjoying a great playoffs in the points department but it’s clear that their job in this team is to defend while the goal scoring is left to the forwards and they have done their job with great success. In this series we’re also having a matchup between two great goalkeepers as Enigma keeper @Pirtsa89 is also having a great season with 81.69% in save percentage and a 1.44 GAA. Enigma was really close to being one of the Elite division teams this season and they are now certainly hungrier than ever for success and claiming what they feel is theirs.       

Prediction: In the end Tunnel Vision had a smooth run to the semifinals as they were able to play their own game at the best level. Tunnel Vision has been constantly improving this season and now they are facing a team with a pretty similar story. It’s obvious that both of these teams have a real shot to earn the promotion to Elite this season but also both teams want to do that with the Pro division title in their trophy case. In my opinion Enigma’s series against Vaxjo Lakers was really promising. The team knows what it takes to shut down even the most dangerous attacking opponents and this could give them an edge over Tunnel Vision. That's why I believe that the series will be tight but Enigma will advance to the finals with the score 2-4.

The ECL 11 Lite season has now reached its semifinal stage and as usual, by now we know the four best Lite teams this season. Most of the favorites are still in the race for the ECL Lite title and therefore I predict extremely tight semifinal series that could very well be extended to a 7th bout in either one of the matchups. Before the quarterfinals, I predicted all "surprise teams" to be eliminated from the competition but Hotbox is only one of those left as they have consistently overturned predictions. Hotbox surely is having a season to remember going on but Bjorkloven Esport - the biggest candidate at the moment for the ECL Lite title - is their biggest challenge yet. One of the most interesting points in the semifinals is that all semifinalists are from the same regular season group - a feat for which the odds are very slim. Go group 3!

(1)  Bjorkloven Esport vsHotbox   (42)

Bjorkloven Esport has advanced convincingly to this stage and is in my books the biggest favorite to win the ECL Lite title. Hotbox is one of the phenomenons of the seasons and the sole remaining clear underdog at this stage. They are now facing their biggest obstacle yet, but Hotbox sure are ready for this huge challenge. Bjorkloven's goalies are bit ahead of Hotbox's counterparts and their biggest scoring stars have a similar edge so this might be the end of the Hotbox success story in this semifinal series. However, Hotbox has progressed this far against all odds so there is of course a place for an upset this time too. @olgaaa71 and @Tacterz combining for nearly 200 points between the two of them in the regular season is outright ridiculous, which just shows the scoring prowess that the Bjorkloven team possesses in this division. The Hotbox dynamic duo @Frans-Fin & @Jann3_67_ isn't far behind, but a combined 150 markers is far less. Bjorkloven will be facing the interesting decision of which goaltender to play in this series as both of their netminders have been solid throughout.

While the clear star power individuals aren't as bright for Grenoble BDL Esport, the 'I' in that team has been compensated with extremely disciplined team play. By being one of the most well oiled units in the league they've reached this far and are currently the torchbearers for French virtual hockey. When it comes to individual skill, Exerceo in turn possesses these key components better while simultaneously being able to generate disciplined approach to play. This is why they are a minor favorite in this series for me. While Exerceo has the edge individually, the scoring differential in the playoffs hasn't been so large and in fact the clear leader here is @Adri1_SCP for Grenoble. Adri will be the x-factor for the French team but they will require to find secondary alternatives if and when Exerceo shut him down.

Despite his young age, Aleksi @loimmu Loimuvirta has been playing virtual hockey for several years. During his career, he has represented not only his current team FILADELPHIA in various constellations and under various names, but also Farjestad BK and teams like Victorious Secret HC and Laser HT back in the day. Recent years have been very rewarding for the solid defenseman, filling up his trophy case nicely, most recently with the FCL title together with FILADELPHIA.

A lot of different memories have been seized along the long virtual hockey career. However, one memory is above all others, namely playing for the first time in a live event, which also turned out being a success.

"The best memory for me is definitely the first live event, which was the IS Cup 3/eSM, where we managed to grab our first Finnish Championship title. It was amazing to be able to put faces to all the gamertags and to get to know people better in general."

Beginning of FILADELPHIA

Loimmu has been a part of FILA's defense corps for several years already. He talks about how the team started in the first place and how it has become one of the long-term success stories of the scene.

"FILA was built from the start with the mentality of being a team coming to challenge for the title of best team in Europe. Joonas @Patzlaf Paatiala then put together one of the most skilled teams in the scene, but at the same time the team also had the best team spirit, at least in my own opinion. Out of these two factors I'd consider the latter as being the x-factor for us, although the importance of raw skill cannot be understated. Often we'd be trailing but catch up and eventually win due to maintaining a level of humor in the game despite our playing not being that good at the moment. I think we've always been on the same track and kept spirits high."

When asked, he admits to being a very big fan of the Philadelphia Flyers and being especially fond of Kimmo Timonen besides legend Jaromir Jagr as a kid.

In addition to playing NHL, Loimmu's selection of favorite games also includes CS:GO, which he often spends his free time playing. He admits that playing CS:GO is a very good change of pace from the regular NHL grind.

"If I wouldn't spend so much time on NHL, CS would definitely be my game of choice. Currently it works as a great tandem for me alongside NHL. The most intriguing aspect of  CS is the importance of skill, perhaps a NHL could also take inspiration from this, taking into account the growing popularity of competitive."

Gaining experience on the right wing

Loimmu is a very familiar sight in the defensive zone, but over the course of his virtual hockey career he has also played as a right winger. Even though his career began as a forward, the defenders role gradually became his favorite.

"Yes, the RD spot is the most comfortable place for me to play, and RW comes in as a good number two. I started my career on the right wing, and then moved over to the middle lane before establishing myself as a defenseman. I'm ready to play as a forward if the team would need me to. In the off season, Erik @EkiTammenpää wanted to test out defense and we ended up switching spots for a couple of weeks. The team quickly realized their mistake and moved Eki back up front."

Playing as a defender has its own challenges and aspects to it. Loimmu admits that possessing some forward experience has been very useful. He notes that often mistakes made by a defender are more clearly visible, as they often lead to goal-scoring situations for the opponent. Nor do defenders often get the credit they deserve for their success.

"I'd say pacing the game is one of my strengths and as a forward I clearly noticed how much it would help you out when the defensemen would also handle joining the rush well. On the other hand, there are downsides to playing as a defender too, mainly that your mistakes are usually regarded as graver when compared to making similar mistakes on offense. I think defenders also rarely get credit for a good game. If a team wins 7-2 then the attackers have been great, and if you win 2-0 the goalkeeper has been a brick wall."

When asked if Loimmu has any favorite way of scoring a goal, he grins and says that he enjoys deflecting the puck in via opposing players shin guards.

Starting off with Joukki

Loimuvirta has always liked hockey, and he admits that's the biggest reason he's still seen on the virtual ice. He notes that the console scene has grown very much over the past few years, which is only a positive thing.

"I've always liked hockey, that's the biggest reason I'm still playing NHL. Back in the day when I started out, the scene wasn't as big as it is now (thanks to @Kenu) so I didn't really look up to any specific top players. On the other hand, Joakim @Joukki Nyholm introduced me to 6s at the beginning of my career, and back then he was way better than me. Despite this, we got along well and I think Joukki must have seen some potential in me since we kept playing together. At the time, I looked up to him and I'm happy to say we're still good friends to this day."

Starting 6 - Loimmu's picks

We asked the defender if he could put together the starting lineup of his dreams - then what would it look like. The only condition was that he can't pick his own team's players.

"In my opinion, there are too few absolute top players in the scene, so this is what I'd call a 'project team' consisting of some veterans and prospects. 
C Risto @Dominointi Järvi: ''Seppo'' is one of the longest serving top-of-the-line forwards in the entire scene, and would certainly be a good mentor in this team with his great hockey sense.
LW Roope @pikkuroger Bergström: Scouted by Patzlaf, pigguroger is (at least according to Joonas) a big name for the future, and would surely have a good time scoring with the next guy besides him.
RW Niklas @NikkeDangles Tukiainen: Perhaps the scene's most skilled forward, ''NikkeDee" guarantees jaw-dropping plays perfected on the practice ice.
LD Kristian-Mikael @Nassustelija Katajisto: Lempäälä's gift to the world, Nassustelija would be the backbone of this team, supporting with surefire defensive play day in and day out.
RD Viljo @viba2008 Kähkönen: Despite his very young age, Viba has caught the attention of several teams. There are rumours that he also has potential in hockey on the actual ice and I'm sure he'll do great in whichever sport he chooses to be his number one.
G Ville @Supreex Korhonen: Supreex has been around the game for a long time, and it would be interesting to see him play for a top team in the league. Right now, one of the best goalkeepers around."

We asked the experienced defender what kind of greetings he would send to those young people who might dream of playing competitively at the top of the virtual hockey world one day.

"As I said before, there aren't too many top players in the scene after all, so if you're interested in NHL, I suggest you pick up the controller and try to take some influence from the streams of top players. After that you should be ready to get into some 6v6 action!"

"Most of the top players have a background in either hockey, floorball or football, so I suppose that won't hurt you. I don't think it's a coincidence, because you need that sense for the game. Secondly I'd like to pinpoint that even this game requires some grinding and hours put into it, and above all a passion for hockey. Of course to succeed in a team sport you also need to be able to take others into account, no one likes playing with grumpy gamers", Loimmu continues.

We're closing in on the end of the ECL 11 Elite regular season and with that it's only natural that the noose around the necks of some ensembles is tightening, whereas some others are still scrambling for those last couple of points in order to either secure their playoff spot or put them in the best possible position for the postseason. The past week held some interesting events and even some records were broken, as FILADELPHIA's Casper @ICappeI Lundgren passed former goalie colleague turned winger Hannes @Hansulinho Kettunen for most ECL Elite shutouts in one season. The former record stood at 9 shutouts replicated in both the ECL 8 and ECL 9 regular seasons, but is now at 11 with four games to go for FILADELPHIA. That means that @ICappeI has the possibility to totally deny the opposition in 50% of the regular season games, which is something absolutely unheard of and will surely be a record that could stand the test of time for quite a while in the ECL as we know it. It remains to be seen how far they can take it as a team, but the opposition in their last week will be tough as HAVU Gaming and KOVA Esports are looking to spoil the party.

Another player deserving of an honorable mention and some extra pats on the back is SJ Gaming winger Mikko @EABUNKA Kärkkäinen, who announced that despite receiving terrible news about health concerns in his immediate family was able to show up to play on Thursday night against hREDS. No concerns were visible as the skilled winger took the ice, leading his team to an overtime win and an overtime loss, securing 3 points for SJ Gaming while grabbing a goal and a helper in both games for himself. Obviously there are things way bigger than the sport we're all playing, but the performance Thursday night by @EABUNKA surely is an inspirational show of determination and the support given by the community to a player in distress once again proved that we are way bigger than just the group of people playing video games for a pastime. That's an early nominee for this season's wholesome award.

At the moment, most teams are at 26 games played, with Team LEISURE and SJ Gaming being the exceptions. No spot in the standings is set in stone, but a number of teams have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs at this point. With certainty we can state that a postseason among the top eight will take a minimum of 31 points, meaning that SAWO ESPORTS, YMCA Esports, Gotham Knights, SJ Gaming and KOVA Esports are still within striking range but the leash is extremely short at least for SAWO, who will have to win every game while Northern Ascendancy and Roots will have to draw blanks for the rest of the week - and even then it's up to tie-breakers. The battle at the bottom of the standings is raging tough as no one will want to be left dead last facing direct relegation. Currently in 16th place is Dark Horse, who are in for a tough last week with games against KOVA Esports and hREDS remaining, so a near perfect performance will be needed in order to get our of the trouble they've put themselves in. 

When it comes to scoring points, it seems like no one does it better this season than Cover gamer Tuukka @FlyerKungen Kuha and rightfully so. The HAVU winger has been a consistent performer throughout his career at the top level but is actually on pace to break his ECL Elite scoring personal best of 73 points this season. The two most prevalent goal scorers can be found on @FlyerKungen's line, which of course has contributed to his totals and the entire HAVU trio with Risto @Dominointi Järvi and @Hansulinho added to the mix seems to be as ready as ever for the postseason. The only player outside of your current top three teams making his way into the top 10 scorers is André @Foppatofflan Liljegren from Roots, who fits the color scheme but has also played an incredible season after taking a short stint outside the Elite division with Djurgarden Hockey back in ECL 10.

Take a look at the scoring leaders for defensemen and you might think we've made a mistake but no, Väinö @vSilenttio Pietilä brings glory to his dear Roots Gaming by being close to surpassing his personal best performance at the ECL Elite level (31 points back in ECL 4 Elite with SIKA) while being in a position to see postseason action with this team for the third consecutive season already. It seems like he has been teasing calling it quits for an extended time already and would be going out on a high note after an individual performance like this, but you surely can't quit now, can you!? 

Goaltenders - who knows anything about those? I for sure don't but as already stated, @ICappeI is out here setting records and looking good doing so. However, outside of the top 10 winningest goaltenders this season, we find Juuso @Juizki Nikkinen, who's a part of a struggling SAWO Esports but definitely helped his team out last week. The solid netminder shut out the opposition in three straight contests, keeping his own net untouched for a total duration of 249 minutes and 17 seconds, which might be some kind of record at this level if someone would be keeping track. In general, @Juizki has put forth a solid effort all season long, but his team has faced their fair share of adversity and are highly doubtful to make postseason in any other form than a relegation battle.

Power Rankings

The power rankings reflect games played between 11.1 and 17.1.

Making a return this season will be the Elite: Power Rankings, provided by @MartindalexC. As always, the rankings are generated by weighting a team's results with the level of opposition that was faced, i.e. a team that went 4-0-0 against teams at the very bottom of Elite may very well be ranked below a team that went 0-4-0 against Elite's very finest. Without further ado though, let's have a look at how teams fared over the fifth week of ECL 11 Elite:

The first round of the playoffs is now behind and now we know the quarterfinalists of ECL 11 Pro. The best eight teams of the season are now one step closer to the semifinals and their place in the Elite relegation series. Like in the previous seasons, the winner of the competition will automatically get the spot in ECL 12 Elite and other semifinalists will have their shot in the relegation series against bottom Elite teams. However it’s certain that none of the teams in the competition is thinking only about the relegation series as everyone has an equal chance to win the title and have their names written in the history books. 

The first round of the playoffs in general went pretty much as expected. Teams that were clear favorites to win had no big problems beating their opponents and the series that were expected to be tight until the final games didn’t disappoint us either. Many new teams and players were able to experience the Pro playoffs for the first time and I bet those players can’t wait to do it again and go even further next time.

Now it’s time to focus on the remaining teams of the competition. All of these eight teams have deserved their place in the quarterfinals and from now on it’s going to be almost impossible to predict the favorites or the winners of the series. Nevertheless we decided to try our best.   

(1)  GOONS vs RCTIC  (12)

GOONS had no mercy for Sack Brothers in the first round of the playoffs as their series ended 4-0 and GOONS scored 26 goals in four games. Sack Brothers decided bravely to head to the series with an attacking mindset, which turned out to be very costly for them. GOONS punished the opponents from every mistake and when there was too much space given for them in the offensive zone, the puck usually found its way to the back of the net. The first playoff round was a really complete display from the team as the whole season has been so far. This time Sack Brothers wasn’t able to put the team to a real test and GOONS must avoid getting too comfortable with the current situation as they will face a really different kind of opponent in the next round.  

RCTIC was able to beat Inter Iceland in the first playoff round with the series score 2-4. RCTIC did a really good job forcing their opponents out of their comfort zone as Inter Iceland couldn’t play their really direct, attacking and fast phased style of hockey. The same mentality must continue in the next round as well, as their next challengers are currently the best team in the league. One of the biggest strengths of RCTIC is their ability to adapt to the way their opponents play. Finding the right balance between attack and defense was enough against Inter Iceland, this time a defense first mentality will most likely be their key to success. The quality in the RCTIC roster is definitely enough to challenge GOONS, so they won't have to think about going full turtle mode for this series. 

Key points to follow:

Familiar enemies: These teams have already faced each other in the regular season and GOONS were able to win both games in regulation time (2-1, 1-4). There wasn’t that big of a difference between the two teams and I'm pretty sure both teams have processed what they could have done better back then. The team that has done their homework better, will have an advantage heading into the series.  

Theme of the series: We’re yet to see RCTIC playing with the same defensive mentality that led them to success last year in the FCL. It’ll be interesting to see how much RCTIC will sacrifice from their offense to keep their own end safe and how this will affect GOONS' playing since getting into the zone has been relatively easy for them so far.

Every mistake counts: GOONS were merciless against Sack Brothers in every mistake they made. Although RCTIC isn’t known for making lots of mistakes, even they have to concentrate with extra care not to give any leeway for their opponent. The same goes both ways especially if RCTIC manages to shut down the blue line like they are able to do at their best, every single missed pass or giveaway can become very costly for GOONS.  

Prediction: GOONS haven’t shown any real weaknesses yet, but I believe that RCTIC is a team that could expose some. GOONS will start the series strong but the further the series go on, the more RCTIC will figure out their opponents tricks. We could see a surprisingly even series but in the end the quality of the GOONS roster and the confidence in their playing will take them to the next round with the score 4-3. 

(2)  Tunnel Vision vs Rookie Mistakes  (10)

Tunnel Vision did what was expected from them as the team advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a 4-2 score against Nordic Stars. However it didn’t come easily for them as Nordic Stars proved to be very worthy opponents and were really close to taking the series to game seven. Small things that differentiate good teams from excellent were the difference makers in this series and led the right team to the next round. I could believe that despite the victory, Tunnel Vision isn’t completely happy with their display in the first round. This could actually serve them well as there won’t be a danger that the team would get too confident which can sometimes lead to underestimating the opponents or certain aspects of the game. Despite the fact that the first round didn’t go as smoothly as the team would have hoped, I still see Tunnel Vision as one of the strongest candidates for the cup this season.    

Rookie Mistakes played a really good series against Herlev Eagles. Despite the underdog status Rookie Mistakes was able to win the series 2-4 and advance to the next round. Herlev Eagles was having a great season in the attacking zone, but Rookie Mistakes didn’t have to change much of their usual way of playing to overcome their opponents. At times their opponent held control of the games but Rookie Mistakes didn’t panic and the team was able to score when it was needed the most. The first round was definitely promising from Rookie Mistakes and their next opponents have a really similar style of playing the game as Herlev Eagles did. If the team can keep their confidence and continue in the same form as so far, they will have a real shot against one of the favorites in the competition.

Key points to follow:

Artists on ice: There is an enormous amount of individual talent on the ice when these two teams meet. We will see plenty of brave 1v1 challenges and clever passes from every player. Especially the defensemen will play a major role in this series as they don’t want these guys slipping out of their hands and alone against the goalie because the puck will be in the net with a very high likelihood. 

Old friends: Tunnel Vision defender @tombo_02 and Rookie Mistakes defender @Patsberg_ will face their old teams from ECL 10 Pro in this series. This kind of situation will always add an extra spice to the mix. Both sides want to prove that they made the right decision leaving the club and of course both players can inform their own teams of the weaknesses and strengths of their opponents.      

Withstanding pressure: Tunnel Vision is expected to be the stronger of the two sides. After a convincing victory against Herlev Eagles, Rookie Mistakes have proven that they have what it takes to challenge every team remaining in the tournament and even challenge for the cup at the end. Pressure has always two sides to it, you can suffer from it or you can benefit from it. I believe the pressure could actually help Tunnel Vision with focusing on the game and to play more as a team which will give them an advantage in series like this.  

Prediction: You could say that the first playoff round worked out as a minor wake up call for Tunnel Vision and they will be more prepared to face their opponents this time. Rookie Mistakes have done an excellent job this far but now they will face an obstacle that is too big to overcome. Tunnel Vision will thrive under pressure and advance to the next round with the score 4-2. 
 

(4)  Djurgarden Hockey vs ZSC Esports  (8) 

Djurgarden Hockey won against Blackdawgs in the first round of the playoffs with the score being 4-2. The start of the series was really tight and there were short periods where Blackdawgs had clear control of the game. However, Djurgarden Hockey took the lead in the the series and kept it all the way to the end with a confident performance. As predicted, Djurgarden Hockey didn’t have to change a thing in their playing from the regular season as the team is already playing with a style that will serve them well in the playoffs. This time they will face a team with a more structured and disciplined playing style than in the first round and it’s going to be a really different kind of challenge ahead. The first games of the series will show us how well their system is working, but I would say that they don’t need to make any changes to their current way of playing the game. 

ZSC Esports did an excellent job beating Pata Hellalla by 4-2. Especially in the last games of the series Pata Hellalla was unable to make important blocks on the shots of ZSC Esports defenders who scored several goals from the blueline. In general, the series were really tight and almost every game of the series ended with a one goal margin. ZSC Esports kept the puck possession for the majority of the series and I believe they will do the same in the next series as well. The team must feel happy as they were finally able to advance through the first playoff round and it will also serve as a massive confidence boost for the whole squad. In the next round ZSC Esports has to be prepared to work even harder as they will face one of the best defensive teams in the league. 

Key points to follow:

Trap hockey galore: Both of these teams trust their disciplined team playing where all five skaters are involved when the team is attacking or defending. Getting into the offensive zone will be really difficult since both of these teams are excellent in blocking the blueline. That’s why I believe that the team that will figure out how to clear the trap better will win the series. We could very well see more dump and chase action in this series than in the whole season so far.   

Powerplay: As the margins are already really small between these two teams, powerplay will become a really important factor. Djurgarden Hockey had an excellent powerplay in the regular season which continued in the first round of the playoffs as well. ZSC Esports took quite a lot of penalties in the regular season so they can’t continue the same trend against Djurgarden Hockey if they want to win. The same goes both ways of course especially now when the ZSC Esports defenders have found the perfect aim for their shots.

Faceoffs: It’s as simple as that, every faceoff will be important in a series that is not expected to have many goals scored in any of the games. Everyone knows how easy it’s to score from a faceoff set play if your opponents aren’t prepared for it. Every player needs to know their role and the centerman needs to make the right decision at the right time, so the eyes will be laid especially on @LordStanley46_ and @Original-SnuS.     

Prediction: I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the games would go to overtime in this series. These teams are really equally balanced and their strengths are very similar. I believe that experience will become the difference maker and that’s why ZSC Esports will take the series home with a game seven overtime goal and win the series 3-4.   

(6)  Enigma vs Vaxjo Lakers  (7) 

Enigma took a convincing 4-0 series win over Company of Geeks and kept their excellent playoff form running. It was a pretty similar story compared to the series between GOONS and Sack Brothers where the winner of the series was better in every part of the game. In the second round of the playoffs Enigma is facing one of the hottest teams at the moment and they have to be well prepared for the new challenge. However the ECL 10 Pro runner-ups know what it takes to win in the playoffs and they have clearly reached their top form now when it’s needed the most. The team did an excellent job against Company of Geeks in shutting down their attacks at the blueline and were able to score with terrifying efficiency when they were given access to the high percentage shooting areas. 

Vaxjo Lakers are in flames. They were able to beat Frosty Kiekko-Vantaa in the first round of the playoffs with a score of 4-1 and on my paper they are now among one of the biggest favorites to win the cup this season. The way these guys can find their linemates stick at the near post is absolutely amazing and their goalkeeper @MrAllsvenskan is having a tremendous season so far. Enigma needs to take extra care of tending to the passing lanes when Vaxjo Lakers are in the offensive zone or the puck will be in the net in the blink of an eye. After beating a team such as Frosty Kiekko-Vantaa that is known for strong defensive play, it’s interesting to see how well they will do against Enigma who aren’t so defensively oriented. However, Enigma is also having an excellent form and they will surely give Vaxjo Lakers a run for their money. 

Key points to follow:

Maximum attack: Neither of these teams want to give the puck possession to their opponents and go full defensive mode. We should see a pretty open game with lots of scoring opportunities and beautiful goals. Both teams have excellent finishers in their lineup so it will be a busy series for both of the goalies. Also defenders will play a key role for their teams as they have to put full focus into marking in their own zone to help the work of the goalies.      

Powerplay: Vaxjo Lakers is currently the best powerplay team in the league. Enigma had a pretty low powerplay percentage in the regular season but they were able to score five powerplay goals in four games in the first round of the playoffs. If you’ve seen Vaxjo Lakers' powerplay you know that it’s close to perfection so Enigma will have to stay away from the penalty box and also keep the current form of their own powerplay.    

Hunger: In ECL 10 Pro, Enigma was really close to winning the finals against Black Horse and very close to beating Gotham Knights in the Elite relegation series but they were left without a reward. This time they are determined to do better and prove everyone they deserve the spot in Elite. On the other side of the table Vaxjo Lakers are hungry to avenge their loss against Enigma in the ECL 10 Pro quarterfinals so there is a lot of pride at stake in this series.

Prediction: I believe that this series will be very entertaining to watch but frustrating to play in. Both of these teams can create scoring chances out of nothing so the focus has to be 100% in the game and on marking your man. I will take a risk and bet against the odds in this one. Vaxjo Lakers will be the stronger of the two sides and advance to the semifinals with the score 3-4.   

The stakes are getting higher after every round of the playoffs and winning in the quarterfinals will be yet another milestone in reaching the dream of playing in the Elite division. The games will be incredibly intense and great entertainment for us viewers. Play hard and fair, remember to respect your opponents and don’t forget to enjoy the games. There are many players in this community that are dreaming of playing in the ECL Pro quarterfinals so remember to cherish the moment. May the best team win!

The ECL 11 Lite season has progressed to the quarterfinal stage and the stakes are higher than ever. There are four tremendously exciting matchups to be played and all of these teams are hungry for the chance to compete for possible promotion spots. the eight best teams are left to battle it out in best-of-seven series. Last round, several predictions failed but the most fascinating thing is that in a top tier league like the ECL, there are so many great players and teams that you can see many good teams losing despite a great campaign simply because their opponents are even better or just happen to have a great day. However, the lightning rarely strikes the same target twice so I won't necessarily flip the table entirely by predicting some of the phenomenons of the season ending in this round.

(1)  Bjorkloven Esport vs Oton Letkutemppu  (51)

Oton Letkutemppu is no noubt one of the phenomenons of the ECL 11 Lite season. Last round, they knocked out 2nd seed ECDC Memmingen Esports so reaching this far is by no means an accident and there could be more to come. Bjorkloven Esports has been a dominant team so far and eliminated another surprise team - the Golden Nights - in quite impressive fashion. Oton Letkutemppu is now in for their biggest challenge yet but has all the means to continue their success story in these playoffs. Bjorkloven Esports is the favorite but like we have already seen, just about anything can happen in these games.

Prediction: Oton Letkutemppu has played their best so far but this time the challenge is likely to be a little too tough and this teams quite phenomenal playoff journey is likely to end. Bjorkloven Esports faces a great team in the series but advances with the score 4-2.

(6)  Ringette HC vs Hotbox   (42)

Similar to the cases of Oton Letkutemppu and Golden Nights this season, Hotbox has managed to pave their way into the top eight against all odd and are running an outstanding playoff campaign. Ringette HC is, however, their biggest challenge so far with a bunch of individual skill and the ability to move the puck quicker than most teams in the division. Hotbox must maintain their current level and boost it just a little bit. Maintaining the level might not be the problem, but boosting it enough to beat Ringette HC four times in this series looks like it could be too much even for this team.

Prediction: Hotbox puts forth great opposition but Ringette HC ends this campaign convincingly 4-1.

(8)  Exerceo vs BoxinElite  (24)

In this series an underdog playing at the limits of their potential faces a marginally but probably decisively stronger opponent. BoxinElite is also one of the highlights of this season and I greatly underestimated their potential in the last round against Lekstugan HC. Exerceo on the other hand is a slight favorite in this matchup but there is no reason that BoxinElite couldn't cause an upset and after reaching this far it is probably not too surprising anymore. This time, BoxinElite will not go underestimated and will at the very least go down swinging.

Prediction: BoxinElite beat favorite Lekstugan HC last round and might do that again. However, Exerceo knows that and sure are more ready than Lekstugan HC for what's to come. Exerceo disrupts BoxinElites run this time by winning 4-2.

(18)  Sjukstugan vs Grenoble BDL Esport  (22)

Grenoble BDL Esports eliminated Sinister in an exciting seven game series. Sjukstugan eliminated Old Farts quite unexpectedly in four straight games. They have the advantage of being able to prepare for longer but Grenoble BDL Esports sure have a massive boost from their recent game seven victory and they also must have a high confidence after defeating a strong Sinister team. I would not be surprised if we end up fighting our way to a game seven again in this series and Sjukstugan will definitely be the biggest test for Grenoble so far. Sjukstugan is their biggest test so far. This is arguably the series to watch this round.

Prediction: Game seven needed. Grenoble BDL Esports has the strength to battle through the series but Sjukstugan is too strong. Sjukstugan advances 4-3.

Last week brought ECL action back also on the ECL Elite level and with that also pushed us past the midway point of the season. Right now we're just past two thirds through the regular season and with that being said, now is the absolute latest point for teams to start revving up those trusty old diesel engines to boost them in their playoff race or in avoiding potential relegation.

The standings are finding their form and as predicted, FILADELPHIA and HAVU Gaming have been the juggernauts reigning lone, as usual. Both of the top two teams are currently also on impressive hot streaks although HAVU has been taken to OT more often than not in their past few bouts - some trouble keeping their eyes on the prize maybe? Vesa Pompa has been performing exceptionally well but without taking anything away from their performance, one must state that their schedule wasn't as harsh as some of their competitors' to start the season. Last week brought the reigning Swedish champs a total of five points in three matchups against some tougher opposition. If not for a few exceptions (mainly Vesa Pompa HC performing above expectations and YMCA Esports underperforming), the season preview seems to be holding up rather well in terms of predictions so far.

Having pumped our own tires enough, let's get into some of the individual performances seen last week. Overall it was a week of "strictly business" when it comes to the games played, at least no highlights went viral across the community. The scoring department was virtually unchanged at the end of last week, but Monday was a breath of fresh air when hREDS managed to put on a scoring show against Team LEISURE, boosting duo Perttu @Beniittto Kemppainen and Joakim @Joukki Nyholm to 2nd and 3rd in the points department with 51 each to their names.

When taking a look at productive defensemen, we're seeing a somewhat surprising name topping the tables. Timi @Rimpe Rimpeläinen has made a long career grinding away at various forward positions but has transitioned his skills exceptionally well into the role of an offensive defenseman while not sacrificing too much in his own end either. His Gotham Knights currently lies just below the playoff line and has been able to perform up to the standards of the division as a unit. The team still has some exciting matchups remaining and will need to salvage every point they can if they want to pave their way into their first ever ECL Elite postseason.

As we continue moving on to the last line of defense, we're taking a look at goaltenders, who from time to time don't get the love they deserve. We're used to seeing the likes of Casper @ICappeI Lundgren and Oskari @SibeIius Grönroos leading the league in that department but they do have challengers for the throne when talking about the best in the business. The two previously mentioned have been in the game and at the top for such a long time but admittedly playing in net for a top team like FILADELPHIA or HAVU Gaming poses unique challenges such as potentially facing a way lower shot volume when compared to other goaltenders in the league, such as for example Johan @McSavid Rundqvist or Ville @Supreex Korhonen for Farjestad BK and Norhtern Ascendancy respectively. If not for a few exceptions, the statistics below exhibit a higher save percentage for goalies facing higher shot volumes on a regular basis. A newcomer that has been making his way into the discussion of top goaltenders in the scene is Vesa Pompa's Filip @Faze91- Azri, who was talked about already prior to the season but has made a surprisingly fast ascent to the top, claiming the clear first string goalie spot for his team in the process.

Making a return this season will be the Elite: Power Rankings, provided by @MartindalexC. The regular season of ECL 11 Pro is now finished and the ‘’big games’’ will begin. It didn’t come as a surprise that the race for the playoff spots and better positions in the standings extended all the way to the last rounds of the season. Both groups were extremely tight and there were some surprises along the way but I think it’s fair to say that the best 16 teams will decide the winner of ECL 11 Pro.

As brutal as it is, the season is now over for half of the teams in the Pro division. Many feel disappointed, others may have found courage when they noticed they have what it takes to compete at the Pro level. It’s now time for these teams to start preparing for the upcoming season with a brand new league structure which will make the competition even harder. Now it’s time to focus on our gladiators on stage. Ladies and gentlemen, here are the matchups of the ECL 11 Pro playoff round 1: 

(1)  GOONS vs Sack Brothers  (8)

When the season started it was clear that the reinforced GOONS were going to challenge for the top spots in group 2 and they surely didn’t disappoint. GOONS won the group and were the best team of the entire division with most points and only five losses in the regular season. Former JYP Jyvaskyla player @kriketski17, who joined the team right before the season started has made a massive impact for his team: 69 points and an unbelievable 296 hits in 30 games! However the success hasn’t been only on Kriketsi’s shoulders. After a bad start and confusion on the transfer market, pretty much everything has gone right for GOONS. Goalkeeper @SanteriAK47 (santerichristian) was the best keeper of the regular season with most wins and an 83.33% save percentage in 30 games. This is also thanks to both of the defenders, experienced @Miika(MiiQu81-) and rising star @viba2008 who have found the perfect chemistry at the back end. Also other attackers @xKeskitalo and @pikkuroger scored over 60 points this season so it was a very complete display from the whole team.  

I like to believe that I wasn’t the only one who underestimated Sack Brothers at the start of the season. The former Lite champions didn’t have the easiest preseason after losing two of their leading players before the season started. Sack Brothers proved everyone wrong right from the beginning of the season, winning seven out of their first ten games. After the midpoint of the season it seemed that the course had shifted when the team had a seven game losing streak but they managed to end the regular season in style and took the last playoff spot in group 1. @snippystatue was the second player in the regular season who managed to score 40 goals and new signing @Jjomppa who was playing in the Neo division last season has made an impressive leap to the higher stages. Captain @Datupeijooni(Datzonee) continues to be the player that brings the balance between attack and defense and at the back end defenders @Tuulimylly91 and @Persusta95 / @urkk1 have done convincing work and helped their team to gather some crucial points along the way. @mikeruud who was the best goalkeeper in ECL 10 Lite has been sharing the time in net with @Esko-etikka and it will be interesting to see who will be the starting goalie when the series begins.     

Prediction: GOONS will start the series as firm favorites. They’ve had the best offense, best defense and best goaltender. However Sack Brothers have already achieved something that only a few could have known and this will put all the pressure on GOONS side. Both teams have an excellent powerplay (>30% powerplay efficiency) which means every penalty could be decisive. Sack Brothers have also proved in the last season that it doesn’t matter if it’s a regular season or playoff game, they can keep their own level. This is a question mark on GOONS side, since the team is heading to the first playoffs with the current roster. Despite all of this it’s really hard to see GOONS losing the series. Both of these teams want to play free flowing attacking hockey and that is where higher division experience of GOONS players will give the team an upper hand. Whatever the result is, this is going to be a fun series to watch. And if Sack Brothers could cause the upset, boy, that would be something to be marked in history books with big markings. GOONS will win the series against Sack Brothers 4-1.
 

(1)  Tunnel Vision vs Nordic Stars  (8)

Tunnel Vision had a rough start to the season. When we were closing in on the midpoint of the season it’s fair to say that the team was heavily underachieving. Then something clicked and the team started to fulfill the high expectations set to them. The last half of the regular season was a complete Tunnel Vision show in group 1 and in the final round they were able to secure the top spot of the standings. Left winger @BensaPoju(Jerskayy) who was marked as the player to watch at season preview had a successful regular season and he has been the most lethal player for his team with 36 goals and 69 points in 30 games. In the end also his linemates on attack @Pikkardz and @Sokkelo__ were able to reach their own level and finish the regular season with +60 points. Defender @tombo_02 has played very well and his defensive partner @Frilander has filled the spot that was left behind by @Eemil with great success. The goalies of the team have been splitting the playing time quite equally for now, but I believe it’s the team captain @Erholtzi who will be the starting goalie to the series. It took some time to reach the full team potential that these great individuals have, but now they look unstoppable.  

Here we are again, it’s another playoff season for Nordic Stars. In recent seasons, the playoffs have been very unfortunate for the Nordic Stars as the team’s season has always ended in the first round despite the excellent playing in the regular season. This time Nordic Stars struggled a bit as they had to go all the way to the last round of the regular season to win the spot in the playoffs. Could this be a good sign? It’s not a surprise that Captain @Vire30 has been the best attacker for his team this season with 54 points in 30 games. Other attackers @Iltapeli(apetttaja) and @Jerax13 aren’t that far in the stats table but it will be about much more than just finding goals for Nordic Stars this time. If the team wishes to cause a major surprise in the first round, defenders @Katunarski and @kikiukko will need all the help they get from the attackers. Also goalkeeper @Konu(xBenuu) will have to put forth his best performances so far to help his team to get rid of the playoff curse. The potential is surely there and the individual talent in this team is really high as well. Especially the last ten games of the regular season went really well for the team so the confidence is high and the winning form has been found. 

Prediction: The pressure of winning will of course be on Tunnel Vision’s side but the team managed to overcome some serious troubles already during the regular season and this should have prepared their mental side for the playoffs as well. If Nordic Stars want to win the series, they will have to focus on disciplined defending and effective counter-attacking.  However I can’t see Nordic Stars playing full trap-turtle kind of hockey so the players with the more defensive duties in the team will play a huge role for the team's success. Tunnel Vision has lots of playoff experience and they are a really complete team in every sector of the game. Only point that could be seen as a weakness for Tunnel Vision is their faceoff winning percentage (45.62%). If Nordic Stars could take advantage of this and gather a couple of goals with offensive faceoff tactics, things could get interesting. Nordic Stars have also taken quite many penalties in the regular season and this is what both teams should focus on. This is probably the hardest series for Nordic Stars in their near ECL history. Tunnel Vision is one of the clearest favourites for the cup and they are in excellent form. That's why: Tunnel Vision will win the series against Nordic Stars 4-0
 

(2)  Djurgarden Hockey vs Blackdawgs  (7)

Djurgarden Hockey was one of the teams that took the biggest steps forward compared to their last season In ECL 10 Pro where the team was left out of the playoffs by five points margin. Balance is the word to describe the reason behind the success. Team has been great in every part of the game this season and their playing style is going to be really suitable for playoff hockey as well. Former Almost Famous and KOVA Esports defender @jahajaha93 has brought the experience and confidence to Djurgarden Hockey’s back end which has helped his team to become one of the best defensive teams in the league. Stability at the back has also given his defensive pair and team captain @Jungledonk more freedom in offense, which has led him being one of the most effective defensemen in the league with 37 points in 30 games. One of the players in the attacking trio that deserves a special mention is the center @LordStanley46_, who started his career in ECL 10 Neo with champions Jarnkaminerna and is now heading to the ECL 11 Pro playoffs in his second ECL season! He surely has lots to thank for in wingers @Birkedal96 and @amadee21, who both are also playing their best season right now. Goalkeeper @Sorsa103 has been at his own consistent level the whole season and must be enjoying playing behind the current lineup.   

Blackdawgs have had a pretty similar season so far as last time in ECL 10 Pro where the team finished 6th after the regular season. Last time they were able to beat TIKI TALK in the first round of the playoffs but this time they will face a team with a really different style of playing. The team roster has changed a lot from last season and the lineup seems to still be finding it's final form. @TheArska (XxProArskaxX) who was the team's leading point scorer last season hasn’t been included in the playing squad lately. Winger @Kucherov86 (Jalkkin-) has moved to defense and defender @Mistertyppo95 is now a center. @James(Jamechkin) has moved from his center position to right winger. These kinds of changes always raises questions - is the team confident and ready for the upcoming games, but when you watch the results from the last part of the regular season it has clearly had a positive effect on the teams playing. @dzouvi has been their star on offense with 53 points in 30 games and former HUIPPUPASSI defender @Mikax222 is having the best season of his career. Captain and goalkeeper @Serg1vratar has made some brave changes during the season. At Least it is clear now that if the lineup changes are the way to turn the series into Blackdawgs' favour, they have the courage and ability to do so.

Prediction: This will be the first time for Djurgarden Hockey in the playoffs. However, as said before the team is already playing with a style that could lead Djurgarden Hockey go far this season. Blackdawgs have gathered twice the amount of penalty minutes compared to their opponent and this is something that should be noted in both camps. As both teams are a real threat in powerplay it’s clear that there won’t be room for stupid penalties. If Djurgarden Hockey can continue playing with the stability they have been playing all season, it’s going to be a long series for Blackdawgs finding their way through their defense. On the other hand I see no major reasons why Blackdawgs couldn’t repeat the same outcome as in the last season, if they can find the balance and chemistry in the lineup after some shaking up. This series will not be an easy one for neither of these teams but I believe that Djurgarden Hockey has more quality as a team and more confidence after an outstanding regular season, therefore: Djurgarden Hockey will advance to the next round with a 4-2 score.

(2)  Inter Iceland vs RCTIC  (7)

The biggest surprise of the season so far - Inter Iceland has been phenomenal. The team that was called Shooting Stars in ECL 10 Pro finished in 12th place back then and was left out of the playoffs by a large margin. This time Inter Iceland finished 2nd in group 1 and without the bad period at the end of the season they would have won the group. Left winger @Stefan_397 has been in flames this season with 71 points in 30 games and his fellow attackers @Fire_019 and @x Holtbeast (xReuTschNer98x) have also enjoyed +50 points each in the regular season. Inter Iceland’s playbook relies on fast attack playing which sometimes may leave defenders a bit vulnerable. It seems that the arrival of experienced defender @xLVxRitchey has had a positive effect on the whole team and with his defensive partners @Drew-LeBlanc19 and @Charly Inter Iceland has been able to attack without a fear of deadly counter attacks. Team captain and goaltender @PLA77NER (Hasek-39--) has been among the best goalkeepers this season with a 80.23% save percentage in 30 games. If the team can improve their powerplay and penalty killing stats in the playoffs, Inter Iceland can continue surprising teams and make this season one to remember for them.

RCTIC was promoted from the Lite division before the season started and they have truly shown that NHLGamer staff made the correct decision. There was no doubt that this team could challenge for the playoff spot this season and they didn’t disappoint. @Hullued has been their most effective player so far with 60 points in 30 games. RCTIC made some changes in the last part of the regular season where center Hullued and left winger @meicci switched places and the team ended the season with a six game winning streak. Right winger @Pursuitti has also had a good season and his experience from Pro playoffs will be valuable for the team. Something that is certain is that you don’t want to let the defender @layout get shots on net. The captain has buried the puck with an incredible 44.4% shot efficiency from the point. I believe that @Mameluck88 who is currently playing his best season so far will be the starting LD for his team but @Zoueli will be ready to jump in if changes are needed. Experienced @Vaporik will most likely be the starting goalie for RCTIC. He has the past experience of successful playoff run with Almost Famous in ECL 6 Pro and he’s been great this season with his 82,7% save percentage in 22 games.  

Prediction: This will be a tricky one. Inter Iceland has been excellent but their last rounds of the regular season were pretty bad. RCTIC was able to finish the season with a winning streak but their opponents were from the bottom of the table. Inter Iceland masters the fast counter attacking hockey and they have been able to win against teams that have really disciplined defence such as RCTIC. On the other hand RCTIC has shown especially in the FCL playoffs that they can be an excellent playoff team. It will also be a battle between two excellent goalies so I won’t expect many goals scored in this series. One thing that must be pointed out is that RCTIC has played only one ECL matchup in the Middle European server this season while Inter Iceland has got used to the ping difference between two matches. I’m pretty sure this will only have a minor effect on the results and it will be a tight series regardless of the circumstances. I believe this series will go all the way to a game seven where RCTIC will continue their good playoff form and be crowned as the ‘’Kings of Ice’’. RCTIC will win the series 4-3.              
 

(3)  Herlev Eagles vs Rookie Mistakes  (6) 

At the start of the season it was known that Herlev Eagles were going to be way better than they were back in ECL 10 Pro. The team took the league by storm, including a 13 game winning streak in their campaign and at the end of the season their player to watch @vibholm10 was crowned as the best goal scorer with an astonishing 44 goals in 30 games. He and their other winger @Spearzz_ been fed all season by center @Dreamickie who was the best playmaker of the season with 51 assists in 30 games. Goalkeeper @jubens_ has also played a good season with an around 80% save percentage in 30 games but the questions lies in their defense. It’s really interesting to see how the RD position will be filled in the playoffs. @oSandello has been the clear first choice for the LD position but the RD spot is shared with three different players. The last part of the regular season was honestly quite poor from the team and Herlev Eagles still have work to do returning to their earlier form. Despite the bad ending for the season, Herlev Eagles is still one of the best attacking teams in the whole league and at least they won’t become overconfident before the playoffs.

Rookie Mistakes were really close to getting to the playoffs already in their first season in ECL 10 Pro and this time they did it with style. It’s really impressive that all five skaters have had over 30 points this season. It means that it’s not enough to shut down only the attackers when playing against Rookie Mistakes when the defenders @Patsberg_ and @LE1PAKONE (NordZman_) have the skill to finish on the rush as well. Attacking trio @Flopper71, @xColeslaww and @Niskalaukaus have been playing together since the beginning of Rookie Mistakes and they have found that chemistry on ice that every team is after. Their point totals this season might not be as good as those of their opponents but it’s also because Rookie Mistakes defenders are often involved in their offensive play. Goalkeeper @Ilezki_‘s numbers in net aren’t the best in the league but this is due to the fact the team focuses heavily on attacking which can cause some difficult counter attacks for their goalie. However the numbers have been good enough to lead the team to the playoffs. Rookie Mistakes' powerplay has also been excellent this season and they are currently in good form.         

Prediction: I believe that this series will be one to watch for people that like to see attacking hockey at its best and lots of goals. Two very similar teams go head to head in their first Pro playoffs and neither of these teams want to park the bus. Both teams rely heavily on attack so we will see coast to coast action from the very beginning to the final buzzer. Both teams want to avoid time in the penalty box since neither of the teams have been that great on penalty killing. That's why I believe that powerplay will play a major role in this series and the team that is able to figure out how to keep their own net clean during it, will have the upper hand. Both of these teams can be happy how their season has gone so far and there won’t be any extra pressure on either side. It will be all about adapting to your opponents game and the team that has more quality on finishing will win the series. I believe this time it’s @vibholm10 and his friends in Herlev Eagles, who will win the series 4-2.  
 

(3)  Enigma vs Company of Geeks  (6)

Enigma’s season has been pretty similar to that of Tunnel Vision. Although Enigma had an even worse start and from the first ten games the team was able to win only three. Enigma made some adjustments to their roster as ECL 10 Pro champion @laitineen64 joined the team as starting centerman and @Ojamoska transferred to Elite team SJ Gaming. Since then the team's game has been reaching the potential that was expected before the season. Captain @Nieppii has continued where he left off last season being the best point scorer for his team. @laitineen64‘s arrival has been excellent as he has gathered 55 points in only 24 games. Right winger @sannteri might be a couple of points behind his linemates at the moment but his influence will be important in the playoffs as the last seasons have proved. After a rough start also defender @Makeaxl has reached his own level and with his,  @Tappu‘s and @zNico‘s help Enigma has been able to bring back the balance in defense that will help them win games night after night. @Pirtsa89, who is playing his first season in Pro seems to be the starting goalie for now, but I bet @Jaakkomusta is ready for duty if he’s called upon.               

Company of Geeks are playing their best season in a long time. They were among the teams that were able to improve their game significantly between the Pro seasons. Last time in ECL 10 Pro, the team had to fight for a Pro spot in the relegation series so compared to that, this season has been a massive success for them. Right winger @oggezed has been a playmaking machine this season with 50 assists and center @Jesus is the best goal scorer for his team. Adding the young and gifted winger @BlazEm0de-- (xDomin-) to their lineup has given the team a needed boost in the offensive zone and the team was one of the best goal scoring teams in the whole league. On the downside this hasn’t been the easiest season for defenders @Viktorhall, @Kingen_86and goalkeeper @Varabajare (eCeleste31) as the team has conceded the most goals compared to other teams in the playoffs. Team stats say that Company of Geeks hasn’t been able to score on powerplay but this seems to be because the captains haven’t added the results correctly on the website. The same reason is behind the excellent penalty killing percent as well. Therefore the opposing team shouldn’t focus on these numbers too much. 

Prediction: Company of Geeks needs to figure out their defensive game if they want to challenge talented Enigma. On the other side, Enigma needs to make sure that they won’t start a scoring contest with Company of Geeks since the team is really dangerous if the game starts flowing from coast to coast. Last season Enigma started playing their best game when the playoffs started and the same is expected to happen again. The playoff experience and current good form should be enough for Enigma to take the series. However Company of Geeks have already made a great run this season which will give them a massive confidence boost for the start of the series. If Company of Geeks could start the series strong, continue punishing their opponents with dangerous counter attacks from takeaways and find the balance to keep their own net clean, it could become a very challenging series for Enigma. I still believe that individual talent and the way those individuals have blended to a team during the season will result in Enigma winning the series comfortably. Enigma will advance to the next round with the score 4-1.
 

(4)  Vaxjo Lakers vs Frosty Kiekko-Vantaa  (5)

Vaxjo Lakers has had a solid season so far. They have been the better team in most of the games and many of the defeats they have faced have come as a surprise in matchups where the team has been clearly the better side either in the first or in the second game. I like to believe that Vaxjo Lakers haven’t shown their full potential just yet and their opponents should be prepared for this. Right winger @Kattenj has been the MVP of the season so far with 74 points in 30 games. He has found the perfect chemistry with @EDHOLMINHO and former Farjestad BK player @eBasstian on attack and especially on the powerplay this trio has been extremely lethal with a triangle setup around the net. Vaxjo Lakers have a stunning 46,34 % success rate on powerplay so the opponents must avoid penalties at all costs. @Hockeyjohannes has been the backbone of the defence and goalkeeper @MrAllsvenskan serves as the final lock in the net. We will see who will play the RD position as @Samuel edholm (EDHOLMEN3) and @Gustafsson7 have been splitting the game time so far. This shouldn’t affect too much on the teams playing since both guys are having a good season.  

Frosty Kiekko-Vantaa’s season has been a mixed one. The first half of the season was mostly victorious but the team faced some troubles at the end of the season. Still they were able to secure the playoff spot comfortably at the end of the regular season. All three attackers @Ikavalko, @JesseL2002 and @Naikou88 have had a solid +40 points season and also both defenders @Crisu_rottisand @MCH_98 have been able to gather a good amount of points during the season. Frosty Kiekko-Vantaa relies on good team performance, there won’t be a goal scoring festival on ice when this team is playing and that can also be seen in the stats table. Frosty Kiekko-Vantaa’s style of hockey will serve them well in the playoffs and at times it can get really frustrating for the opposing team to find holes in FKV’s disciplined defense and that is when the Wolves will strike back. Despite the relatively low individual stats on attack, Frosty Kiekko-Vantaa has the quality to punish their opponent if they lose their focus and I believe that is what the team is aiming for. The team has two excellent goalies @Kaapro666 (X_KABA_X) and @SpiderRoyal and my guess is that X_KABA_X , who is currently playing his best season in net, will be the starting goalie for the series.      

Prediction: Here we have two teams that are in completely different forms at the moment. Vaxjo Lakers had a great run in the last part of the season while Frosty Kiekko-Vantaa was struggling a bit. However both teams ended their season comfortably in the middle of playoff seeding and the margins will be extremely small in this matchup. Both teams are really balanced and stacked with individual talent. Vaxjo Lakers powerplay will definitely be one of the deciding factors and points to follow in this series. If Frosty Kiekko-Vantaa can succeed in penalty killing they can take away one of the biggest weapons Vaxjo Lakers have had this season although this alone won’t be enough to turn the series as neither of the teams have had problems staying out of the penalty box. Both teams desperately want to win the series as both teams have a pretty equal chance for winning the cup this season. Predicting this series is extremely difficult so I have to trust that Vaxjo Lakers will benefit from their current form and start the series with a couple of tight wins which will give them a mental edge over their opponents and carry them through to the second round. Therefore Vaxjo Lakers will win the series 4-2.     

(4)  Pata Hellalla vs ZSC Esports  (5) 

Pata Hellalla did what was expected already in the season preview. Last season they managed to stay in the league by winning the relegation series and since then the team has been able to constantly improve their game and now it has rewarded them with a 4th place in the regular season and a place in the playoffs. Fast straight forward hockey has suited the team and it’s players very well and with the right mindset this team can be a really tricky opponent. From the players of the team, defender @JOHTAJAVIRTANEN deserves to be singled out with an incredible 39 points in 30 games which gave him a second place in defenders stats in regular season. Center @Tetrejev is the scoring leader for his team with 51 points in 30 games and both wingers @siiderihai and @vizka13 have had a solid +40 points season as well. Captain @kungenkurwa also has 30 points in the bag so it has been an excellent season not only for the team but for every player personally as well. Goalkeeper @Nixa_da_fck has had another good season with a 80.18% save percentage as he continues taking steps forward in his career. It is great to see how much a team can improve between seasons without any major changes in the roster. Pata Hellalla should serve as an example for many teams in the community.        

Since getting the promotion to Pro division ZSC Esports has been a familiar team in the playoffs. In the previous seasons the journey has ended in the first round, but the opponent has always been almost the hardest possible for them. This time they won’t be facing Vesa Pompa or Enigma but winning won’t be any easier despite that as they will face another heavily offensive-oriented team. @Alex28 (I__LX__I) has played the best season of his career with 68 points in 30 games and he should be marked with extra care. Center and captain @Original-SnuS has had another good season and on the right wing @Freeman7187 will most likely be the starting player despite missing 10 games compared to other attackers. Defender @Toneee9 was one of the best defenders in ECL 10 Lite and he has continued the good form in Pro division as well with 30 points in 26 games. @Haldeem will continue being his solid self at the RD position. Every attacker who has played against this guy knows that there seems to be now way around him so especially Vizka- will have lots of work ahead. @afc_Tschitsch will most likely be the starting goalie for the team while @burban26 will have to wait for his turn. ZSC Esports had the most hits after GOONS in the regular season so Pata Hellalla should keep their heads up. 

Prediction: Both teams have had a pretty similar season so far winning most of their games without any major winning or losing streaks. ZSC Esports has had twice as many penalties as Pata Hellalla this season and their penalty killing percentage is quite low. If Pata Hellalla could improve their powerplay to the playoffs this could give them an advantage but also if ZSC Esports could stay away from the penalty box they should be the stronger team in the 5v5 game. Just like in the Inter Iceland vs RCTIC series, servers will play a minor role in how the series will go but it can’t be used as an excuse since both teams are in a similar position. ZSC Esports has scored more goals than Pata Hellalla this season and conceded less, so the stats will be on ZSC Esports' side at the start of the series. I believe that ZSC Esports have more hunger for success since the past seasons have ended in the first round of the playoffs for them, while Pata Hellalla has already made great work finding their way out of the relegation zone to the playoffs. That’s why ZSC Esports will win the series 4-2                    

As the old saying is: ‘’Anything can happen in the playoffs’’. It’s already a great achievement to play your way to the playoffs but now we will truly see who is the best of the best. We hope you enjoy playing or watching the games. Play hard and fair, respect your opponents and have fun!

The ECL 11 Lite season has progressed to Round 3 and eight exciting matchups are to be played in Best-of-seven series. Most of the series look very even and in at least a few of them the chance for game 7 action is likely. None of the series should be lopsided in the sense that we'd be seeing a sweep. There are some surprising teams in round 3, which begs the question: have they already reached their full potential or will we continue to see upsets moving forward?

(1)  Bjorkloven Esport - Golden Nights  (52)

First seed Bjorkloven has in impressive fashion marched on to Round 3. Golden Nights have - against all odds - reached this far as an underdog. They eliminated GIFU Hockey and Hokurit, which ate two very strong teams and sure are ready to eliminate a third team of an even higher caliber. One of the most interesting series in Round 3. Bjorkloven has a material edge but Golden Nights have earned their great underdog boosted confidence. 

Prediction: Golden Nights have played two outstanding rounds but in Round 3 their brave fight will not be enough to beat one of the biggest title favorites. Bjorkloven progresses to the quarterfinals 4-2.

(2)  ECDC Memmingen eSports vs Oton Letkutemppu  (51)

We're going in with a similar outlook as to the Bjorkloven - Golden Nights series. Memmingen is the favorite by a landslide, but Letkutemppu can surely surprise, as they have shown already by outmaneuvering Calzone HC and Central Hockey Canucks. As usual, anything can happen but it's doubtful that we'd see yet another upset by Letkutemppu.

Prediction: ECDC Memmingen eSports advances 4-1.

(3)  Nearbird Fighters vs Hotbox   (42)

Nearbird Fighters had a relatively easy first round but got to properly test their form in the second against Tic Tac Toes, which undoubtedly makes them prepared for any challenge moving forward. Hotbox is coming in with the clear underdog status and will need to elevate even further if they are looking to take down the Russian powerhouse.

Prediction: Nearbird Fighters advances 4-1. 

(6)  Ringette HC vs NOVA  (29)

Ringette HC has gone undefeated through this seasons playoffs but are in for their toughest challenge yet when clashing with recent RCL champions NOVA, who also have a decent record suffering only two losses in the playoffs so far. This series will most likely extend a bit longer than these teams are used to this far into the playoffs. The recent RCL title will boost NOVA but perhaps there's some exhaustion from that series?

Prediction: Game 7 is needed. Ringette HC with their high standard performance level will advance to the quarterfinals 4-3.

(8)  Exerceo vs Beast Hockey  (28)

Beast Hockey eliminated a strong team in RoKi Esports in an exciting series to start their playoff run and had an easier task beating AfroDunk by a sweep in the second round. Exerceo has a convincing 8-1 record from the previous rounds and have the material to go far in these playoffs if they can stay consistent. 

Prediction: Exerceo is simply too strong although Beast Hockey continues their good performances. Exerceo advances 4-1.
 

(15)  Lekstugan HC vs BoxinElite  (24)

BoxinElite were forced to a seventh game in round 2 against Tequila Sunrise, which might have caused some exhaustion but on the other hand gave them time to hone their play in a competitive environment. Lekstugan has cleared their series a little easier but of course is a strong team and has beaten two good teams quite easily so far, and with that claims a favorite staple in this matchup too. The depth of Lekstugans roster overpowers that of BoxinElite, who seemed to be at the edge of their potential already last round. Despite having the chance to overcome that obstacle, it would be miraculous if Lekstugan would not be the one to move on from this series.

Prediction: Lekstugan HC wins 4-2

(16)  Sinister vs Grenoble BDL Esport  (22)

Sinister eliminated Lulea Hockey in the first round and Birka Vikings in the second, thus moving on with a record of 8-3, whereas their opponents Grenoble BDL Esport have done exactly the same - against different opposition of course. Grenoble BDL Esport eliminated TuTo Esports in the first round which was a minor upset. This is series definitely has minimal margins and a game 7 is a serious possibility. Sinister is just a slight favorite but like we have seen in this seasons playoffs, the predictions have failed us more than once.

Prediction: Sinister 4-2

(18)  Sjukstugan vs Old Farts  (19)

Both teams have continued their strong rising form where they left off in the regular season. This is an extremely even series with microscopically narrow margins, between two of the most experienced teams in the league. Sjukstugan probably gains the slight favorite position because they have kept a higher level throughout the season in general, but Old Farts is nearly in as good form as Sjukstugan and can outperform if they find their groove.

Prediction: Game 7 needed. Old Farts advances 4-3.

We hope all of you had a safe new years celebration and are as excited as us to get started on a successful 2021!

With that, the first round of the ECL 11 Lite Playoffs has also been capped off with a bunch of exciting action both in the rearview and in the future matchups. Round one was underdogs galore, as an unusually high amount of lower seeded teams managed to surprise the favorites heading into the series - one of the major upsets was the elimination of Spirit at seed #4. Taavetin Starat advanced to Round 2 and challenges Bjorkloven, who are the #1 seed and will be the ones to beat. Tic Tac Toes also eliminated one of the big favorites, when the experienced and skill packed roster of MUKIMIEHET were sent home. Several other underdogs also saw an extension to their season, such as Golden Nights, Syndrome, Nordic Nosebleed and Grilli Tulille to name a few.

All of the hassle in the first round will surely be throwing off some predictions for the second and add to the excitement of it all. As said, lots of underdogs are still in the race but the prevailing forces are still the very dominant ones continuing their strong runs of form. Some teams that succeeded in the regular season that are advancing to round 2 of playoff contention included for example Bjorkloven Esport, ECDC Memmingen eSports, Nearbird Fighters and Ringette HC, out of which the three latter managed to sweep their first round opposition.

With the nitty gritty out of the way, we will have time for a few quick previews of some matchups to keep an eye on in the second round of action:

(1)  Bjorkloven Esport - Taavetin Starat (61)
Regular season sensation Bjorkloven Esport goes up against playoff sensation (so far) Taavetin Starat - the two clashed in the group stage already with the double header yielding full points for the Swedes, while Starat only managed to walk away with a consolation point from an overtime loss. We're expecting Bjorkloven to bring their best as usual, but they cannot underestimate their opponent, as Starat has really gotten their game going after a tough first half of the season. The recipe for success in this series is simple, Bjorkloven needs to continue doing what they have been doing so well all season which is finding the connection between their forwards up front, whereas Starat need to find a way to keep scoring to a minimum and utilize the chances they are given.

Prediction: Bjorkloven Esports advances 4-1
 

(3)  Nearbird Fighters - Tic Tac Toes  (58)
Nearbird Fighters has been one of the better teams in the Russian scene for quite some time already and have in fact been grinding away in the Lite division since ECL 5 under the watchful eye of captain @Hair. The team is on a hot streak having swept their first round opponent and finding a convincing scoring touch while doing so. However, there's no question about the fact that opposition will get significantly tougher now. Tic Tac Toes seem to be waking up like a bear our of hibernation after barely making the playoffs out of the group stage but finally outclassing MUKIMIEHET in the first round. The team full of 1v1 virtuosos has translated their skill well onto the 6v6 ice and with the lead of @Artuzio, we know that they can go far this season.

Prediction: Tic Tac Toes advances 4-2
 

(8)  Exerceo - Grilli Tulille  (54)
Exerceo looked to be one of the stronger teams heading into the season with several players having experience in big roles from higher divisions, and they have performed up to par this far into the season. In this series, they will be up for a challenge against a group of guys who definitely know how to play, but are perhaps more used to putting a ball into the net as opposed to the puck that we all know is the central object in the game of hockey. In their first round matchups, Exerceo convincingly defeated Handu Pumpulla, whereas Grilli Tulille completed an incredible comeback ultimately defeating Hammarby Hockey in a game 7. Having built all that momentum propelled even further by a good social media hype is perhaps what GT needs to launch them into the next round. 

Prediction: Exerceo advances 4-1

(12)  Central Hockey Canucks - Oton Letkutemppu  (51)
We're in for an interesting battle between two very different teams in this one. Central Hockey Canucks is one of those teams that have played in incredibly consistent season, going rather unnoticed just behind the front of the pack, whereas Oton Letkutemppu is coming in as a clear underdog, but with all the chances to cause an upset - the experienced team has shown before that they have what it takes to go all the way (ECL 8 Lite champions). The Canucks are a team that has been gathering their forces in the Lite and Neo divisions as well as the GCL over several seasons already and now is the time that they seem adamant on taking the next step. As their form seems right now, it would be a surprise if the Canucks would be at the losing end of a 7 game series. 

Prediction: Central Hockey Canucks advances 4-2

(18)  Sjukstugan - Northern Legacy eSports  (39)
Swedish legends Sjukstugan are in for a challenge and have to prove that despite facing adversity, they still have the mojo that has been their bread and butter throughout the years. Having one of the deepest rosters in the division will be beneficial in a tightly contested series and that is something that Sjukstugan will have to utilize once their first line of offense starts feeling the additional pressure from the opposing defense. Nothern Legacy eSports is a team that does defense extremely well. The somewhat new roster took some time finding their game in the regular season but in the hands of experienced captain @Tinkesakara, the team seems to have found their identity as of late. Having shut down Black Sharks in the first round, NLE now moves on to tougher opposition and will need to up their game considerably if they are looking to go even further.

Prediction: Sjukstugan advances 4-2

(27)  AfroDunk - Beast Hockey  (28)
This one should be a series that can go either way and pretty much any little factor could tip the scales in one direction or the other. The two teams played very similar regular seasons statistically, with decent scoring and defensive averages, while keeping their special teams at a sufficient level. Also based on their regular season play, the difference between the two seems to be that Beast Hockey is more eager to take the body, which might turn into an advantage if that weapon is utilized correctly. Beast Hockey completed an impressive comeback from a 3-1 losing situation against RoKi Esports, which could be the momentum they need to win the series.

Prediction: Beast Hockey advances 4-3

As I’m sure many of you have noticed, we have had a record number of teams sign up for the current season of ECL. Whilst growth is good, it certainly comes with some challenges, and our ECL division structure has certainly had to undergo some impromptu changes over the years to account for this exponential increase. Indeed, talk about adding a new division to reduce the strain placed on those that already exist has been a debate that has been raging for a while now, as such we hope that an update to the ECL structure, as well as the very system in which teams are promoted, will help satiate your desires as we embark into truly unchartered waters for NHL 6v6 esports.

Please note that the changes to the promotions and relegations will be effective immediately.

Hitting the ice for ECL 12 will be an all-new division which will be going by the name of ‘ECL Core’. This division will aim to take up most of the strain of the ECL structure by acting as the place in which the main bulk of teams will play. Position-wise, Core will be placed in between Lite and Neo, acting as the main starting off point for teams that want to try their hand at climbing the ECL ladder. In terms of raw numbers, we are looking for Core to field a division high 128 teams. This means that we can tighten up Lite above it, condensing the skill gap between teams competing there. What this means is that ECL will starting with season 12 host the following amount of teams in each division:

• Elite – 16 [16]
• Pro – 32 [48]
• Lite – 64 [112]
• Core – 128 [240]
• Neo – Open

Square brackets [*] denote the aggregate number of teams within the ECL system.

As always, Neo will remain open to all teams and will not have a cap imposed upon it due to the intention being that the division in question should be available at all times to teams that are new to the 6v6 game mode, and would otherwise feel discouraged from applying to enter the ‘more serious’ division in Core.

As already outlined, Core will be placed between the divisions of Lite and Neo. One of the problems that this causes is that the number of teams playing in Lite will be greatly reduced, and with that brings up the question of how to fairly allocate teams. Therefore, with that in mind here is the solution we have arrived at:

As Lite will (for ECL 12) have a cap of 64 teams playing within it, we have decided that the top-32 Lite playoff teams from the current season (i.e. teams that make it to the second round) will maintain their spot within Lite automatically – although with that said, it can still be viewed as a promotion all things considered.

However, this still leaves 32 spots that need to be filled. To remedy this, we have decided to run a 64-team qualifier in which 32 teams will claim their spot in Lite for ECL 12. Teams that are invited to take part are as follows: Bottom-32 Lite playoff teams (i.e. those that lost in their first round matchup), the top-20 non-playoff Lite teams, the top-8 playoff Neo teams, as well as four ‘Wildcard’ spots.

These 64 teams will then be placed into eight groups of eight teams based on the following seeding:

• Bottom-32 Lite playoff teams (#1-#32)
• Top-20 non-playoff Lite teams (#33-#52)
• Top-8 Neo playoff teams (#53-#60)
• Wildcard* teams (#61-#64)

*In order to be eligible to compete as a wildcard team, your team must meet the following quotas:

• Have 3 former Elite and/or Pro starters
• Have the remainder of the team be former Lite starting players.

A starter is defined as having played 16 or more games in the ECL 11 season, or 20 or more games in the ECL 10 season.

It should be noted that the Wildcard spots can either be filled by solely special* teams, remaining non-playoff Lite teams, or a combination of the two – with that said however, the special* teams take priority and if there are four eligible for admission into the qualifier, then the non-playoff Lite teams that finished 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th will not be selected. If more than four special* teams should be eligible for participation into the qualifier, NHLGamer staff will be making the final selections based on player history and perceived skill level.

Once placed within these eight groups, each team will play all of their opponents twice in the usual (Home-Away) fashion, meaning that each team will finish the group stage portion of the qualifier with 14 games played. Teams finishing in the top-2 of each respective group will secure their spot in Lite for ECL 12, whilst teams finishing in the bottom-3 of each respective group will be eliminated from the second stage. As 12 more spots need to be filled at this point, a second stage will begin where the middle-3 teams from each group (i.e. those that finished 3rd, 4th, and 5th) will reseeded against each other using the tiebreakers mentioned in the rulebook, with each team being matched up against an opponent in which they will have to play a BO5. The teams victorious in this final stage will lock in their spot for Lite in ECL 12, whilst those that did not qualify will be placed in Core along with those that finished in the bottom-3 in the group stage element of the qualifier.

In the spirit of including an all new division to the ECL structure we feel that updating the promotion logic between divisions would be advisable – not just from the perspective of refreshing the system, but to give you the players a more concrete setup, especially as the systems we have been using have been fairly varied and plastic.

First up we have Pro and Lite. These two divisions mark the mid-way point of the climb into Elite and are the epicentre of where the game goes from just being a hobby or pastime, to something serious, in most cases.

From this point on, prior to every ECL season there will be a 20-team qualifier. This qualifier will be used to decide which teams are relegated, and which teams are promoted into Pro.

Before we go into detail regarding the structure of the qualifiers, it should be mentioned that Pro teams who finished 15th and 16th in their group will be relegated straight to Lite (i.e. they will not be invited to the qualifier). Additionally, the top-3 Lite teams (i.e. the champions, runners-up, and bronze medal victor) will be promoted directly into Pro. With that out of the way, let’s get into the nitty gritty of the all-new promotion structure.

Making up the bulk of qualifier competitors will be the Pro teams that finished 12th, 13th and 14th from both groups, as well as the top-6 remaining teams from the Lite playoffs (i.e. 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th). Joining these twelve teams will be the top-4 teams from the Core playoffs (i.e. champion, runners-up, and semifinalists). Finally, to round out the competitors to an even 20 we have four ‘wildcard’ spots. These spots can then either be filled by solely special* teams, remaining Lite playoff teams, or a combination of the two – with that said however, the special* teams take priority and if there are four eligible for admission into the qualifier, then the Lite playoff teams that finished 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th will not be selected.

*As ECLs only occur once a calendar year, and twice per each NHL year, we feel that a balance has to be struck between affording upper echelon teams (i.e. Elite and Pro) the ability to reform in a different setting under a different team banner, as well as being ‘fair’ for teams that have worked their way up through the ECL division structure – as such, under this system we feel that balance has been struck. Of course, we would love to hear your opinions regarding this. In order to qualify as a ‘special’ team you must hit one of these two quotas:

• Three former Elite starters
• Four former Pro starters

A starter is defined as having played 16 or more games in the ECL 11 season, or 20 or more games in the ECL 10 season.

With the ‘who’ out of the way so to speak, let’s get into ‘how’ the qualifiers will be conducted.

The twenty teams will be split into four groups of five based on the following seeding:

Once the groups have been decided, each team will then play each of their opponents in the usual (Home-Away) double matchup. Once this stage has been completed, the top-3 teams from each group will progress to the second stage, meanwhile the teams finishing 4^th and 5^th in each group will be eliminated.

Progressing on to the second stage we have a bit of a reshuffle of sorts, as the four group of five will be combined into two groups of six. It will not be a ‘full’ reshuffle however, as teams will progress with the other two progressing teams from their group. Furthermore, each team’s record and points accumulated from their games against the advancing teams from their group will be carried forward into this stage. Teams will then be tasked with playing against three different opponents. Once this has been completed, the top-3 teams from each of the two groups will be promoted into Pro, meanwhile the teams that finished 4^th in both groups will battle against each other in a BO5 for the final Pro spot.

Once the BO5 has been played out, and the victor promoted, the pro / lite qualifiers will have concluded.

ECL Pro 11 -> 12 Transition

We do agree that the "sudden" immediate relegation for teams in 15th and 16th spot is too harsh at this stage in the season, so we put together a compromise for the transition between ECL 11 and 12 that allows for every team to have a chance to prove their worth.

Seven (7) out of these twenty (20) teams participating in the ECL Pro Qualification tournament will play in ECL Pro 12.

Like the promotion structure laid out for Pro / Lite, Lite / Core will be largely the same – albeit with some minor differences.

Instead of the qualifiers consisting of 20 teams there will be 24 teams, all competing to gain entry into Lite.

Now for the quick rundown of who this qualifier will not have an impact on. Lite teams that finished the season prior as the 15th or 16th ranked team in their group will be directly relegated to the Core division. Meanwhile, the top-3 teams from the Core playoffs (i.e. champion, runners-up, bronze game victor) will be instantly promoted into Lite.

With the automatic relegations / promotions out of the way let’s get into the specifics of who you will see in the Lite / Core qualifier.

As with the Pro / Lite system, the majority of the teams taking part will be sourced from the season prior’s Core playoff teams (4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th), as well as Lite teams who were ranked 13th, or 14th in their group (of which there are four). Specifically, this means that these two groups of teams will take up 16 spots of this 24-team qualifier.

The next group of teams invited will be the four best Neo playoff teams (i.e. champion, runners-up, and semifinalists). Finally, the remaining four slots will be ‘wildcard’ teams. The process will be similar to the one already laid out for Pro / Lite, namely that these spots can either be filled by solely special* teams, remaining Core playoff teams, or a combination of the two – with that said however, the special* teams take priority and if there are four eligible for admission into the qualifier, then the Core playoff teams that finished 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th will not be selected

In order to qualify as a ‘special’ team you must hit one of these two quotas:

• Five former Lite starters

A starter is defined as having played 16 or more games in the ECL 12 season, or 20 or more games in the ECL 11 season.

Additionally, to prevent teams from taking advantage of the staggered divisional start time that we have instituted for ECL, specifically recruiting players to bolster your chances in the qualifier that have no intention of remaining in the team beyond that, we have decided to enforce a soft roster lock post qualifier play. What this means in practice is that if a former Elite player wants to participate in a qualifier for a Pro or Lite team, then they will be locked into that division for four weeks (starting from the first game played in Elite that season). If a former Pro player wishes to do the same, then they will be locked into the division for 2 weeks (starting from the first game played in Pro that season).

Finally, if there happens to be more open spots than anticipated (e.g. from teams disbanding which would have been invited to play in the qualifier, or owned a spot to the division in question), we will award the next highest ranked playoff team each spot, whilst the next highest ranked potential qualifier eligible team will replace them in the qualifier. This procedure will be carried out for each and every extra unforeseen spot.

Now onto the method in which the Lite / Core qualifiers will be conducted.

The twenty-four teams will be split into four groups of six based on the following seeding:

Furthermore, each team’s record and points accumulated from their games against the advancing team from their group will be carried forward into this stage. Teams will then be tasked with playing against two different opponents. Once this has been completed, the top-2 teams from each of the two groups will be promoted into Lite, meanwhile the teams that finished 3rd in both groups will battle against each other in a BO5 for the final Lite spot.

EDIT March 17th: 

During the preparation of the new ECL 12 season, we noticed that the transition qualifier that we previously introduced for the ECL 12 Lite season had a small error. We failed to take the Wildcard teams into consideration in our math for the qualifiers which would have lead to an 68 team Lite division.

We will still use the previously announced system we mentioned in our structure article, but we will be making a small adjustment: The playoff line will be moved from above the 7th seed to above the 6th seed. This means that the top 5 teams out of each qualifying group has a chance to continue to play for the ECL Lite promotion, while the 6th-8th ranked teams in each group will solidify their spot in the Core division.

We apologize for the miscalculation while creating the new system, but we still believe that having a chance to fight for the ECL Lite promotion as a 5th ranked team in your individual group still gives you a very fair chance to make it.

Despite his young age, 21-year-old Oskari @SibeIius Grönroos has played a very long career in virtual hockey. The young man has represented several top clubs, including FILADELPHIA, JYP and Butterfly Effect during these playing years. In early 2020, we conducted an interview with him in our "Player Spotlight"-series that you can read here: Player Spotlight: Oskari "Sibelius" Grönroos.

He started his NHL playing career with 1v1 - a game mode he adopted back in NHL 15. It wasn't until a couple of years later that the young man switched over to the 6v6 side of things. SibeIius says that he has also participated in several versus tournaments, but the mode itself is not as pleasant and interesting as 6v6 action.

Since moving to the 6v6 game format, SibeIius has made a rather quick ascent to the group of top players in the Finnish virtual hockey scene and holds a high standard internationally too.

"I started playing NHL 15 games casually in the 1v1 format, and 6v6 I didn't start until NHL 17. That's also when I started transitioning towards competitive play more and ultimately it's led me to the point I'm at today."

Transfer to HAVU

For this season SibeIius moved to represent HAVU Gaming, which is definitely one of the top teams in virtual hockey. In the previous ECL 10 season, SibeIius represented JYP Jyvaskyla, a team that dominated the top of the regular season and was en route towards a successful run. However, in the playoffs, the team did not play as hoped and fell out of the quarterfinals against Swedish Farjestad BK in one of the biggest upsets in a long time.

"I was very excited about the opportunity to represent HAVU. The group is full of good guys who I've known also off the ice for a long time. I would argue that HAVU's playing as a unit and consistency during the season will be the biggest differences when compared to JYP."

Studies alongside gaming

Although SibeIius represents one of Finland's top clubs, there is also time to study. He also says that leisure time is a good counterbalance to gaming and tough university studies.

"I study at the Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki, so when not training or playing otherwise, I'm catching up on some reading or doing other assignments for school. But if there's free time, I usually go out and have dinner with friends or talk to them in party chat and maybe play some 1v1 at the same time or watch some TV show or stream on the computer."

When asked about his best memory in virtual hockey, the young man mentions winning the IS Cup 3 (NHL19 6vs6) Finnish Championship representing FILADELPHIA at a GameXpo event in the autumn of 2018. FILADELPHIA defeated Written In The Stars 2-1 in a BO3 final of the tournament. The IS Cup 3 event at GameXpo was a huge stepping stone for the development of the 6's community and the final series is still remembered as one of the most intense clashes of the sport.

He says that the biggest reason why they won the tournament with FILADELPHIA was the team's seamless team spirit.

"Team spirit was our key to success. I don't think any of the teams had a similar spirit compared to us and of course, we had a team considered one of the best in Europe as FILA still is, but I bet that the decisive factor was how relaxed and happy we were to just play."

Strengths & weaknesses - European top 6

Each player has their own strengths and weaknesses, it's good to be aware of them and be able to develop them to be even better at any point. The young man feels that his clear strengths are on the mental side.

"As a player, I feel like I have a relatively good pressure tolerance that's probably developed since I've played a lot of tough and tight games in the playoffs, off the field I feel like the kind of relaxed guy who likes to joke around and I think I get along pretty well with people."

When asked about an ability of his choice that he could steal from one of his teammates, SibeIius starts pondering about a career on offense - hands like Tuukka @FlyerKungen Kuha or Ilmari @Buantso Lehkonen would be beneficial on that front.

Anyone who plays even a little virtual hockey sometimes wonders what his or her dream unit would be like. We asked SibeIius to form a dream roster of his own, and there were some very familiar men among his selections.

"There has been a lot of thought and reflection on these through different perspectives. My selection would be based on achieving the best possible performances on the ice through skill, but also chemistry. Outside of HAVU players I'd pick LW Paul @PleeMaker Arontie C Perttu @Beniittto Kemppainen RW Erik @Eki Tammenpää LD Aaro @xDoumi Ruuhinen RD Aleksi @loimmu Loimuvirta G Filip @Faze91- Azri."

Future outlook

Having played virtual hockey for such a long time, SibeIius states that he's also interested in other games, such as CS:GO. However, he notes that it would not necessarily be played at the competitive level. His long career in in NHL has also spurred some opinions on how the Finnish NHL scene should be developed in the future.

"It's hard to say. Of course, more tournaments and more prize money would always be nice to get, but I'd say that @Kenu and the staff and partners are doing everything in their power to make this grow all the time. It would be cool if the NHL itself ever got involved, but I have no idea how excited the big gentlemen are across the pond. I think things are rolling quite well at the moment, given the circumstances."

As he stated, besides playing a lot of his free time is taking up by his studies and he hopes that in the next five years he would be able to find work in the profession. However, he does not completely rule out some kind of career path along virtual hockey at some point.

"Of course I'll be part of the scene for years to come but unless some big steps are taken in the next five years, I feel like my career might take me in another direction. Of course you never know, maybe I could handle some of the juridical duties at NHLGamer if things take a turn that way. I definitely hope that the friendships will last beyond our playing careers but overall the future isn't something I've offered much thought to due to my young age."

The views presented in this article are purely speculative and based on the writers own opinions. Some others would highlight different fixtures in this round but I have decided on these because most of these games have minor or barely any favorites and some has teams with tremendously long winning streaks going, which of course adds a bit of spice to the action. However, for the sake of the preview some matchups have a highlighted favorite in the prediction, but a game seven finish is by no means out of the question in most of these matchups.

ECDC Memmingen eSports won their Group 1 quite convincingly with the record 26-3-1. Clowns on Ice narrowly reached the playoffs but they are not a team to be underestimated. Tight games can be expected although Memmingen is a slight favorite - they only beat Clowns on Ice narrowly in their regular season matches by 1-0 OT and 4-2. Clowns on Ice is a strong challenger but ECDC Memmingen Esports power on attack will be the factor that tips the scales in their favor, as it's doubtful if the Clowns have anything to match that in their arsenal.

(4)  Spirit vs Taavetin Starat  (61)

In this series Taavetin Starat has nearly as good of a record in their last 10 games as Spirit: 7-3-0 vs 7-2-1. Spirit won their group and Taavetin Starat took the last playoff-place, which without a doubt puts Spirit in the drivers seat in this series, but it is right there for the taking for Starat. The standrad level of Spirit is above that of their competition, but there is tremendous amounts of undiscovered potential with Starat and they can sway the series their way, although it might look unlikely at the moment.

Dynastia was very impressive in the regular season with a 25-4-1 record while Syndrome barely reached the playoffs but are still good team showed by them challenging top teams in their group in the regular season rather consistently, such as a 4-3 OT win and a slight 3-1 loss against Spirit, who performed well and is quite comparable to Dynastia as a team. @sam in the Syndrome net is one of the key factors for in challenging Dynastia´s top attacking players and will determine their chances of actually advancing in this series. A shootout will definitely turn in the favor of Dynastia but if the score is kept low, this series can be a coin toss.

(6)  Ringette HC vs Sticklifters  (59)

Ringette HC are on an impressive 12 win streak and there seems to be no stopping them, but it remains to be seen if Sticklifters could be up to the task - maybe Santa has brought the guys new controllers to boost that x-button spam in time for playoffs? with the high confidence and offense clicking, Ringette will be a tough team to beat and they could be going far this season. Their unbeaten streak can be broken in this series, but Sticklifters will not be able to take four wins.

(7)  MUKIMIEHET vs Tic Tac Toes  (58)

Last seasons´s phenomenon Tic Tac Toes barely managed to reach the playoffs, which might serve as a wake up call for the team - or not. They had a bad run of form at the end of the regular season. MUKIMIEHET as a reborn superteam has redeemed their huge expectations with a convincing 23-5-0 record and winning their group. They had a consistent form throughout the regular season and are a strong favorite in this series if they play true to their level. If Tic Tac Toes can redeem more of their potential and get back in their winning ways and possibly the form of the early season, there is a small change for an upset.

(9)  Armada Hockey vs Nordic Nosebleed  (56)

Armada Hockey, alike many other top teams are running into the playoffs on a winning streak, 10 games and counting, but Nordic Nosebleed if anyone are the ones to stop Armada. The two teams met in the regular season in two really tight battles on the scoreboard, but Armada being in control of the game flow almost entirely. It is expected that the series will follow that same script and if the scoring can be kept minimal Nosebleed stands a chance, but if we end up seeing a scoring race, Armada marches on.

(13)  GIFU Hockey vs Golden Nights  (52)

We'll be in for a treat between GIFU Hockey and Golden Nights as both teams are in a winning streak to end their regular season. GIFU has a longer streak, but it's all about peaking at the right times in the playoffs and that seems to be what Golden Nights are in for going into the postseason. Despite being an underdog, Golden Nights have challenged several good teams in the regular season and in fact won tough opponents like Ringette HC and Tic Tac Toes. Seven games is what I expect from this matchup.

(18)  Sjukstugan vs The Last Line  (47)

Both were in great form recently to cap off the regular season. Sjukstugan finished third in their group and The Last Line came in 7th place. I would like to state that the series will be a fierce back and forth battle, but Sjukstugan can hold a bit of a higher standard level. Ultimately the more disciplined team will advance and Sjukstugan´s higher standard will help them through IF they are able to reach it. The Last Line is expected to put up a decent fight and will be able to clinch a few wins, but I can't see them taking down Sjukstugan.

(19)  Old Farts vs Murohoki  (46)

Murohoki was expected to be one of the teams that could break the bank this season, but their campaign took a left turn and hasn't gone without struggles. However, it is still possible and the same applies to Old Farts. Both teams know that they have a great opportunity and possesses the skill to advance far into the postseason. At the same time, one team will disappoint here as another gets eliminated. This is probably one of the tightest series in advance in this round and a game 7 finish isn't out of the question. Old Farts with a bit more firepower and an edge in goalies is a slight favorite to me in this series.

Grenoble BDL Esports is one of the teams that have an outstanding 10 win streak going on. TuTo Esports have giant obstacle to climb with that but is definitely a team that has the skill and will to overcome. TuTo Esports finished 7th in their group and had good games in the regular season against groups top teams like GIFU Hockey and Sjukstugan winning both of them. TuTo Esports also has a good 7-3-0 record in their last 10. Grenoble BDL Esports is a favorite but TuTo Esports most likely will offer a great series with a good battle for the four wins needed. Having an ace like @topikeranen, who is arguably one of the most skilled players in the division could be a gamechanger for TuTo but he cannot win the series alone.

(28)  Beast Hockey vs RoKI Esports  (37)

The “pride of Lapland” RoKi Esports finished 7th in their group and played well in games against top teams like Sjukstugan and GIFU Hockey. Beast Hockey finished 4th in their group and also challenged top teams MUKIMIEHET and Calzone HC extremely well. They have also collected 4 wins out of 5 games in their latest matches. This first round matchup is wide open and can very well come down to which team has a better night whenever games are to be played. Despite being a rarity in the Lite playoffs at this stage, a game 7 isn't out of the question and I recommend to keep an eye on this battle specifically. RoKi Esports has had a great ECL debut and has all the tools to cause a minor upset from the slight underdog position.

(30)  Rogle BK vs ASM Hockey  (35)

Both finished 5th in their group and played well against top teams in their groups so ultimately this comes down to a clash between two capable teams out of which one has to be eliminated. In this series - like in a few others too - there is a realistic possibility for a game 7. Rogle BK is the minor favorite in this clash but ASM Hockey has proven themselves against top teams and they are ready for success. With wider firepower in attack I believe Rogle BK will go advance although one could state that ASM Hockey has edge in goalies which is important if they were to turn the series in their favor.

Christmas is just around the corner and we have great news from the Finnish Lapland as the ice hockey club Rovaniemen Kiekko (RoKi), from the official hometown of Santa Claus -  Rovaniemi, joins the world of NHL esports. 

The roster of Basic Instinct has represented RoKi Esports in ECL 11 Lite group 7 where the team has secured a spot in the playoffs. Compared to Basic Instinct’s last season in ECL 10 Lite it’s clear that the team is already taking big steps forward and cooperation with RoKi will motivate the team to do even better. 

RoKi Hockey Oy CEO Pekka Kankaanranta chimed in on their new project as follows:

"We have been following the rise of esports and other hockey teams joining the scene. Some discussions around our aspirations with esports and what would be the correct route to take were had, but the questions were ultimately answered when Teemu  @Tecena Kuusela contacted us and told us about the possibility of changing their already existing team to RoKi’s team. We found common ground in how to run the project and with open minds and great excitement we decided to hop on. I believe that esports will serve us as a new channel and bring many new opportunities. In addition to pro gaming our vision for the future is to offer kids and youngsters new hobby activities in esports and we’ll be taking careful steps towards making this become a reality."

NHLGamer decided to contact team captain @Tecena for some insight about dealing with RoKi and his feelings about the news:

First of all congratulations on partnering with RoKi. How does it feel to be a part of RoKi Esports? How did the whole thing start and is there some special connection between the members of the team and the RoKi organization? 

"Thank you very much. Playing for RoKi Esports has been an amazing experience for us right from the beginning. Representing such a great club also brings up more pressure and a competitive mindset to our playing and it suits us very well. 

The whole idea started when I contacted my old teammate that I used to play with in the amateurs league and he happens to be a sales manager for RoKi Hockey Oy. He took our idea to Pekka Kankaanranta, CEO of RoKi Hockey Oy and soon we were meeting both in person. We talked about the possibilities of esports and It didn’t take long to find a mutual agreement for cooperation.

Most of our players are from southern Finland but the city of Rovaniemi is also well represented in our roster. Three of our current players are from Rovaniemi - Me, Osku @Poksus Kylmäluoma and Roope @Ihan pihalla Taavettila, while Me and poksus still live here up North."

What is your target as a team in ECL 11 and in the future? Has RoKi given any objectives for you to fulfill?  

"Our main target in ECL has been reaching the playoffs. Last time in ECL 10 Lite we were left out of the playoffs but this time we are more experienced and stronger. This time we finished the regular season in a playoff spot so I’m really happy with our results so far. Our playing style is very suitable for playoff hockey so the expectations are high and I believe that everything is possible there. 

In the next ECL tournament we will be able to start the season as RoKi Esports and I believe that if necessary, we could recruit some reinforcements when we start to prepare for the new season. I also believe that playing for organizations such as RoKi, it’s going to be easier to find players that could be interested to play for our club. If every piece in the puzzle fits, our goal in the future will be promotion to the ECL Pro division.   

RoKi hasn’t set any competitive targets for us but I have to admit we had a spark of joy in our meeting with the club when it was noticed that we were currently topping TuTo Esports in the league. Both clubs are playing in Mestis which is the second-highest men's ice hockey league in Finland. RoKi’s wish for us is to create good content for our social media channels. Currently we have been adding stuff to our Facebook and Instagram pages where you can find for example the highlights from our ECL league games."
 

How would you describe the current roster of the team? Do you see it as a long term project or is there any room for example RoKi fans to contact you and join for a tryout in the future?

"Our current roster is in a really good state at the moment. At times it’s really hard to pick the starting six for the games since there are so many players that can play in multiple positions without making our playing system any weaker. So the starters are picked based on my own feelings and the current form of the player.   

Me, Tommy @Lefa27 Nyman and Jussi @tipsd Tiipiö have been playing together since ECL 9. In ECL 10 Roope (Drippimehu93) and Osku (poksus) joined the team so we know each other pretty well by now. Osku didn’t play any matches in ECL 10 but in ECL 11 he has been impressive in net. He started playing as a goaltender this summer and a tough training camp with Basic Instinct is now showing great results. Pauli @egetelli_ Savenius and Lari @keijo herra Herranen are our latest additions whereas Niko @Lukedos Torniainen has served well in the backup role outside of competitive games.

Our target with RoKi for the future is to start a junior team. It would also be awesome to start a reserve team where players from the RoKi organization could play. Maybe we could get even more new players to the NHL scene in the future."
 

Rovaniemen Kiekko

Rovaniemen Kiekko was founded in 1979 and it is the biggest hockey club in Finnish Lapland. RoKi’s first team is currently playing in Mestis which is the second-highest men's ice hockey league in Finland and RoKi Women’s first team plays in Naisten Liiga (Women’s League) which is the elite league for women's ice hockey in Finland. Some of the key values for Rovaniemen Kiekko is their youth teams and player production. RoKi wants to help every player to reach their full potential and ensure that everyone can enjoy hockey at a reasonable price. One of the latest gems of RoKi’s junior production is NHL drafted, U20 WJC gold medalist, defender Vili Saarijärvi who currently plays in Liiga (Finnish Elite League) for league leaders Rauman Lukko.

The third week of ECL 11 Elite action is in the bank and with that it's slowly but surely time to start transitioning into the holiday spirit, but first we'll take a quick glance into some notable events of the past week as usual. At this moment we're just shy of the midway point of the season and as action will continue after the holiday break o point will go uncontested. Interestingly enough, now also the unbeaten streak of HAVU Gaming has been broken, as the current league leaders actually dropped two games in overtime this past week - against SAWO ESPORTS and fellow black and green repping Roots Gaming. Was the well oiled machine of HAVU already in vacation mode? They sure are hoping to bounce back nicely with some time away from the game. 

Despite having a perhaps more difficult week in terms of performance of the team, HAVU Gaming wingers Tuukka @FlyerKungen Kuha and Hannes @Hansulinho Kettunen have still paved their way to the top of the scoring table with 36 points each. Close behind we find FILADELPHIA duo Erik @Eki Tammenpää and Paul @PleeMaker Arontie. When it comes to goal scorers, we know that Emil @Hanssonni Hansson can hang with the best of them and currently does with 17 notches to his name, but it is something of a surprise considering that he is only two goals shy of his last total for ECL 10, although achieved in a mightily struggling Gotham Knights squad at that time. 

One of the most exciting performances of the week was broadcasted on Monday, as Roots Gaming goaltender and ECL Elite rookie Kasper @Kaz_zu Ramstedt was set to play in his third matchup of the season and secured a double shutout in the games against YMCA Esports. The young goaltender had a difficult start to the season but impressed on the big stage and should be able to coast on that momentum moving forward. 

The weakest performers of the week were undoubtedly Dark Horse, who managed to snag two points out of their six contests during the week. Although being matched up against some stacked teams over the past week, one could state that there are some scoring issues that need solving moving forward for the squad as they only found the back of the opposing teams net 1,33 times per game on average over the last six games. 

Transfers
It's a somewhat rare occasion to see some movement at the Elite level after the start of the season, but some transfers have come to knowledge in the past week or so, we'll also be recapping possible movement in these reports.

YMCA Esports 

IN Rami @ramseyy2 Rissanen, FA

YMCA Esports is joined by an old acquaintance from the free agent market. @ramseyy2 does it best in net and has last taken the ice in a few games with BRAYCE Phantoms back in GCL 6. In ECL 10 Elite, he saw action in 12 games, recording a SV% of 77.30 and a GAA of 2.67. He is a solid goalie but no difference maker on the ice, but as a party presence he might be invaluable.

The transfer deadline for ECL 11 Elite is on Thursday, December 31st at 23:59 CET.

Making a return this season will be the Elite: Power Rankings, provided by @MartindalexC. As always, the rankings are generated by weighting a team's results with the level of opposition that was faced, i.e. a team that went 4-0-0 against teams at the very bottom of Elite may very well be ranked below a team that went 0-4-0 against Elite's very finest. Without further ado though, let's have a look at how teams fared over the second week of ECL Elite:

Just under a month, and 18 games later, and we are ready to preview the ECL 11 Neo Playoffs. Those of you who have read the mid-season reports are aware that we had a lot of tight battles at the top of the groups, and some of them really did come down to the wire, with tie breakers necessary in several groups. With this being said, this playoff review will cover the 10 playoff games involving the group winners.

A note regarding League Administration actions taken in order to finish the ECL 11 Neo season:
We have removed teams that were unable to finish the season with more than 4 WO's. We understand that both removing the teams and keeping the teams with WO's have their caveats. The system isn't perfect and we will be looking at ways to improve it and - most importantly - make it a more clear and transparent process for the coming seasons.

For those unfamiliar with the format of the playoffs, 64 teams will enter; The top 6 from each group, alongside the 4 highest placed teams that did not make the cut. In the first round, the best of 5 series must take place between 14.12 – 20.12, with the winners progressing to the round of 32 after Christmas.

Now that the technicalities are out the way, let’s delve into the top playoff games:

 Rahinakaukalo vs Taskubilis 

One of the few predictions that turned out to be correct in the mid-season report was that Rahinakaukalo would go unbeaten. The number 1 seeds enter the playoffs with 18 wins from 18, and with the best defence having conceded the lowest number of goals in Neo. Despite their imperious record, they don’t have a single representative in Neo’s top 20 point scorers, which suggests that their team first attitude is not limited solely to their cohesion on defence.

Taskubilis are the number 64 seeds this year. Despite missing out through the top 6, Taskubilis have the highest number of goals scored out of the 4 additional teams and won 3 of their last 4 games to secure the final playoff spot. It is a very difficult ask for Taskubilis, and it will prove difficult for them to spend a lot of time in the opposition offensive zone against a team that like to keep the puck, anything good they can do will come from their Talisman forward @Jalitmane10.

Up against the lowest rank seed, expect Rahinakaukalo to continue their impressive form.

 Uknighted HC vs Kiekkonorpat 

From the best defence in Neo, to the best offence in Neo. Another team that held out from the mid-season report, Uknighted HC top their group, averaging 6.72 goals per game on their way to the top. Four blowout games where the knights put up more than 12 goals on the opposition shows they don’t take their foot off the gas even when the game is won. The Knights also sport the number 7 best skater by points in @Flo_Lomp and the number 3 defensemen in @Nr-0847, who holds the highest assists in Neo for defencemen.

Kiekkonorpat left it very late to mount their playoff push, 4 wins in their last 6 games, and a point in their penultimate game by taking Norrland to OT proved to be enough to take them to the promised land. It’s a tough draw for the 63 seeds, they haven’t been blown out since early in the season, and while they do score goals, their trouble has still been keeping the goals out. With the best offence and the best playmaking D-man in the league, it’s difficult to bet against the Knights firing their way into the next round.

 Rostedtin Jetit vs HC Poteropojat 

In a tightly contested Group 1 win. Rostedtin Jetit had to watch as closest rivals Reign attempted to overhaul a 30-goal differential against bottom of the table Polish Patriots to win the group. Reign fell short however, and the Jets held out. The Jets are led by experience captain @rGinnu who is no stranger to the ECL scene. Previous appearances in Elite and eSHL have served him well as he holds a comfortable lead at the top of the Neo stats table (63+35=98).

It might be top opposition that they are facing but HC Poteropojat had a nasty habit of taking their group games to OT. They don’t score many goals, but for a team that qualified from outside the top 6, they don’t concede too many either. They have a very reliable goalie in @Mikse94 and Poteropojat lost every game where he was absent in net. With that said, it is difficult to see where how they are going to trouble Rostedtin Jetit offensively. Expect one way traffic toward Poteropojat’s goal.
 

 Deggendorfer SC Esports vs Remparts Tours eSports 2 

Talking of good goalies, Deggendorfer will have Neo’s number 1 ranked goalie on the ice for their game against Remparts in @Zefix. To continue with this stat led preview, they also will be icing the number 4 Skater in @blechi12 and two defensemen from the top 10 in @Johannes.Helmbrecht and @Jules. The German side go into this game as hot favourites, having lost just 1 game in their last ten. With the 1 loss being a dead rubber encounter in their final group game.

For Remparts, it will be a big ask. After some close encounters early in the season, the French side made it their mission to either win by a big margin or lose by a big margin. They are a physical side and are one of Neo’s top teams in hits. Getting physical and hoping to disrupt Deggendorfer’s offence might be their best bet if they want to get out of the first round.
 

 Vemppaosasto vs HC Northmen 

Despite losing 3 of their first 4 games of the season. Vemppaosasto went on an excellent 12 game winning streak to win Group 9. In a battle between the Finnish sides silky brand of hockey vs Dynamo Dragons more direct approach of throwing the puck on net at every opportunity, Vemppaosasto took the group by a single point.

HC Northmen are the lowest of the Top 6 Group qualifiers with the 60th seed. The key to their success has been Powerplay goals, with a 46% conversion rate, impressive for a team lower down in the group table. Unfortunately for them, Vemppaosasto boast one of Neo’s best PK units. With a 94% success rate during box play, and they don’t give up many penalties either. Vemppaosasto are on the lower end of the goals scored table for Group winners, so there is always some hope for the underdogs, but not too much.
 

 Pinaattikone vs Million Plus 

Pinaattikone won Group 2 by winning their final two group games in OT, so the winning mindset is certainly there to match their ability. In a group with many other contenders for the top, Pinaattikone ground out win after win in the race for a top seeding spot in the playoffs. Furthermore, having iced just 6 players all season, they have one of the most cohesive units in Neo.

Million Plus go into the playoffs in terrible form. They have lost their last 4 games, 2 of which were against the bottom team in the Group. They do tend to save their better performances for games against better teams and picked up wins early in the season against some of their groups top sides. They need to shore up on defence in this tie after averaging 4 goals conceded a game in the last 6 matches. They go up against a Pinaattikone side who will relish the chance to show their scoring prowess.
 

 Finnish Finishers vs Enkopings SK HK eSPORT 

The Finishers have the Top Scoring Defensemen in Neo in @MoisionMessier and he will look to continue his scoring record into the playoffs against Enkopings. The Finishers took the Group despite losing in their final fixture after challengers EHC TATNEFT AK BARS collapsed in their final game against X6tence Hockey. Another strength of the Finnish Finishers is in Net, a strong Group stage showing was rounded up by a standout performance by @ollihmollih in the penultimate game of the group. A game which ultimately gave the Finishers the group win.

Enkopings enter the playoffs after an inconsistent performance in Group 9, unable to string more than 3 wins in a row all season, a 2nd period rally took them to OT against the aforementioned Vemppaosasto, and that was enough to take them to playoffs at the expense of EASHL Russia. Defensive struggles have been the problem for Enkopings, they have chopped and changed goalies in an effort to fix their GA, but to little avail. Not great news when you play the league’s top scoring Dman…
 

 SCB eSports vs EHC Traktor Chelyabinsk 

SCB eSports appeared to take it personally when I suggested in the mid-season report that they were happy to be a mid-table playoff side and responded by firing themselves into a three-way tie breaker at the top of Group 4 with Hannover and Ultimatum. The Swiss side were big scorers in their group and will take the same high-octane offence into this playoff encounter.

Chelyabinsk enters the playoffs from Group 6 in one of the closest playoff races, with their 2 wins over HC Poteropojat, and a surprise win over Latvian Warriors in the run in, being enough to guarantee them Playoff hockey. For a playoff side, they took a lot of penalties, with more than a third of their total PIM’s coming from a single player. With an average PK unit, and with a dangerous opposition in SCB, the Russians need to keep everyone on the ice to have any chance of victory in this one.
 

 Latvian Warriors vs 3TUNA le Sport 

A very interesting playoff fixture here, Latvian Warriors enter the playoffs as the least in form Group leader. Two losses in their final two group games didn’t give them the best of endings to the regular season. Also, going to OT was the theme of their season and they won just 3 of their 6 OT games. With this said, they are still group winners and have some excellent defence to thank for this. They have conceded just 28 goals all season and the Warriors played in 13 games separated by just one goal. They have a top 10 goalie and the ability to wear teams down by taking them all the way.

3Tuna also enter the playoffs in poor form. A good start to the season was soon forgotten as they crashed to two defeats, one in OT, against playoff hunting rivals Kiekkonorpat, they followed this up with two losses against the number 1 seed Rihinakaukalo which almost saw them slide out the playoffs. Strangely however, they still enter the playoffs having scored more goals than the Latvian Warriors, I don’t understand it either but there we have it. This will be a really interesting one, one of the league’s best defence vs a leaky defence, the leagues poorest group winning offence vs a mid-table offence.

Keep an eye on this matchup for sure.
 

 Goosebumps vs Ettan IK 

Goosebumps won Group 3 in a four-way tie breaker, after one of the closest fought groups in Neo history. They boast a top 5 offence in neo after putting up 103 goals in the regular season and despite this only had one skater in the top 20 points scorers, @Nagneigel. Goosebumps have points coming from all over the ice with three other skaters also putting up over 40 points for the regular season. They don’t seem too bothered about defending, and why would you when you spend so much time in the oppositions zone.

Ettan are not a bad side either though. They took 20 points in group 10, a tally that would have seen them much higher placed in a few other Neo groups. They gave group winners Deggendorfer a scare early in the season and seem to have only gotten better since their early season defeats. They lost only narrowly to the other challengers in Group 10 so do not rule Ettan out of this one. If they can frustrate Goosebumps on offense then this tie is up for grabs, with that said, I am not sure if you can bet against a team that managed to win Group 3.
